Greenland
(21 October 2024 1:37 AM) Making the Arctic territory more accessible
than ever before, a new international airport will open in Greenland’s capital Nuuk from the end of November, allowing larger aircraft to land for the first time - paving the way for direct flights from the US and Europe. From 28 November, direct flights to Nuuk will operate from Copenhagen, Denmark, carrying more than 300 passengers. And next summer, United Airlines will begin flying from New York, as Nuuk becomes Greenland’s main travel hub. In 2026, a second international airport will open in the town of Ilulissat, 350 miles north of Nuuk. A new regional airport, in Qaqartoq, the biggest town in the south of Greenland, will then follow. The three airports are together costing more than $800m. More than 140,000 foreign visitors came to Greenland last year. A flight from Europe to Nuuk is a little more than four hours. From the US East Coast is also four hours. A new tourism law will be introduced this autumn. (Source: BBC - United Kingdom)

(Monday), 2024.10.21.  Russian President Putin reportedly submitted a bill to the lower house of parliament on Monday to ratify a treaty to raise its relationship with North Korea to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was agreed by Putin and North Korean leader Kim on June 19 in Pyongyang after summit talks during the Russian president’s state visit. The new partnership includes a mutual defense assistance clause that would apply in the case of “aggression” against one of the signatories. South Korea said the North had dispatched 1,500 special forces troops to eastern Russia for training. South Korea’s National Intelligence Service says North Korean personnel were gathered within Russia’s Ussuriysk military facility, pictured on Oct. 16, 2024. U.S. Defense Secretary Austin said Saturday he could not confirm reports that North Korea had sent troops to Russia ahead of a possible deployment. NATO chief Rutte said Friday the alliance could not confirm the South Korean intelligence agency’s report. (Source: Radio Free Asia - U.S.)

October 21, 2024 8:00 am  Control over the media ecosystem. In a 3-2 vote sending shockwaves throughout the Republican Party, the Federal Communications Commission in September allowed a nonprofit group funded by Soros to take control over radio giant Audacy after the company went bankrupt. Audacy is the second-largest radio broadcaster in the U.S. after iHeartMedia. It is based in Philadelphia and filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Texas in January to cut its debt by 80%, a product of slower advertising. Soros Fund Management, his New York-based hedge fund, acquired over $400 million in Audacy’s top-tier debt - which is borrowed money a company must repay first should it go out of business. What that means is Soros Fund Management emerged as the largest shareholder in Audacy overnight. The FCC, an independent agency that regulates interstate and international communications by television, radio, wire, cable, and satellite must oversee the Audacy transaction, and in September, it signed off on it. Soros’s ties to the Audacy transaction are raising concerns among Republicans. The deal places the Soros family, namely Alex, the 38-year-old son of George, at the top of a media empire that houses more than 200 radio stations. Alex sits on the board of the Fund for Policy Reform, the group now overseeing Audacy through a labyrinth of corporations. The four-person board of trustees also includes Soros spokesman Vachon, attorney Canfield at Soros Fund Management (the firm that bought Audacy’s debt), and Benardo, a top staffer for the Soros-backed Open Society Foundations philanthropy empire. Along with other left-wing billionaires, Soros, with his money, helps keep the lights on at groups plausibly accused of censoring conservative voices online. Audacy’s portfolio includes right-leaning programs, such as Miami’s Radio Libre, a Spanish-language AM radio station, and Missouri’s KFTK-FM, FCC documents show. The goal: to control as much of the airwaves as possible. According to Republicans, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) “fast-tracked” it by bypassing standard procedure. The purported 'fast-track' is under investigation by GOP members of Congress, including House Oversight Committee Chairman Comer (R-KY), Rep. Roy (R-TX), Sen. Cruz (R-TX), and other lawmakers. The FCC’s has a rule against transferring licenses to entities with over 25% foreign ownership. Audacy filed a petition with the FCC, noting that as it was calculated at the time, the company would emerge from bankruptcy with 25% or more in foreign ownership, according to FCC documents. The national security review should have been conducted before the FCC’s granting of the Audacy licenses. In a September letter on Audacy to FCC Chairwoman Rosenworcel, a Democrat, Comer and Rep. Langworthy (R-NY) said they were looking into the agency’s 'apparent attempt … to interfere in the 2024 election and politicize the work of the FCC.'Some Republicans argue the 'Soros shortcut' deal will fuel a 'censorship machine.' Funding efforts to suppress disfavored speech, Soros and the U.S. government have both backed the Global Disinformation Index, a British group pressuring advertisers to defund right-of-center news outlets. They did it before the election because they want to affect the election. One of the stations acquired is the old WCAU, which is now WPHT in Philadelphia - one of the original radio stations that got a license in all of the United States. Two years ago, the Soros-backed Latino Media Network purchased Spanish-language radio stations from TelevisaUnivision for tens of millions of dollars. In 2022, Soros Fund Management invested in Crooked Media, a company founded by ex-Obama aides that distributes the popular left-wing Pod Save America podcast. There are four places where you can have a voice in today’s marketplace: internet, radio, TV, and newspaper. left-wing philanthropy built or took over enormous infrastructure to control various cultural chokepoints - especially media, entertainment, higher education, and corporate America. Conservative donors largely do not invest in “culture-shaping” institutions - media chief among them. (Source: Washington Examiner - U.S.)

Poland is gearing up to start negotiations with Lockheed Martin for more than 100 HIMARS multiple-launch rocket systems, General Kuptel, head of Poland’s Armament Agency, confirmed. Under a pre-existing framework agreement, Poland has the option to purchase up to 486 HIMARS systems. HIMARS excels in targeting critical enemy assets such as radar systems, command centers, armored units, and other strategic points. HIMARS systems are compatible with a range of missiles, including the GPS-guided M31 GMLRS rockets, which have a reach of up to 80 kilometers, and the longer-range ATACMS missiles, capable of striking targets up to 300 kilometers away. Each HIMARS unit can carry either a pod of six GMLRS missiles or a single ATACMS missile. In April, Poland also signed a contract for 72 K239 Chunmoo missile systems from South Korea, with initial deliveries slated for 2026. Ammunition production for these missile systems will be established locally through collaboration between Polish defense firm WB and South Korea’s Hanwha Aerospace. Poland’s Armament Agency has been busy this year, securing around 100 contracts to date. (Source: bulgarianmilitary)

10/31/2024 05:00 AM EDT  The S&P 500’s performance in the run-up to Election Day has historically been a strong indicator of whether the incumbent party’s candidate will retain control of the White House - correctly forecasting all but four presidential races over the last 96 years. If the index is falling, the theory goes, investors are bracing for more uncertainty from a new administration. But a climb in the S&P 500 signals that the market is expecting the current president’s party to win. And the index’s recent rise is suggesting that Vice President Harris, who took over the Democratic ticket from President Biden this summer, could be bound for victory. The S&P 500 is not a perfect forecasting tool. The index’s movements in 2020 indicated that Trump was likely to win a second term over President Biden. And this year, there are plenty of doubters on Wall Street about the S&P 500’s predictive power - many are once again wagering that he will soon return to power. The S&P steadily climbed throughout the year, often from gains recorded by a handful of tech giants or news on the Federal Reserve’s fight against inflation - and not likely on election developments. Trump, for his part, has regularly claimed credit for the stock market’s gains, saying investors believe that his return to power would boost share prices even more. Wall Street executives, political gamblers and cryptocurrency traders are piling up their bets that former President Trump is returning to the White House. Election-betting markets are leaning toward Trump. And stocks that could get a boost from a Trump presidency are climbing, too. In a recent research report, Morgan Stanley noted that a basket of investment products tracking industries that may see a windfall from a Republican win had outperformed the Democratic basket by 10 percent over the year. The Republican basket tracks energy companies, banks and crypto firms, among others. Leavitt, national press secretary for the Trump campaign, said the former president “continues to dominate in poll after poll.”“Voters know that Harris has destroyed our country, but President Trump will fix it - and that is why he is well-positioned for victory on November 5.” Spokespeople for the Harris campaign did not respond to a request for comment. With voters’ views of the economy splintered heading into Election Day, the stock market and the S&P 500 may not be the most useful in deciphering who will ultimately be elected, Stanford’s Grimmer said. (Thursday, 31 10 2024)  The Trump Media & Technology Group, the owner of Truth Social, saw its share price decrease by 22.3 percent yesterday. That’s the company’s worst one-day loss since it went public in March, The stock closed at above $51 on Tuesday, with Trump’s stake in the company valued at $5.9bn. That figure had dropped to $4.6bn by the end of Wednesday, a drop of $1.3bn. It remains unclear what caused the share price to drop, The share price has become a barometer for how some traders think the election will turn out. A number of traders blamed the nosedive on technical issues and a decrease in momentum for the meme stock. The stock doesn’t require official corporate announcements to see spikes or downturns. From September 23 until the closing of the markets on Tuesday, the stock had quadrupled in value, pushed on by Wall Street bets that Trump will win Tuesday’s election. The increase saw Trump Media’s evaluation shoot up to $10.3bn before closing on Tuesday. Truth Social has 698,000 monthly active US users. Fundamentally the valuation is a head-scratcher but it has seen other meme stock narratives like GameStop on similar paths the last few years. (Source: independent ) United Kingdom

Oct 30, 2024 09:30 PM IST  Trump has launched fresh attacks on Harris and Biden, accusing the vice president of ’running a campaign of hate.’ and blasting the president for calling Trump supporters ’garbage.’ “While I am running a campaign of positive solutions to save America, Harris is running a campaign of hate. She has spent all week comparing her political opponents to the most evil mass murderers in history. Now, on top of everything, Biden calls our supporters ’garbage.’ You can’t lead America if you don’t love the American People,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added, “ Harris and Biden have shown they are both unfit to be President of the United States. I am proud to lead the biggest, broadest, and most important political coalition in American history. We are welcoming historic numbers of Latinos, African Americans, Asian Americans, and citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed. It is my desire to be the President of all the people”. What did Biden say? Responding to comic Hinchcliffe, who came under fire for calling Puerto Rico an ’island of garbage’ during a Trump rally during the weekend, Biden said: ’The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters.’ The White House later issued a 'clarification': It said Biden was actually talking about Hinchcliffe’s words. ’The only garbage I see floating out there is (Trump's) supporter’s… his demonisation of Latinos is unconscionable, and it's un-American, the transcript reads, according to BBC. October 30, 2024  "Trump vs. Harris: Ukraine’s future could depend on America’s 2024 election.'   Trump ’praised Putin’s actions as “savvy” and “genius.” He has mocked President Zelensky as “the world’s greatest salesman’ and blamed Ukraine for having ’let the war start. Trump „used his allies in Congress to hold up that aid for six months as Ukrainian forces ran out of ammunition. His running mate Vance ’has said “I don’t really care what happens to Ukraine.”   Harris ’understands the difference between right and wrong in this terrible war. 'She has praised Ukraine’s leaders and people for their courage. 'She ’has done everything in her power to help Ukraine. 'She fought for Congress to approve billions of dollars in military and economic aid to produce weapons in American factories that brave Ukrainians have used to destroy half of Russia’s land army’.   Trump „has repeatedly refused to say that he wants Ukraine to win. He „suggested that Ukraine should simply give in to Russia because he believes ('falsely') that Russia always wins its wars. He ”endorsed a plan to force Ukraine to surrender territory and give up NATO membership forever, promising he’ll try to end the war on what are essentially Putin’s terms' even before he’s sworn in.   Harris’ supports a just end to the war that vindicates the sacrifices Ukrainians have made. She ’rightly condemned proposals for Ukraine to give up its sovereign territory or its right to join NATO. Harris ’knows that other dictatorships, including China, would be emboldened to attack their neighbors if Russia prevails'.   Trump „has said - and these are his actual words - that he would “encourage” the Russians to do “whatever the hell they want” to our allies’.   ’From the day Putin started this war, we have urged the Biden administration to send even more aid faster to Ukraine, and pressed members of Congress of both parties to fund that aid’. ’The ballots Americans cast on November 5 will determine if Ukrainians have bullets to fire tomorrow’. Argentina
October 30, 2024  Together with Bolivia and Chile, Argentina forms part of the so-called “Lithium Triangle”, the area hosting 53% of the world’s identified lithium resources. Argentina is the fourth largest lithium producer globally, behind Australia, Chile and China, but its reserve potential is even greater. Stirred by rising global demand, lithium projects multiply in Argentina - it has some 40 projects in preliminary stages that could reach production in the short term. Livent's - a mining company now known as Arcadium Mining - Fénix project at the Salar del Hombre Muerto salt flat in northern Argentina is currently the country’s largest lithium mine. Last year, it generated 22,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate, almost half of the 50,000 tonnes produced in the country. The US-owned company merged in early 2024 with Australia’s Allkem to create Arcadium Lithium, which was itself bought out by British-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto this October. Rio Tinto is now set to rank as the world’s third largest lithium producer. The marks left here by mining may offer a warning for the future over the industry’s environmental impact. More than 25 years of lithium extraction is said to have contributed to the drying up of a nearby river. Darkened patches of dead vegetation are the first thing that can be seen upon a dry plain where just a few years ago the Trapiche River used to flow. In 2023, Argentina exported USD 835 million of lithium, representing 20.8% of the country’s mining exports. Over 40% of this lithium is sold to China, where it is used to produce the batteries that power electric cars, but also mobile phones and computers. Atacameños del Altiplano is one of the Indigenous community groups that have organised to protect other rivers in northern Argentina from risks linked to lithium mining. A few months ago they won a victory in that battle: the Supreme Court of Catamarca ruled that lithium mining had damaged the river and halted the industry’s expansion close to another stream in the province, Los Patos, until it can be verified that it will not suffer the same fate as the Trapiche. 'The estimated timeframe for recovery to pre-development conditions is 10 years after the cessation of mining,' Livent said in its sustainability report from 2022, when it oversaw the facility. In its 2022 sustainability report, Livent reported revenues of USD 813.2 million and a gross profit of USD 366.7 million. /photo/ (Source: dialogue.earth)

Globalization

October 10, 2024  ’The age of depopulation’.  UN Population Division (UNPD) has reported that by 2022, every population in China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan was shrinking. By 2023, fertility levels were 40 percent below replacement in Japan, over 50 percent below replacement in China, almost 60 percent below replacement in Taiwan, and  65 percent below replacement in South Korea.    The Southeast Asian region as a whole fell below the replacement level around 2018. South Asia dropped below replacement before the pandemic.    The UNPD has calculated overall fertility for the region of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2024 at 1.8 births per woman - 14 percent below the replacement rate.    In North Africa and the greater Middle East demographers have long assumed that the Islamic faith served as a bulwark against precipitous fertility declines. Despite of this, Iran has been a sub-replacement society for about a quarter century. Tunisia, Turkey has also dipped below replacement.    For half a century, Europe’s overall fertility rates have been continuously sub-replacement. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia has witnessed 17 million more deaths than births. The 27 countries of the current European Union are about 30 percent below replacement today. Together, they reported just under 3.7 million births in 2023 - down from 6.8 million in 1964. The EU has been a net-mortality zone since 2012, and in 2022 it registered four deaths for every three births. The UNPD has estimated that in 2020, the continent entered what will become a long-term population decline.    The sub-Saharan Africa, with its roughly 1.2 billion people and a UNPD-projected average fertility rate of 4.3 births per woman today, is the planet’s last consequential redoubt of the fertility patterns that characterized low-income countries during the population explosion of the middle half of the twentieth century. The UNPD has estimated that fertility levels in sub-Saharan Africa have fallen by over 35 percent since the late 1970s, when the subcontinent’s overall level was an astonishing 6.8 births per woman    The United States remains the main outlier among developed countries, with relatively high fertility levels for a rich country (although far below replacement - just over 1.6 births per woman in 2023) and steady inflows of immigrants.    In 1994, the economist  Pritchett discovered  that the most powerful national fertility predictor ever detected is what women want.    While the overall population growth slumps, the number of seniors (defined here as people aged 65 or older) will surge exponentially - everywhere. South Korea provides the most stunning vision of a depopulating society just a generation away. Current projections have suggested that South Korea will mark three deaths for every birth by 2050. In some UNPD projections, the median age in South Korea will approach 60. More than 40 percent of the country’s population will be senior citizens; more than one in six South Koreans will be over the age of 80. South Korea will have just a fifth as many babies in 2050 as it did in 1961. It will have barely 1.2 working-age people for every senior citizen.    The lack of desire for children is why the extinction of every family line could be only one generation away.     Tomorrow’s world will be much more African. Although about a seventh of the world’s population today lives in sub-Saharan Africa, the region accounts for nearly a third of all births; its share of the world’s workforce and population are thus set to grow immensely over the coming generation. Human capital - not just population totals - matters greatly to national power, and the outlook for human capital in sub-Saharan Africa remains disappointing. Standardized tests indicate that a stunning 94 percent of youth in the region lack even basic skills. As huge as the region’s 2050 pool of workers promises to be, the number of workers with basic skills may not be much larger there than it will be in Russia alone in 2050. India is now the world’s most populous country and on track to continue to grow for at least another few decades. Its demographics virtually assure that the country will be a leading power in 2050. But India’s rise is compromised by human resource vulnerabilities. India has a world-class cadre of scientists, technicians, and elite graduates. But ordinary Indians receive poor education. A shocking seven out of eight young people in India today lack even basic skills - a consequence of both low enrollment and the generally poor quality of the primary and secondary schools available to those lucky enough to get schooling. The skills profile for China’s youth is decades, maybe generations, ahead of India’s youth today. India is unlikely to surpass a depopulating China in per capita output or even in total GDP for a very long time. Russia’s shrinking numbers and its seemingly intractable difficulties with public health and knowledge production have been reducing the country’s relative economic power for decades, with no turnaround in sight. China’s birth crash - the next generation is on track to be only half as large as the preceding one - will unavoidably slash the workforce and turbocharge population aging, even as the Chinese extended family, heretofore the country’s main social safety net, atrophies and disintegrates. These impending realities presage unimagined new social welfare burdens for a no longer dazzling Chinese economy and may end up hamstringing the funding for Beijing’s international ambitions. As for the United States, the demographic fundamentals look fairly sound - at least when compared with the competition. Demographic trends are on course to augment American power over the coming decades, lending support for continued U.S. global preeminence. Given the domestic tensions and social strains that Americans are living through today, these long-term American advantages may come as a surprise. But they are already beginning to be taken into account by observers and actors abroad. Thanks in large measure to immigration, the United States is on track to account for a growing share of the rich world’s labor force, youth, and highly educated talent. Continuing inflows of skilled immigrants also give the country a great advantage. 'No other population on the planet is better placed to translate population potential into national power' - and it looks as if that demographic edge will be at least as great in 2050. Compared with other contenders, 'U.S. demographics look great today - and may look even better tomorrow - pending, it must be underscored, continued public support for immigration'. The United States remains the most important geopolitical exception to the coming depopulation. (Source: foreignaffairs)

Európai Parlament
Oct 9, 2024  10:24:22 - 10:42:17  Orbán Viktor, a Tanács soros elnöke: Tisztelt Elnök Asszony! Egyszerűen keresni akarnak a magyarokon. És most őt támogatják? Több tiszteletet Magyarországnak, több tiszteletet a magyaroknak!

European Parliament
(Wednesday ), October 9, 2024  Hungary's leader Viktor Orbán made his case for "change" in Europe today, in an address to the bloc's hostile parliament. "The European Union needs to change, and I would like to convince you about that today," said the ’hard-right’ prime minister, in Strasbourg to present the priorities of Hungary's norm-defying EU presidency. Orbán called it the "most serious period" in EU history, with the Ukraine war on its doorsteps, escalating conflict in the Middle East and a ’migration crisis’ he said could cause the Schengen open border system to fall apart. "Our union needs to change, and the presidency wants to be the catalyst for this change," he said. Orbán has pointed at 'hard-right' electoral gains from Italy to the Netherlands and Austria - and the rising influence of a Hungarian-led new group in the EU parliament, the Patriots for Europe - as evidence the political climate in Europe is slowly but surely shifting. Lawmakers listened respectfully to his address - with occasional applause from sympathetic members. Orbán's parliament debate, attended by Commission chief Der Leyen, is now taking place midway through Budapest's mandate. Since returning to lead his country in 2010, Orbán repeatedly was clashing with Brussels over rule-of-law issues. Orbán's government is at loggerheads with its partners on a host of issues - from stalling aid for Kyiv, to enacting a host of laws the bloc sees as democratic backsliding. Hungary assumed the EU's rotating six-month presidency in July. Then Orbán went off script: embarking on an Ukraine "peace mission" to Kyiv, Moscow Beijing ((and U.S.)). ’In response’, Der Leyen ’ordered top officials to skip a series of meetings organised by the Hungarian presidency’- an unprecedented de facto boycott. Georgia
19 October 2024 12:38 (UTC +04:00)  Georgian people strive for peace, development instead of war, revolution,  the country's analyst Chikhelidze told. "The election campaign in Georgia is taking place in a calm atmosphere. The country demonstrates a European, free electoral environment where every party has the opportunity to express its views freely and present its programs to voters. It is important to note that the police are completely depoliticized, and there is no pressure on political opponents," he emphasized. Chikhelidze also pointed out a number of issues that destabilize the electoral process in the country. He highlighted the ongoing attacks by the opposition on the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia, which, in his opinion, undermines trust in the electoral system. According to him, recently, the CEC employees received threats via text messages, raising concerns in society. The analyst expressed concern about the interference of external forces, particularly the West, in the electoral process in Georgia. "External interference in our parliamentary election has reached unprecedented level, directly violating our sovereignty. Over the past few years, Georgia's role as an independent and sovereign state has significantly grown. For the collective West, this poses a threat, as Georgia's growing independence and economic development do not align with their interests. The West cannot accept that Georgia can determine its own path according to the will of its people. There are attempts to play out a scenario similar to that of Ukraine, which led to revolution, war, and destruction, but I want to tell the West: the scenario of Ukraine won't repeat in Georgia!," Chikhelidze said. He also mentioned that in the future, the West will have to accept the election results and work with the government elected by the Georgian people. "The Caucasus region and Georgia are important to the West, but we expect an equal dialogue. We won't tolerate vassal relations from any country," the analyst added. To note, the parliamentary election in Georgia is scheduled for October 26. (Source: en.trend *)

Egypt
10/19/2024  Egyp’s geopolitical and financial situation has much improved since the onset of Israel's war against Hamas in Gaza. President el-Sissi secured himself a third term in December's presidential election. Egypt is perceived as an influential country again. US, Qatari and Egyptian diplomats have frequently met in Cairo to negotiate an elusive cease-fire in Gaza and a release of the remaining hostages. Egypt’s new prominence in the Middle East and North Africa had silenced external comment on human rights violations - other governments have been willing to forgive the country's dismal human rights, as well as criticism for its failure to implement democratic structures and political reforms. "Egypt has earned additional support from Washington by cooperating with the Israelis on permission surrounding goods moving into Gaza," said Kaldas, deputy director of the Washington-based Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy. He said US officials had prioritized Egypt's cooperation with Israel and the United States over the rights and freedoms of Egyptians. US Secretary of State Blinken has stopped criticizing Egypt for its dire rights record. Egypt was being generously rewarded for its efforts, Kaldas added. The White House has granted Egypt the full $1.3 billion (€1.2 billion) in military assistance this year. "Whereas in the past, they would at least withhold the portion that was conditioned on human rights,' said Kaldas. Egypt's Rafah crossing in Gaza's south is the only land border that doesn't lead into Israel and has thus become the main entrance gate for humanitarian goods into Gaza. While Egyptians are largely in favor of the Palestinians in Gaza, harsh criticism on Egypt's peace treaty with Israel, which was signed in 1979, or on the collaboration with Israel or the US remains throttled by Egypt's security apparatus. 'Secretary of State Blinken just recently, baselessly and completely unconvincingly certified that Egypt is making progress on the file of political prisoners and rights and freedoms in Egypt, when in fact Egypt is actually doing significantly worse on this front,' said Kaldas. International human rights organization have put the number of political prisoners in Egyptian prisons at more than 70,000. Observers agree that more people are being detained than released. "President el-Sissi has taken advantage of the crisis created by Israel's wars in Gaza and Lebanon to position itself as an essential mediator in the conflict and really just to distract from Egypt's own disastrous human rights crisis and very deep state corruption,' Whitson, executive director of the Washington-based human rights organization Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), told. In January 2025, Egypt has to prove in what way it has undertaken efforts to promote and protect human rights at the upcoming UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The population is largely impoverished, the roughly one-third of Egypt's 113 million people are living at or below the poverty line after years of economic crises. Inflation remains at a high of around 26%; prices of staple foods have skyrocketed by more than 70%. Two years ago, heavily indebted Egypt was still hoping for Saudi grants to avert a financial collapse. This year more than $57 billion was invested in and granted to Egypt by the World Bank, European Union and Gulf countries. In October, high-ranking officials from multiple countries have made visits to Egypt. On Tuesday, Saudi Crown Prince bin Salman met with el-Sissi in Cairo to discuss future investments and trade agreements. On Wednesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi landed in the Egyptian capital for "important talks" with his counterpart, Abdelatty. The last meeting between the Iranian and Egyptian foreign ministers was in 2013. (Source: dw *)

United States
(Friday, 18 October 2024) In his appearance on the PBD Podcast Mr Trump, who is running as the Republican candidate for the upcoming US Presidential Election has claimed he received a phone call on Thursday from Apple's chief executive Cook, in which the tech boss shared concerns about the European Union because the company was forced to pay after breaching EU rules. Mr Cook told him he was concerned about recent financial penalties issued by the EU, which ordered Apple to pay Ireland €13bn in unpaid taxes in September. The EU's highest court upheld an accusation by the bloc's legislative arm, the European Commission, that Ireland gave Apple illegal tax advantages. Mr Cook described the Commission's findings as 'political". The European Commission fined Apple €1.8bn several months earlier in March for allegedly breaking music streaming rules, in a win for rival service Spotify. According to Mr Trump, the Apple chief executive went on to make a remark about the EU using the money received via antitrust fines to run an "enterprise". Antitrust fines paid by firms which breach EU competition rules go towards the bloc's general budget and help to finance the EU and reduce the burden for taxpayers, the Commission's website states. The bloc has set of rules and requirements that firms must comply with in order to offer digital products and services in the region. These include the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and its Digital Markets Act (DMA) and Digital Services Act. Its two digital laws 'aim to rein in powerful "gatekeeper" tech companies, provide more choice for consumers and protect users of online platforms or services from illegal or harmful content'. Mr Trump said he told Mr Cook he would not let the EU take advantage of „our companies", but he needed to "get elected first". The former president has spent some of his campaign trying to woo prominent tech figures, with Tesla and X boss Musk among those backing Mr Trump. He also said he spoke to Google boss Pichai earlier this week, and claims to have had multiple calls with Meta boss Zuckerberg in August. October 18, 2024, Friday // 11:18  Republican presidential candidate Trump has accused President Zelensky of playing a role in initiating the ongoing war in Ukraine. Trump asserted that Zelensky not only failed to prevent the war but actually contributed to its onset, despite the reality of Russia's invasion. "It doesn’t mean that I don’t want to help him, because I have a lot of sympathy for these people. But he should never have allowed the war to begin," Trump stated. (Source: novinite *)

5:47 PM CEST, October 18, 2024  Swann, 46, was a longtime TV journalist before he was fired from an Atlanta station in 2018 after promoting the debunked 'Pizzagate' that alleged Democrats were abducting children to serve as sex slaves. He has since become a social media star who portrays himself as someone daring to ask uncomfortable questions on tough topics - revolving around unfounded claims such as the coronavirus vaccine was a money-making ploy by big pharmaceutical companies, and Israel was a 'participant' in the massacre of Oct. 7, 2023. Swann’s videos were embedded in X posts garnered tens of millions of views. Swann joined Kennedy Jr.’s anti-vaccine organization, Children’s Health Defense, in a lawsuit pending against several news organizations, including the AP, accusing them of violating antitrust laws by 'taking action to identify misinformation', including about COVID-19 and COVID-19 vaccines. Swann worked for Russia’s state-owned media empire for years. He filed paperwork with the Justice Department two years ago to register one of his companies as working for Russian state media. Under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, individuals must register with the Justice Department when they seek to influence U.S. policy and public opinion on behalf of foreign governments. Not doing so can result in criminal charges. Swann’s company, Rebel Media Productions, first registered with the Justice Department in August 2022, saying it worked for RT’s parent company and related entities. The disclosures show Rebel Media Productions was paid more than $6 million in less than two years by RT-related entities. The Justice Department has said RT has links to Russian intelligence agencies, while the U.S. State Department recently unveiled new sanctions on Russian state media. The sanctions target RT’s parent organization, TV Novosti, which Swann contracted with for his Russia-related work. In February, Swann stopped reporting Rebel Media’s work for Russia to the Justice Department, even as his company kept producing RT shows. Swann, a self-described independent journalist launched in April a 12-part video series titled 'Zelenskyy Unmasked.” He promised it would reveal dark truths about President Zelenskyy wich quickly caught the attention of conservative social media influencers who hyped the project to their millions of followers. The Zelenskyy series echoed Russian state media’s messaging that the Ukrainian president is a would-be autocrat who has duped the West into supporting a conflict that Russia will inevitably win. “Curious about the billions of dollars and weapons Congress sent Ukraine?' Trump Jr. posted on X, Truth Social and Threads. In a July interview with the AP, Swann said he owns and is operating two companies - one that generates content for Russian media and another company, Truth in Media, that produces independent journalism, like 'Zelenskyy Unmasked,” for U.S. audiences. Truth in Media, Swann said, isn’t profitable and is funded by wealthy U.S. individuals whom he refused to name. Swann’s shows for U.S. audiences and RT also have similar themes. Truth in Media began teasing the 'Zelenskyy Unmasked” videos earlier this year on its website, writing the “explosive” 12-part series would answer 'who is really benefitting from the $100 billion the U.S. has sent Ukraine.' Many of the guests interviewed in 'Zelenskyy Unmasked” have been RT contributors and guests on its programs. That includes RT contributor Reade, who briefly moved to Moscow after accusing President Biden of assaulting her in the 1990s; former Ukrainian diplomat Telizhenko, who was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury on allegations he had close ties to a 'Russia-linked foreign influence network'; Bentley, an American citizen known to have fought with Kremlin-backed separatists and worked for Russian state media, who died earlier this year in Ukraine and Ritter, a former U.N. weapons inspector sympathetic to Russia whose upstate New York home was raided in August by the FBI. A core group of influencers played a significant role in helping promote the series, shared by at least 9,300 other unique X accounts that have 33 million total followers, according to an AP analysis of 'Zelenskyy Unmasked” X data created by Syracuse University’s Institute for Democracy, Journalism and Citizenship. When Truth In Media promoted the third episode in the series, it tweeted, 'The list of rich and powerful people profiting off the war in Ukraine includes President Biden and his son, but they’re far from the only ones.' Swann said Truth in Media hired Urban Legend to help with marketing, but didn’t know the details of its work. The Urban Legend company said that it had been unaware of Swann’s ties to RT and would no longer work with Truth in Media. In response to the recent sanctions, Swann said his company last month severed all ties to RT. “While we disagree with the censorship of our journalists, who were doing quality work on behalf of our client, we have and will continue to respect the rule of law,” Swann said in a statement. The Justice Department declined to comment. (Source: apnews *)

Globalization

October 18, 2024 10:22 am (EST)  Established in 2009, BRICS was founded on the premise that international institutions were overly dominated by Western powers and had ceased to serve developing countries. BRICS countries seek to build an alternative to what they see as the dominance of the Western viewpoint in major multilateral groupings, such as the World Bank, the Group of Seven (G7), and the UN Security Council. The coalition is not a formal organization, but rather a loose bloc of non-Western economies that coordinate economic and diplomatic efforts around the shared goal. The bloc has sought to coordinate its members’ economic and diplomatic policies, found new financial institutions, and reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar. The term was originally coined by Sachs economist O’Neill in a 2001 research paper in which he argued that the growth of what was then the “BRIC” countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) was poised to challenge the dominant G7 wealthy economies. Russia hosted the first official BRIC summit in 2009, and South Africa joined a year later by invitation from China, forming the five-country grouping that would persist for more than a decade. At the 2023 BRICS summit, invitations extended to six newcomers: Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). All accepted except Argentina, after its newly elected President Milei pledged to turn the country in a pro-West direction, saying that it would not “ally with communists.” Saudi Arabia has reportedly accepted the membership, but has delayed officially joining without giving detailed further explanation. The countries that comprise BRICS are an informal grouping of emerging economies hoping to increase their sway in the global order. The BRICS group has become a major political force in the last two decades, building on its desire to create a counterweight to Western influence in global institutions. The ten BRICS countries now comprise more than a quarter of the global economy and almost half of the world’s population. The group is poised to exert influence over the wars in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine, the shape of the global economic system, the competition between China and the West, and efforts to transition to clean energy. The BRICS heads of state convene annually, with each country taking a one-year chairmanship to set priorities and host a summit. The bloc relies on consensus-based decision-making and is largely informal: it has no defining charter, secretariat, or common funds. Some analysts warn that the bloc could undermine the Western-led international order. The group aims both to push for reform of existing institutions, such as expanding the UN Security Council, and to form negotiating blocs within those institutions. The group emphasizes economic coordination on issues such as tariff policy, export restrictions of critical resources, and investment. In global transactions, which exposes them to Western sanctions, BRICS leaders have long advocated for de-dollarization in favor of increased trade in local currencies or even a potential common BRICS currency. The group’s New Development Bank (NDB) and Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA) are meant to mimic the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF), to invigorate South-South cooperation and reduce dependence on traditional funding sources. Many countries of the Global South believe the World Bank and the IMF are failing to meet the needs of poorer nations, especially in areas such as climate financing. The CRA, a common fund among the BRICS central banks offers support during a currency crisis, limited to BRICS countries. In 2021 the NDB - more than five times smaller than the World Bank - opened to private projects in other emerging-market countries. The NDB offers loans, guarantees, and other financial mechanisms to support private projects that contribute to sustainable development and building out infrastructure. It is intended to offer more flexibility, greater equality among shareholders, and easier access to funds than the World Bank. Its lending focuses on clean energy, transportation, sanitation, and social development. It has sought to devote 40 percent of its projects to tackling climate change. To date, the bank has approved more than $32 billion for ninety-six projects since operations began in 2016. The BRICS countries have sought to reduce the primacy of the U.S. dollar in international trade for more than a decade, primarily by increasing the use of their own currencies for trading, especially China’s renminbi. There is also a push to introduce a new, BRICS-wide currency, of which Brazil’s President Lula da Silva is a major proponent. Other monetary proposals laid out at the 2023 summit included founding a new cryptocurrency or using a combined basket of BRICS currencies. A BRICS currency would require major political compromises, including a banking union, a fiscal union, and general macroeconomic convergence. The dollar, the world’s principal reserve currency, is still used in more than 80 percent of global trade. The BRICS countries face increasing internal tensions and rivalry among members. China and India over their decades-old border dispute as well as competition for economic and geopolitical leadership of the Global South, India’s growing rivalry with China further fueled the desire not to prop up China’s power with a larger group in Beijing’s orbit. China’s economic slump threatens the group’s dynamism. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has also deepened fissures. An International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for Putin’s arrest over war crimes allegedly committed by Russian forces in Ukraine complicated the 2023 BRICS forum in South Africa., forcing Putin to stay home. Some analysts argue the sanctions on oil and other necessities are in fact pushing the BRICS countries closer together. In the past decade, Brazil and South Africa have faced collapsing state capacity, yearslong recessions, chronic corruption, and crumbling infrastructure. Other major dividing lines include rivalries between Saudi Arabia and Iran and between Egypt and Ethiopia. The addition of Egypt and Ethiopia will amplify voices from the African continent. China and Russia have favored expansion, while Brazil and India were more hesitant. Egypt had close commercial ties with China and India, and political ties with Russia. China has long courted Ethiopia, the third-biggest economy in sub-Saharan Africa, with billions of dollars of investment to make the country a hub of its Belt and Road Initiative. The addition of Saudi Arabia and the UAE would bring in the two biggest economies in the Arab world and the second and eighth top oil producers globally. They also play mediation roles in other regions, with Saudi Arabia leading ongoing peace talks for Sudan’s civil war and the war in Ukraine, the UAE hosting India-Pakistan stability talks, and both countries considering normalizing relations with Israel for the first time in decades. Both countries are hoping that BRICS membership will help them focus on economic development. The rivalry between Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in which they have at times supported opposing sides of conflicts, could carry into BRICS. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are major security partners of the United States, Iran and Russia are staunch adversaries of U.S. influence, while China sees itself as locked in economic and geopolitical competition with the United States. Brazil, India, South Africa have had warmer relations with the U.S. Western countries have largely downplayed the group’s growth. White House National Security Advisor Sullivan said that Washington doesn’t see BRICS as a geopolitical rival, some European policymakers have cautioned that the anti-West sentiment is growing more confrontational. They see the expansion as the result of a lackluster Western response to low-income countries’ needs. They say Western countries need to begin reforming financial institutions in earnest. Other analysts say the BRICS de-dollarization efforts could eventually undermine the strength of the dollar and thus the health of the U.S. economy. Russia holds the rotating BRICS presidency this year and has set out to use its time as chair to focus on establishing a more “fair world order” and steering the pivot to local currencies and payment systems at its October summit in Kazan. Analysts expect Putin will use the Russia-led BRICS meeting to attempt to show Russia has not been isolated by Western pressure. 2024 priorities include integrating new members and establishing a new category of BRICS partner countries that will likely fall short of a full membership. Current members have indicated they seek to bring in more members and partner countries to gain access to other regional trade blocs. More than forty countries have expressed interest in joining, At least twenty reportedly applied to join after the 2023 summit expansion. (Source: cfr *)

Oct 17, 2024 2:48 AM ED  The Pentagon is stating that B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, along with other U.S. forces, conducted a strike on Houthi underground weapon storage sites in Yemen. It could have involved the combat debut of the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP). The MOP, weighing in around 30,000lbs, can only be carried by the B-2. It is specifically designed and has been repeatedly upgraded to go after deeply buried, high-value targets, especially those in Iran. These sites include command and control centers and missile storage and launch facilities, as well as aircraft storage areas, tunneled into mountains. 'But above all else, the MOP’s top targets would be extremely hardened sites related to Iran’s nuclear program'. White House Correspondents’ Association award winner, Ravid, CNN producer Peled and New York Times producer Schwartz are all alumni of Israel’s Unit 8200 – a covert ops, spying and cyber-warfare unit – and now have prominent media positions. Unit 8200 has also been widely identified as the group behind last month’s pager attack in Lebanon that injured thousands of civilians. 'While I’m not saying these individuals are spies, are people with these pasts truly appropriate candidates to write Americans’ news about Israel/Palestine? What if it were ex-Hamas/Hezbollah intelligence operatives now running things at CNN or elsewhere?' MintPress writer, Macleod asked on X. Former Unit 8200 agents created the Pegasus software used to surveil journalists, activists and heads of state around the world. As Europe continues to grapple with energy dependence on Russia, the geopolitical ripples of TurkStream will be felt for years to come, shaping the region’s energy politics and foreign policy alignments. The TurkStream pipeline has shifted the geopolitical and energy landscape in Europe and the broader Eurasian region. For Ukraine, the bypass of its traditional transit routes represents both an economic and geopolitical loss, heightening concerns about isolation and vulnerability in its confrontation with Russia. For Turkiye, the pipeline bolsters its position as a regional energy hub, enhancing its influence in both Europe and the Middle East. Hungary’s reliance on TurkStream strengthens its ties with both Russia and Turkiye, but complicates EU unity on energy security. (Source: middleeastmonitor *)

October 08, 2024 07:37 GMT  In 2023, the number of live births in Hungary hit a historic low and the population shrunk by 15,000 people, according to data from Hungary's Central Statistics Office. Over the past decade, Hungary's population has fallen from around 10 million to 9.7 million. In women over the age of 40's cohort group, according to recently published results of Hungary's 2022 census, both the number and the proportion of childfree people are on the rise. In power since 2010, Fidesz is trying to halt this population decline without relying on immigration, as other European countries have done. While in power, Fidesz has implemented family-friendly policies, including interest-free loans for married couples with children, housing subsidies, and tax exemptions for mothers with four or more children. Hungary's total fertility rate (the average number of births per woman) has recovered from its 2011 low, but is still far below the rate of about 2.1 required to keep the population constant without immigration. According to demographer Kapitány, in 2023, people's decision to have children was complicated by Orbán's government changing its policies - regularly implementing new measures and revoking others. The new incentives will lose their effectiveness, as [people] don't count on them. ’What Fidesz is calling a family policy is a financial trap, and families are becoming victims without realizing’, (Source: rferl *)

2024-10-08 08:02  The Iranian-backed Hezbollah
escalated its military campaign against Israel, launching a series of rocket attacks on multiple Israeli military positions across northern Israel and beyond. The rocket attacks targeted Israeli forces stationed in the Shlomi and Hanita settlements, as well as near the Marj military post. Additional strikes were launched on Israeli artillery positions in Dishon and Dalton, with another hitting Israeli forces near the Yiron settlement. Hezbollah also reported firing rockets at the Israeli military intelligence base "Glilot" on the outskirts of Tel Aviv, operated by Israel’s elite Unit 8200. The group also confirmed a separate barrage of 'Fadi 1' rockets targeting a military base south of Haifa and launched another wave of rockets at Tiberias, located about 65 kilometers away. Northern Haifa was also hit in strikes later that day. The Israeli military reported that nearly 190 projectiles were fired into Israel on Monday, injuring at least 12 people A spokesperson confirmed the death of one soldier. Israel launched airstrikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, as well as on several villages in southern Lebanon, including Al-Khiam, Ter Debba, Blat, Nakoura, Dweir, Zawtar, Adloun, Ansariya, and Alma Al-Shaab. The strikes also extended to towns in the Bekaa Valley. Lebanon’s Ministry of Health reported that 2,083 people had been killed and 9,869 wounded since the start of the Israeli aggression. October 8, 2024  A Nuclear Warning from Hurricane Helene: Nuclear power is actually a hazard under climate chaos conditions. We are led by climate criminals who go not only unpunished, but who are routinely re-elected. No matter who wins in November, we are looking at drilling (Trump) or fracking (Harris) or possibly both. And, of course, more nuclear power! The push for license extensions for our aging reactor fleet is particularly heinous. The lapdog nuclear regulator, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), has been exposed by the Government Accountability Office in a damning report * as entirely uninterested in how the ravages of the climate crisis might jeopardize the safety of nuclear power plants. 'NRC mostly uses historical data to identify and assess safety risks, rather than data from future climate projections'. Because of the extreme radiological risks, some nuclear power plants in the path of the hurricane were shut down as a preemptive precaution including Hatch in Georgia, when people are desperate for electricity. At the Crystal River nuclear power plant on Florida’s Gulf Coast, floodwaters swamped the site, including buildings, sumps, and lift stations. The plant has been shuttered since 2013 but all of the high-level irradiated radioactive fuel waste is still stored there. We saw a a nuclear plant inundated by a massive storm surge at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan on March 11, 2011. “We are still in the process of obtaining access and assessing the damage, but due to the nature of this event we anticipate difficulty with estimating the total discharge amount of wastewater, and impacts are unknown at this time,' wrote plant owner Duke in its report. In other words, we may never know. Crystal River owner Duke is the very same company that is trying to secure a license extension for its three Oconee reactors in South Carolina that sit downstream from not one but two dams! The three reactors are sited 300 feet below the water level in Lake Jocassee behind Jocassee Dam and five feet below the water level in the immediately adjacent Lake Keowee. The hundreds of billions of dollars in costs that could be the consequence of such risks, will be paid mostly by us, the taxpayers. (Source: countepunch / Beyond Nuclear International)

Pacific Ocean

October 16, 2024  Transforming the Pacific into a genuine powder keg? For the past 80 years, an island chain of military bastions running from Japan to Australia in the Pacific has served as a crucial fulcrum for American global power. Aware that the advent of the long-range bomber and the future possibility of atomic warfare had rendered the historic concept of coastal defense remarkably irrelevant, in the post-war years Washington extended its North American “defenses” deep into the Western Pacific. Starting with the expropriation of 100 Japanese military bases, the U.S. built its initial postwar Pacific naval bastions at Okinawa and, thanks to a 1947 agreement, at Subic Bay in the Philippines. As the Cold War engulfed Asia in 1950 with the beginning of the Korean conflict, the U.S. extended those bases for 5,000 miles along the entire Pacific littoral through mutual-defense agreements with five Asia-Pacific allies - Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Australia. For the next 40 years to the very end of the Cold War, the Pacific littoral was allowing for America to defend one continent (North America) and dominate another (Eurasia). Just as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has revitalized the NATO alliance, so China’s increasingly aggressive behavior and a sustained U.S. military build-up in the region have strengthened Washington’s position on the Pacific littoral, bringing several wavering allies back into the Western fold, while encouraging a massive militarization of the Indo-Pacific region. After withdrawing some U.S. forces from Iraq in 2012 and refusing to commit significant numbers of troops for regime change in Syria, the Obama White House deployed a battalion of Marines to Darwin in northern Australia in 2014. Washington gained access to five Philippine bases near the South China Sea and a new South Korean naval base at Jeju Island on the Yellow Sea. But between 1998 and 2014, the U.S. Navy declined from 333 ships to 271. That 20% reduction, combined with a shift to long-term deployments in the Middle East, degraded the Navy’s position in the Pacific. After a decade of fighting misbegotten wars in Afghanistan and Iraq of Washington, a rising China began to turn its economic gains into a serious bid for global power. Beijing started building bases in the South China Sea, where oil and natural gas deposits are rife, and expanding its navy. The Trump administration added the construction of 46 new ships to the Pentagon budget, which was to raise the total fleet to 326 vessels by 2023. By 2024 China had the world’s largest navy with 234 'warships,' while the U.S. deployed 219. The Chinese combat capacity, according to American Naval Intelligence, is 'increasingly of comparable quality to U.S. ships.' Yet such seeming strength contains both a heightened risk of great power conflict and possible political pressures that could fracture America’s Asia-Pacific alliance relatively soon. The State Department reinforced the U.S. position on the Pacific littoral by negotiating three relatively new diplomatic agreements with Asia-Pacific allies Australia, Britain, India, and the Philippines. Though bristling with armaments and seemingly strong, this ad hoc Western coalition may yet prove, like NATO in Europe, vulnerable to sudden setbacks from rising partisan pressures, both in the United States and among its allies. American relations with the Philippines suffered a severe setback in 1991 when that country was forcing the U.S. 7th Fleet out of its massive naval base at Subic Bay. After three years, China occupied some shoals also claimed by the Philippines in the South China Sea. Within a decade, the Chinese had started transforming them into a network of military bases. In April 2014 the Philippines signed a defense cooperation agreement with Washington, allowing the U.S. military quasi-permanent facilities at five Filipino bases, including two on the shores of the South China Sea. The government announced a $35 billion military modernization plan, after signed deals with Tokyo, India and South Korea, purcasing cutters, missiles and new naval vessels, negotiating with Korean suppliers to procure 40 modern jet fighters. By 2018, China’s army was operating anti-aircraft missiles, mobile missile launchers, and military radar on five artificial 'islands' in the Spratly archipelago. In the April 2024 edition of the two nation's big military maneuvers in Philippine waters, the U.S. deployed its mobile Typhon Mid-Range Missile Launcher capable of hitting China’s coast. The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving Australia, India, Japan, and the U.S., first launched in 2007, has extended American military power into the waters of the Indian Ocean by 2017. Since 2020, the Quad has made the annual Malabar (India) naval exercise. In the elaborate four-power drill aircraft carrier battle groups maneuver in waters ranging from the Arabian Sea to the East China Sea. The Biden White House's controversial AUKUS defense compact between Australia, Great Britain, and the U.S. led to agreement in September 2021. As part of Anglo-Saxonization of American foreign and military policy, it supports Australia in acquiring nuclear-powered submarines for the Royal Australian Navy. Australia spend $360 billion to build eight nuclear submarines at its Adelaide shipyards over a decade. It will gain access to British submarine designs and top secret U.S. nuclear propulsion, joining the ranks of just six powers with such complex technology. Australia will also host four American Virginia-class nuclear subs at a naval base in Western Australia and buy as many as five of those stealthy submarines from the U.S. in the early 2030s. Canberra will also face additional costs for the joint development of undersea drones, hypersonic missiles, and quantum sensing as a major geopolitical and military ally in any future conflict with China. With more than 200 times the ship-building capacity of the United States, China’s advantage in warships will almost certainly continue to grow. America’s active ally Japan’s navy has more than 50 warships and South Korea 30 more. India announced that the latest exercise this October would feature live-fire maneuvers in the Bay of Bengal. Last month a joint Chinese-Russian “Ocean-24” exercise mobilized 400 ships, 120 aircraft, and 90,000 troops in a vast arc from the Baltic Sea across the Arctic to the northern Pacific Ocean. Beijing is already putting relentless pressure on Taiwan’s sovereignty, breaching that island’s airspace and crossing the median line in the Taiwan Straits hundreds of times monthly. (Wednesday), 16 October 2024 - 07:51  This Monday, Nato launched its annual tactical nuclear exercise Steadfast Noon, including personell from eight airbases in Europe. A British electronic gathering flight this week, was a first-of-a-kind. With take-off from Souda Bay in Greece, the plane flew over Bulgaria, the Black Sea, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Norway before conducting a 'usual sortie' outside the Murmansk region, home to Russia’s ballistic missile submarines. From there, the plane made it back to its home base Waddington military air base in England. Air-to-air refuelling of the RC-135W took place over Romania and Poland. It is expected that Russia soon will launch its annual nuclear strategic exercise GROM (Thunder). The Barents Sea region will then play a key role with launching of ballistic missiles from at least one submarine. In recent years, the Russian nuclear forces have also included nuke-capable cruise missiles from both warships and aircraft in the exercise. To protect its nuclear weapons, the country's military keeps eye on movements by NATO and neighbouring Norway. (Source: thebarentsobserver *)

Oct 05, 2024 10:29 AM IST  Hurricane Helene has brought along historic flooding and a storm surge of over 15 feet. Musk, who's been hands-on with relief efforts, shared with his 200 million followers a screenshot of a conversation where someone claimed the airspace was “shut down” and that the FAA was 'limiting flights.' “SpaceX engineers are trying to deliver Starlink terminals & supplies to devastated areas in North Carolina right now and @FEMA is both failing to help AND won’t let others help. This is unconscionable!!", he wrote. Musk earlier slammed Biden’s administration saying, “The level of belligerent government incompetence is staggering!!” “The claims about FEMA confiscating or taking commodities, supplies, or resources in North Carolina, Tennessee, or any state impacted by Helene are false,' said FEMA’s director of public affairs, in a statement. 05.10.24, 10:18 AM   What's next for oil and gas prices ? Any major escalation of tensions in the Middle East conjures up memories of the oil embargo that followed the start of the Yom Kippur war in 1973, which quadrupled oil prices. However, the global supply of oil has been altered radically since the 1970s, with the US becoming the world's largest oil producer. Months of war between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah, two Iranian proxies, did little to boost prices for OPEC and its 12 oil-producing nations. Only the possibility of a direct confrontation between Israel and Iran moved the needle. Oil prices rose than USD 6 per barrel this week and prices at the pump moved higher as well. The average price for a gallon of gas rose 5 cents from last week. US gas prices typically rise along with crude because the price of oil makes up half the cost of a gallon of gasoline. The national average for gas has risen to about USD 3.18 per gallon, according to American Automobile Association. (AAA). But that's still 13 cents less than a month ago and 60 cents less than a year ago. The record national average high of USD 5 per gallon was reached in June 2022. AAA estimates that approximately 1.2 million of its members live in households with one or more electric vehicles. The organisation believes that tepid gas demand and low oil costs will likely keep prices at gas pumps sliding. The long-term expectation is for oil prices to move lower, not higher. That's because the balance between supply and demand has tilted toward supply. The International Energy Agency said demand for oil in the first half of this year rose by the smallest amount since 2020. Meanwhile, supplies have continued to increase and the OPEC+ alliance, made up of members of the producers cartel and allied countries including Russia, has said it plans to release more oil into the market starting in December. Iran produces 3.99 million barrels per day, which is 4 per cent of the world total. By comparison, Saudi Arabia produces about 9 million barrels a day. Despite sanctions imposed by the West that have hampered production and export levels, Iran continues to find ways to maintain its oil sector, sometimes using creative methods like blending and re-labelling oil for sale to markets like China. As of the middle of this year, Iran was exporting about 2 million barrels of oil a day, up from 500,000 in 2020. Export terminals like Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf could be a target for an Israeli strike. They play a key role in shipping crude oil abroad, primarily to Asian countries, including China. Kloza, global head of energy analysis with the Oil Price Information Service, believes oil prices are approaching a top, with US crude oil at USD 74.38 and Brent crude, the international benchmark, at USD 78.05. The long-term outlook is for lower prices. 2025 looks very problematic for high prices with supply almost certainly outpacing demand by 500,000 to 1 million barrels a day,” Kloza said.  (Source: telegraphindia / AP)

Canada
October 15, 2024  Canadian officials are encouraging Israeli violence in Iran. Once again, they are supporting the neoconservatives who view the genocide in Gaza, weakening of Hezbollah and Iran’s response to Israeli provocations as a bid to remake the Middle East just like in the build-up to the last US invasion of Iraq. In recent years Canadian politicians have been increasingly close with the violent, cult-like, Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), which has assisted Israel in assassinating Iranian scientists. The MEK is excited at the prospects of Israel’s war with Iran as is the son of the deposed Shah, former crown prince Pahlavi. Both view an Israel/US war against Iran as an opportunity to come to power. Last week Blair said it would be 'appropriate' for Israel to bomb Iranian oil facilities. 'When we talk about (Israel’s) ability to defend (itself), certainly that would include missile launch sites, military installations, airfields from which these attacks are being launched,' Canada’s defence minister said. Asked whether that included attacking Iranian oil facilities, Blair said he thought that would be 'appropriate.' Conservative leader Poilievre incited the apartheid state to go further. He stated, 'I think the idea of allowing a genocidal, theocratic, unstable dictatorship that is desperate to avoid being overthrown by its own people to develop nuclear weapons is about the most dangerous and irresponsible thing that the world could ever allow,' Poilievre said. 'If Israel were to stop that genocidal, theocratic, unstable government from acquiring nuclear weapons, it would be a gift by the Jewish state to humanity.' If Israel carried out Poilievre and Blair’s positions it would likely elicit a significant reaction from Iran. In turn, Israel would probably escalate and the two countries could descend into a war that may directly involve the US, which just announced it is sending 100 troops to Israel to operate a sophisticated anti-missile system. Poilievre’s claim that Iran is 'genocidal' is absurd. It’s Israel that’s been committing genocide for a year in Gaza. Iran is also less 'dictatorial' than other countries in the region. Saudi Arabia has already executed 213 people this year and is far more repressive towards women. While Iran’s 290-person parliament reserves five seats for Armenians (two) Assyrians, Zoroastrians and Jews, the Saudi monarchy effectively bans the Christian Bible. (Source: original.antiwar *)

Oct. 4, (2024) 6 a.m. EDT  Weapons sales are a pillar of American foreign policy in the Middle East. Historically, the U.S. gives more money to Israel for weapons than it does to any other country. Israel spends most of those American tax dollars to buy weapons and equipment made by U.S. arms manufacturers. There’s never any consequences for doing it. The United States first began selling significant amounts of weapons to Israel in the early 1970s. Until then, Israel had relied on an array of home-grown and international purchases, notably from France, while the Soviet Union armed Israel’s adversaries. While Israel has its own arms industry, the country relies heavily on American jets, bombs and other weapons in Gaza. Since October 2023, the U.S. has shipped more than 50,000 tons of weaponry. The U.S. has been a stalwart ally of Israel for decades, with presidents of both parties praising the country as a beacon of democracy in a dangerous region filled with threats to American interests. On Jan. 31, Secretary of State Blinken hosted an agency-wide town hall at an auditorium at the State Department headquarters where he fielded pointed questions from his subordinates about Gaza. He said the suffering of civilians was “absolutely gut wrenching and heartbreaking." “But it is a question of making judgments,' Blinken said. “We started with the premise on October 7 that Israel had the right to defend itself, and more than the right to defend itself, the right to try to ensure that October 7 would never happen again.” At the embassy in Jerusalem the unwritten policy was to “protect Israel from scrutiny' and facilitate the arms flow no matter how many human rights abuses are reported. The embassy has even historically resisted accepting funds from the State Department’s Middle East bureau earmarked for investigating human rights issues throughout Israel. The government’s two foremost authorities on humanitarian assistance - the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department’s refugees bureau - concluded in the spring that Israel had deliberately blocked deliveries of food and medicine into Gaza and that weapons sales should be halted. But Blinken rejected those findings and, weeks later, told Congress that the State Department had concluded that Israel was not blocking aid. The pressure to keep the arms pipeline moving also comes from the U.S. military contractors who make the weapons. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also publicly pressured the Biden administration to hasten arms transfers. “Give us the tools and we’ll finish the job a lot faster,” he said in June. Initially, a country makes a request and the local embassy, which is under the State Department’s jurisdiction, writes a cable called a “country team assessment” to judge the fitness of the nation asking for the weapons. This is just the beginning of a complex process, but it’s a crucial step because of the embassies’ local expertise. Then, the bulk of that review is conducted by the State Department’s arms transfers section, known as the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, with input from other bureaus. For Israel and NATO allies, if the sale is worth at least $100 million for weapons or $25 million for equipment, Congress also gets final approval. If lawmakers try to block a sale, which is rare, the president can sidestep with a veto. In the months before August and since, an array of State Department officials urged that Israel be completely or partially cut off from weapons sales under laws that prohibit arming countries with a pattern or clear risk of violations. Top State Department political appointees repeatedly rejected those appeals. Government experts have for years unsuccessfully tried to withhold or place conditions on arms sales to Israel because of credible allegations that the country had violated Palestinians’ human rights using American-made weapons. In recent years, at least six high-ranking officials in the he State Department’s arms transfers bureau left their posts and joined lobbying firms and military contractors. Companies that profit from the wars in Gaza and Ukraine frequently call or email. The pressure also reaches lawmakers’ offices. “The article is biased and seeks to portray legitimate and routine contacts between Israel and the Embassy in Washington with State Department officials as improper. Its goal appears to be casting doubt on the security cooperation between two friendly nations and close allies,' a spokesperson of the Israeli government said in a statement. (Source: propublica *)

October 14, 2024 4:00 AM CET  Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has concocted a way to let Trump, if he successfully makes it to the White House for a second term come November, wriggle out of a $50 billion loan the U.S., the European Union and leaders of the G7 offered to Ukraine to back its fight against Russia. Hungary says it won’t consent to a change in rules that would allow Washington to play a major role in the loan until after the U.S. election. That would let Trump off the hook, allowing him to tell Republican voters that, if elected, he won’t give Ukraine another cent. Washington insists that the EU needs to extend the sanctions renewal timeframe to at least 36 months. Under current rules, the EU’s sanctions come up for renewal every six months. While every other leader is in favor of extending the sanctions rollover period to 36 months as 'requested' by the U.S., Orbán refuses. According to the EU’s own rules, all 27 member countries need to approve any changes to the sanctions rules. It’s about helping Trump,” said an EU diplomat. If Brussels and Washington jointly underwrite the €35 billion loan, a reelected Trump would be tied to servicing it for years. But if the loan is approved without the U.S., he would have no such obligation. Now, the U.S. is unlikely to participate substantially. Still, Europe is likely to go ahead anyway. As Orbán threatens to use his veto in Brussels, the U.S. signaled that it is considering participating in the loan - albeit with a significantly lower amount - even if the EU cannot prolong its sanctions period, another EU diplomat and a European Commission official said. One of the options involves Washington contributing $5 billion, which roughly equals the amount of Russian assets that it holds domestically. The Commission official believes that the U.S. does not want to arrive empty-handed at a meeting of G7 finance ministers in Washington at the end of October that will likely decide the fine print of the $50 billion loan. Japan recently signaled that it might pull out of the loan if the U.S. does not take part. If Hungary refuses to budge on the sanctions duration, the EU is likely to finalize the loan on its own terms because its budget rules make it much easier to get the payment approved by national capitals before year-end. The EU is fast-tracking legislation to pay up to €35 billion to Ukraine, which covers the U.S. share of the loan and is set to be finalized by the end of October. But penny-pinching governments in the EU are reluctant to increase their contribution to cover the shortfall from the U.S. (Source: politico)

United States
Oct 03, 2024  Will the post-Oct. 7 war permanently alter Washington's 80-year commitment to the Jewish state? The already deeply polarized debate over the U.S.-Israel relationship is likely to become more intense in the future. In the U S.-Israeli understandings reached in the aftermath of the June 1967 war, the U.S. pledged to maintain Israel’s conventional military superiority over any combination of regional enemies. Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge (QME) is a commitment enshrined in U.S. law. Israeli dependence upon Washington's unquestioning direct military engagement remain critical.  Israel’s long-held contention at the heart of U.S.-Israel strategic cooperation - that the conventional arsenal supplied by the U.S. to Israel, or QME, enables it to “defend itself by itself ” - undermines deployment of U.S. forces to defend against Iranian missile attacks against Israel. Washington has responded with more weapons, and more money for Israel - well over $300 billion in all, the most U.S. aid provided to a single foreign country by far. The United States is a gerontocracy whose most important leaders were politicized 'in an era when Israel was viewed as, in effect, a post-Holocaust gift to international Jewry', and to criticize it was to in some real sense align with anti-semites. The U.S. is still effectively enabling Israel to escalate even as it calls for regional de-escalation. The U.S. isn’t incapable of reforming the relationship - it’s unwilling. Some 'incalculable portion" of younger Americans is less committed to virtual carte blanche for Israel’s leaders. Israel's "right to defend itself" cannot offer an adequate moral justification for the brutal punishment inflicted on the Palestinian people. The relationship is contributing more than ever to the geopolitical weakening of America. As the Biden administration frantically runs cover for Israeli criminal actions, the cost to the U.S. in political, reputational, legal and other arenas increases exponentially. It seems that there is nothing Israel could do that would cause this administration to impose consequences or restrict the vast flow of American resources into Israel's war machine, even as it threatens to drag the United States into war and potentially to destroy the Democrats' chance of retaining control of the White House. The next generation of American voters has demonstrated they will not support the U.S. sending billions of tax dollars to a country that murders and starves entire populations. Pro-Israel groups and their congressional supporters have attempted to silence debate and arrest the growth of pro-Palestinian sentiment. State laws have been enacted penalizing individuals or groups that endorse sanctions on Israel and they’ve expanded the definition of antisemitism to include legitimate criticism of Israel. There’s been pressure from Republicans and donors to impose severe speech restrictions on university campuses and 'dark money' groups are spending over $100 million to target the campaigns of members of Congress sympathetic towards Palestinians. (October 12, 2024) 10:54  It has become a ritual now for some foreign leaders to have three meetings while in the United States, one with Biden, another with Harris and a third with Trump. In the nearly four years since he left the White House, Trump has acted as something of a shadow president on international affairs operating out of what he used to call the Winter White House at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. Even before he kicked off a comeback bid to reclaim his old office, foreign governments realized that Trump was still a force in American politics and that they needed to take him into account in their dealings with the United States. Now that he is the Republican nominee for president in next month’s election, foreign leaders have been playing up to Trump even more. A parade of world leaders has made the pilgrimage to Mar-a-Lago or to Trump Tower in New York, including the leaders of Ukraine, Israel, Poland, Hungary, Argentina, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and other countries. The crown prince of Saudi Arabia rang up Trump’s cellphone. The newly elected prime minister of Britain dropped by last month for dinner. "Very unusual for a former president,” said Shapiro, a former State Department official who is now director of the U.S. program at the European Council on Foreign Relations. "I suppose it comes from his status as both a former and possibly future president, which is of course unique.” "As a former president, he has the contacts and the relationships,” Shapiro added. "As a possible future president, he has the potential power to deliver for foreign leaders in the not-too-distant future.” 'Trump, long an admirer of Putin, has said that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 was "very smart” and refused to say he hoped Ukraine would win. He went so far this year as to say he would "encourage” Russia to "do whatever the hell they want” in terms of attacking NATO allies that have not spent enough on their own militaries'. "Trump was lobbied by competing world leaders. In March, he hosted Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of Hungary, a skeptic of helping Ukraine. Then in April, Cameron, the foreign secretary of Britain at the time, traveled to Mar-a-Lago and a week later President Duda of Poland met with Trump in New York, both to implore the former president to release his effective hold on the Ukrainian aid'. Days later, with Johnson finally putting the measure on the floor, Congress passed $60.8 billion in aid to Ukraine in both chambers on strong bipartisan votes, although a majority of Republicans still voted against it in the House. The dispute left President Zelenskyy in an awkward position. In an interview with The New Yorker, Zelenskyy questioned Trump’s claim to be able to settle the war in 24 hours if elected. Trump fired back. 'The president of Ukraine is in our country,” he said at a campaign event. "He is making little nasty aspersions toward your favorite president - me. We continue to give billions of dollars to a man who refuses to make a deal - Zelenskyy.' (Source: japantimes / The New York Times)

Oct 10, 2024 at 10:15 AM EDT  A group linked to a pro-Palestinian hacktivist movement has launched a catastrophic cyberattack revealing the details of 31 million people, compromising their email addresses and screen names. An account on X under the name SN_BlackMeta claimed responsibility for the attack on The Internet Archive, a nonprofit organization, and implied that further attacks were planned. The Internet Archive is known for its digital library and the Wayback Machine. (Source: newsweek)

October 10, 2024 5:30 AM  Flooded electric cars going up in flames. Patronis, Florida’s chief financial officer and state fire marshal, issued a statement on Monday detailing a string of fires in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which flooded much of the Gulf Coast just two week ago. The state found 50,000 EV and hybrid registrations in the path of Hurricane Milton’s storm surge and counted at least 64 lithium battery fires after Hurricane Helene. EVs accounted for 17 of those but the rest were devices like scooters, hoverboards and golf carts. One fire was even sparked by an electric wheelchair. (Source: msn / Miami Herald)

October 10, 2024  The ’far-right’ conspiracy site Gateway Pundit boosted Greene’s claims with a grab-bag set of testimonials from other merchants of paranoia. The piece highlights the findings of no less an authority than Kennedy Jr., who declared that nefarious deep-state actors have seized control of the weather via the Gates Foundation and the World Economic Forum. “They aggravate the problem, and sell us the solution,” Kennedy breathlessly announced. “The solution they want is more social controls.” (Source: thenation *)

Oct 10, 2024 1:08 PM EDT  In 2022, the U.S. government announced a self-imposed moratorium on destructive direct-ascent anti-satellite weapon testing and called on others to do the same. Such testing, like one Russia conducted in 2021, creates clouds of debris that pose significant threats to other objects in orbit. A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket carrying one of two X-37B reusable spaceplanes was launched from the Kennedy Space Center’s Launch Complex 39A on December 28, 2023. The U.S. Space Force, to which the two X-37Bs are now assigned, announced planned orbital maneuvers as part of the current Orbital Test Vehicle 7 (OTV-7) mission earlier today. One of America’s secretive X-37Bs is set to perform a series of aerobraking maneuvers – a series of passes using the drag of Earth’s atmosphere – that will significantly change its orbit, around Earth while expending minimal fuel and safely dispose of its service module components in accordance with recognized standards for space debris mitigation which is said to be a first-of-its-kind event for the mini-space shuttle. This is part of the seventh known X-37B mission, which began last December, and has already involved the reusable spaceplane operating in a much higher orbit than ever before. As noted, the mini-shuttle will have to pass relatively close to the Earth to drag in the atmosphere to execute the maneuver at all. “Since December 28, 2023, the United States Space Force, supported by the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office, has conducted radiation effect experiments and has been testing Space Domain Awareness technologies in a Highly Elliptical Orbit,” in its release today, Space Force cited. “This novel and efficient series of maneuvers demonstrates the Space Force’s commitment to achieving groundbreaking innovation as it conducts national security missions in space,” Secretary of the Air Force Kendall said in a statement. The reusable spaceplane has a truckbed-sized main payload bay and can carry additional payloads on a service module adapter attached to its tail end. Space Delta 9 is the specific unit within the Space Force that now oversees the X-37Bs. It has an “orbital warfare” mission for preparing, presenting and projecting assigned and attached forces for the purpose of conducting protect and defend operations and providing national decision authorities with response options to deter orbital threats. Space-based early warning satellites are the most commonly cited capabilities in this ecosystem. Currently, the Air Force only acknowledges having only one “counter-space” system, a terrestrial electronic warfare jammer called the Counter Communications System (CCS). “We … are looking at the role of EW [electronic warfare], particularly against some of the space threats that are coming out. So the space-based side of it’s very important to us,” Air Force Secretary Kendall told on the sidelines of the Air & Space Forces Association’s (AFA) main annual conference last month. In the face of the ever-expanding threats to U.S. assets in orbit, including Russian work on a new space-based nuclear-armed anti-satellite weapon, Space Force is “creating counter-space capabilities that allows us to be more resilient… and then when they [adversaries] have offensive capabilities of their own, our ability to either maneuver, to deny, to hide, to run,” Chief of Space Operations Saltzman said. Aerobraking maneuvers could be one means for space-based assets to evade hostile attacks. (Source: twz *)

Európai Parlament
Szerda, 2024 október 9. 09:09:49 - 09:36:43. Plenáris ülés. A Magyar Elnökség tevékenységi programjának bemutatása. Orbán Viktor, a Tanács soros elnöke: – Tisztelt Elnök Asszony! Másodszor mutatom be Önöknek a magyar elnökség programját. 34 éve vagyok parlamenti képviselő, ezért tudom, hogy megtiszteltetés, hogy Önök most meghallgatnak engem. Miniszterelnökként beszélni a parlamenti képviselők előtt mindig megtiszteltetés. Azért jöttem most ide Önökhöz Strasbourgba, hogy bemutassam, mit javasol a magyar elnökség Európának ebben a válságos időszakban. Első helyre soroljuk a versenyképesség problémáját. A világkereskedelmi részesedésünk csökken. A földgázárak itt négyszer-ötször magasabbak. Várjuk, a tagállamok várják az adminisztratív terhek csökkentését, várjuk a túlszabályozás enyhítését, várjuk a megfizethető energia biztosítását, várjuk a zöld iparpolitikát, várjuk a belső piac erősítését, várjuk a tőkepiaci uniót, s a tagállamok várják a kereskedelempolitika szélesítését, blokkosítás helyett a konnektivitás-növelő kereskedelempolitikát! A sikertelen migrációs politika következménye is világos. Több tagállam a menekültügyi rendszerből való kimaradás lehetőségeit igyekszik megteremteni. A migráció mellett Európát számos egyéb biztonsági kihívás is érinti. A magyar elnökség a saját példáját, Magyarország példáját tudja felajánlani. Mi a nemzeti össztermékünk mintegy 2,5 százalékát fordítjuk védelmi kiadásokra, ennek nagy része fejlesztés. Védelmi beszerzéseink túlnyomó többsége európai védelmi ipari forrásokból származik, és a védelmi ipar valamennyi szegmensében zajlanak ipari beruházások Magyarországon európai szereplők részvételével. A magyar elnökség kiemelt témája a bővítés is. A magyar elnökség stratégiai vitát kezdeményezett: a mezőgazdaságon túl a kohéziós politika jövőjéről is zajlanak a viták.

European Union
October 9th 2024  Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU claims to have supported Ukraine through financial and military assistance with US$121 billion. During that period, the EU has cumulated a trade deficit with Russia of the same amount. This cannot possibly be a sensible approach to support Ukraine and reduce Russia’s capacity to wage war. The EU has implemented a series of sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. The EU’s response to the war has been undermined by the level of trade many EU states continue to do with Russia. The EU has a cumulative merchandise trade deficit with Russia of US$120 billion since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine or 5 percent of Russia’s annual GDP – a  net transfer of resources to Russia. The EU rethoric, claims that it will 'remain determined to keep acting to further reduce Russia’s sources of revenue and capacity to wage war'. The EU’s approach to Russia is self-defeating and risks prolonging the war. Russia’s foreign exchange reserves had been frozen in March 2022. Russia’s economy has been doing relatively well. International banks show an increase in cross-border liabilities vis-à-vis residents of Russia from US$155 billion in March 2022 to US$254 billion in March 2024. It took one year to decline from a post-pandemic peak deficit of US$19.5 billion in March 2022 to a surplus of US$0.7 billion in March 2023. In January-May 2024, the average trade deficit with Russia of Hungary was still US$0.3 billion and of Slovakia US$0.4 billion per month. EU cumulative mineral fuel imports from Russia since March 2022 through May 2024 amount to US$166 billion. They fell from an average of US$10.6 billion per month during January-May 2019 to US$2.0 billion per month or 19 percent of their pre-war level. Belgium still imports 54 percent of its pre-war level, Spain 58 percent, the Czech Republic 77 percent, Slovakia 88 percent, Hungary 138 percent and  Germany 1 percent of its pre-war level. Russian gas still enjoys high imports at 83 percent of pre-war levels. In January-May 2024, Belgium and the Netherlands were importing more than two times more Russian gas than prior to the war and Spain seven times. Hungary, the largest importer of Russian gas in the EU, imported nearly double the amount in January-May 2024 compared with January-May 2019. India increased mineral fuel imports from Russia during January and May 2019 from an average of US$0.3 billion per month to US$3.9 billion per month during January and May 2024. (Source: blog-lse)

Ukraine
October 9, 2024  The Ukrainian military has received Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) protective gear from the United States and NATO. 'Putin's forces have broken international law by using chemical weapons in Ukraine, and the UK is taking action with sanctions. The UK’s Ministry of Defense has already provided protective equipment and decontamination kits to boost Ukraine’s protective capabilities,' the British Ministry of Defense announced. 'Russian units have widely used riot control agents and chloropicrin, a toxic choking agent first deployed in the trenches of World War One, against Ukrainian troops'. (Source: nationalinterest)

Europe
9th October 2024  Islamic sectarianism is surging across Europe, parties are emerging that campaign on anti-Zionist, if not outright Islamist, agendas. In parts of Western Europe, voices are warning of resurgence of sectarian politics - new political parties are pushing a sinister combination of anti-Israel activism and Muslim identity politics. The FPP’s performance in the recent EU elections was relatively small and not a single candidate from any of the parties won a seat in the European Parliament. The extra-parliamentary influence of its members should not be underestimated.       A newly formed European coalition called the Free Palestine Party (FPP) is the latest attempt to mobilise voters through anti-Israel sentiment and Muslim identity politics. The FPP unveiled its platform earlier this year, in time for the 2024 EU parliamentary elections. It launched in Brussels, a city that is home to an abundance of radical Muslim organisations. Brussels serves as the base for the Belgian Muslim political party, Team Fouad Ahidar (TFA), which is also a member of the FPP coalition. In November last year, shortly after the 7 October pogrom, TFA leader, the eponymous Ahidar, downplayed the atrocities as a ‘small response from one faction of Hamas to Israel’s actions’ in Palestine. He has also referred to Jews as ‘psychopaths’ and accused Israel of committing ‘genocide’. Several Jewish organisations have filed lawsuits against him. Despite only being founded in February of this year, TFA secured an impressive 16.5 per cent of Flemish votes in the latest regional elections in June. It placed second and won three seats in the Brussels parliament. According to liberal MP Vanhengel, TFA ‘focusses heavily on Sharia’.      The French Union des Démocrates Musulmans Français (UDMF) is considered the founder of the FPP alliance and positions itself as an Islamic counterpart to traditional Christian Democratic platforms. Some party members have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, the most important and influential Islamist organisation in the world. UDMF’s involvement in pro-Gaza demonstrations, where anti-Israel and anti-Semitic slogans have been chanted, has drawn scrutiny in France.      The FPP’s party in Germany, the Alliance for Innovation and Justice (BIG), is considered an offshoot of Erdoğan’s AK Party. Wilbert, a member of BIG’s executive board, has acted as a keynote speaker at several Al-Quds Day demonstrations. These were first established in 1979 by Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini to rally the Islamic world for the ‘liberation’ of Jerusalem. BIG’s deputy chairman, Misirlioglu, is also active with Inssan and Islamic Relief Germany, two groups that have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Islamic Relief has even been banned in Israel for supporting Hamas, although in Germany it is regarded as a benign humanitarian organisation.      In the Netherlands, fellow FPP member NIDA (Arabic for ‘call’) party platform combines Islamism with woke and green ideology, calling for blasphemy laws and the right for public servants to wear religious symbols, as well as championing universal basic income and diversity. NIDA’s leader, El Ouali, is known to have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood and its Palestinian offshoot, Hamas, as well as to the Union of Turkish Democrats, a European branch of Turkey’s governing Justice and Development (AK) Party.      The Spanish FPP party, the ‘Islamic-Humanist’ Andalusi Party's manifesto frequently emphasises multiculturalism and argues that the ‘Western way’ is no longer sustainable. Its Facebook page is filled with radically anti-Israel content. In a recent interview with online magazine Hyphen, party leader  Amar said: ‘Western countries advocate a two-state solution, but we believe the state of Israel is not legitimate and should therefore not exist.’      In the United Kingdom General Election in July, around the country, a sizeable number of candidates ran on a pro-Palestinian platform. In some areas, campaigns were run on strictly religious lines, with groups like The Muslim Vote encouraging British Muslims to only use their votes on pro-Palestine candidates. The group had some big successes, with five ‘pro-Gaza independents’ now sitting in parliament – four of which managed to unseat incumbent Labour MPs.      A year after the 7 October pogrom, anti-Israel demonstrations and campus protests still persist across London, Brussels and Berlin. Tying a ‘pro-Palestine’, and even explicitly Islamist cause, with woke social-justice issues and climate change could be a winning strategy for the FPP in future. Large sections of the left are increasingly positioning themselves as defenders of radical Islam, while the political establishment is either unwilling or unable to confront the new wave of anti-Semitism. We are witnessing the early stages of something deeply sinister. (Source: spiked-online)

Hungary
11.10.2024  This year
marks the centennial of the Turkish-Hungarian Friendship Treaty, The 1923 agreement was elevated to a strategic partnership in 2013 and to an "enhanced strategic partnership" last year, encompassing cooperation across all sectors. Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Bayraktar met with Szijjártó, Hungarian minister of foreign affairs and trade, during the St. Petersburg International Gas Forum in Russia yesterday. Following the meeting, Bayraktar said on X: "We reiterated our commitment to maintaining and expanding our successful natural gas exports to Hungary in the near future." Hungary is keen to expand bilateral energy cooperation with Ankara, recognizing the crucial role Türkiye's natural gas supply plays in bolstering its energy security, Ambassador Matis, the Hungarian envoy in Ankara told. He said the bilateral agreement between Türkiye and Hungary "is a good start," referring to a 2023 deal between Turkish Petroleum Pipeline Corporation (BOTAS) and the Hungarian MVM CEEnergy company under which Ankara began exporting natural gas to Budapest. "2023-2024 have been the most active years in our energy sector over the past decade." "We are ready to continue cooperation in natural gas. This could be gas known as 'Turkish Blend' or LNG," Matis said. "Türkiye is now the most important transit route for our energy security due to the Russia-Ukraine war," he said. Highlighting a potential for cooperation in nuclear energy, Matis said that Hungary's Paks Nuclear Power Plant shares the same technical specifications as Türkiye's Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant which is currently under construction. He emphasized Hungary's extensive experience in operating nuclear power plants, expressing a willingness to share knowledge and expertise with its Turkish counterparts. The ambassador highlighted the importance of renewable energy sources, such as geothermal and solar power, for Hungary. "Turkish companies are active in Hungary's renewable energy sector and are performing exceptionally well," he said. The ambassador highlighted the significant growth in bilateral trade between Türkiye and Hungary, from $2 billion in 2013 to approximately $4.3 billion in 2023. He emphasized that reaching $6 billion in bilateral trade is merely a stepping stone. He expressed the ambition to further elevate the economic relationship, aiming to achieve a trade volume of $10 billion and strengthening the collaboration even further. New infrastructure has been established to support growth, including the launch of a Turkish public bank in Hungary and visa assistance for Turkish entrepreneurs. "We actively support Turkish companies considering investments in Hungary," he said, adding they are working closely with the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency to offer support and facilitate their entry into the Hungarian market. Poland

Poland's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sikorski, said yesterday: 'I'd like you to know Starlink units in Ukraine are not funded by Mr. Musk. 'They have been, are and will be funded exclusively by Poland. We do it, nobody else does it. And it's a factor in Ukraine being able to continue fighting.' Sikorski's statements were made on Polish news channel Polsat News. Sikorski said that Starlink is an important factor in Ukraine's defense, as the access to the internet that it supplies is secure and cannot be meddled with. Poland is spending a record amount on defense, up to $48.5 billion. Sikorski's comments counter previous Newsweek reporting, which has said that Starlink in Ukraine is supplied by a $23 million SpaceX contract with the Pentagon. A U.S. Space Force spokesperson spoke to Newsweek about these claims saying: 'The Space Force has a contract to provide Starlink services in Ukraine through November 30, 2024, for a total obligated amount of $40,610,000.00.' Newsweek has contacted the Polish government via email for comment. (Source: Newsweek - U.S.)

European Commission

floats plan to bypass Hungary's long-held veto on €6.6 billion military assistance for Ukraine. A proposed reform - still in the very early stages, - of the European Peace Facility would allow member states to make financial contributions to the EPF on a voluntary basis, rather than a mandatory one. Would it be acceptable for Budapest, as it would relieve the country from chipping into the common fund?. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has repeatedly decried the EU's provisions of military equipment as a "pro-war policy." The switch in contribution to the EPF would require the unanimous support of all 27 member states. (Source: Euronews - Headquarters Lyon, France / AP - U.S.)

Albania
11/10/2024 - 20:12 GMT+2  The centres built by the Italian government
in Albania are ready to host migrants rescued by Italian ships in the Mediterranean Sea, eleven months after the agreement between the two countries was signed. Up to 400 people will initially be transported to the coastal Albanian town of Shengjin. The entire centre of Gjadër is in fact a place of forced detention, fenced off and monitored by Italian police officers. Here, a centre ran by Italian staff has been set up. Interpreters, medicals visits and the possibility of applying for asylum are guaranteed. The main section is meant to house asylum seekers while their requests are being processed. Applications must be completed within 28 days, according to the accelerated procedure foreseen in Italian law. During this time, applicants will be able to meet lawyers and staff from international organizations. Those who are not entitled to asylum will end up in another part of the camp. If the capacity is exceeded the migrants will be transferred to Italy before being repatriated to their countries of origin. There is a prison, with a capacity of 20 places, for migrants who commit crimes. Asylum seekers who have their request accepted will be transferred to Italy with a residence permit. Those who receive a refusal will be repatriated, always at the expense and under the responsibility of Italy. Tens of millions of euros have been spent to build these structures, but the authorities are not able to quantify the overall cost of the procedures for the five-year duration of the agreement between Italy and Albania. /Photo/ (Source: Euronews - Headquarters Lyon, France)

Iran
October 11, 2024 • 11:18 am ET
Iran will need to think carefully about whether it is suitable to create another direct confrontation with Israel, which might also lead it to a direct confrontation with the United States. However, it can potentially balance the deterrence equation vis-à-vis Israel by pursuing a nuclear deal that will end the current escalation and reduce the risks of direct confrontation with Israel, creating a possible wedge between the United States and Israel and buying Iran time to think about its national security. If Iran decides to go down this path, it must consider that there will be a new US administration in January, which presumably will continue to support Israel but, on the other hand, might be interested in a deal to prevent a regional war. North Korea
October 11, 2024  What should the United States do? Given the differences in the objectives of Russia, China, and North Korea, the United States should be mounting major information operations against these three countries to highlight their differences and fuel distrust among them. Doing so would increase the likelihood of decoupling at least some of their partnerships. Some examples of potential information operations seem obvious. With China, it is important to publicly declare that China seeks dominance in Northeast Asia and beyond. The United States should call attention to how North Korea’s close cooperation with Russia defies Chinese dominance, making China unhappy. In addition, North Korea regularly threatens to use nuclear weapons, which could ignite a nuclear war in the region. This is likely why Chinese leader Xi has said that he will not permit war or chaos on the Korean Peninsula. Information operations could sensitize the Chinese leaders and people to these threats, inducing China to pressure North Korea to rein in its nuclear weapon production, its provocations, and its threats to use nuclear weapons. Information operations are also possible against Russia and North Korea. For example, media stories could tell the Russian people that North Korea has sent a significant number of dilapidated artillery and other munitions to Russia that have been causing Russian casualties. While the North Korean elites have likely been reassured by the food and economic resources that Russia has been providing, the media could explain that North Korea has been apparently exhausting its available munitions supplies such that Russian payments to North Korea will likely be declining significantly in the coming year. In addition, the United States should recognize that North Korean military advisors are supporting Russian use of North Korean military supplies in occupied areas of Ukraine. The North Korean regime has likely only sent elite North Korean personnel to perform such functions, fearing that other North Koreans would probably defect to the West. It has been reported that six officers from this group were killed in Russian-occupied areas of Ukraine, a message that will likely anger their families in Pyongyang and thus should also be broadcast into North Korea. The South Korean Defense Minister has said that North Korea will likely send more of its troops to support Russia, probably on the battlefield. Given Russian attitudes, those troops may well serve as cannon fodder. The North Korean elites need to hear what Kim may do to their sons. Also, North Korean military life supporting the Russian military in captured Ukrainian territory is likely not very good. Russian treatment may make many of those North Korean soldiers receptive to psychological operations against the North Korean regime, an opportunity that should not be missed. This new cooperation between Russia and North Korea is hardly a signal of a budding long-term alliance and U.S. information campaigns could help speed its demise. Turkey
October 11, 2024 at 4:15 pm  Recently, Turkiye has shown willingness to be part of BRICS, a second plea for inclusion in Sino-Russian forums. The first was made a few months ago, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) annual meet-up. Ankara became the first NATO ally to bid for BRICS and the bloc is expected to assess the request in its October summit in Russia. BRICS would significantly jeopardise Ankara’s current role in NATO and it could lose its membership in the transatlantic alliance, as Turkiye would slide from being an ally to a threat for NATO. 10/11/2024 7:29 PM   Milley, a decorated military officer became a target for right-wing scorn after it became known that he expressed concerns over Trump’s mental stability in the wake of his 2020 election loss to Biden. He is described by journalist Woodward in his new book, 'War', with October 15 release date, as incredibly alarmed at the prospect of a second Trump term in the White House. In the wake of the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol, Woodward writes, Milley insisted on securing a meeting with the then-newly-minted attorney general, Garland, to urge him to investigate domestic violent extremism and 'far-right' militia movements. Milley’s sit-down with Garland might have been the first-ever meeting between a chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the country’s top civilian law enforcement official. Milley, the US Army general who Trump appointed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in 2019, had been a source for Woodward’s last book, 'Peril'. At a March 2023 meeting at the Willard Hotel in Washington, DC he told the journalist that 'no one has ever been as dangerous to this country' as the former president. The general’s private comments to Woodward, which have not been previously reported, were echoed in cutting remarks Milley made publicly at his September 2023 retirement ceremony. In the speech, he said the US military is 'unique' among the world’s fighting forces because it does not profess fealty to any one person. Apparently referencing Trump, he added: “And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator! (Source: msn / The Independent - United Kingdom)

NATO

Steadfast Noon will last two weeks, they will involve fighters capable of carrying American nuclear warheads, but combat weapons will not be used. This is an important test of the alliance's nuclear deterrence, according to Alliance Secretary General Rutte. Steadfast Noon employs 2,000 military personnel from 8 air bases and various types of aircraft, including nuclear-armed aircraft, bombers, escort fighters, tanker aircraft and aircraft capable of conducting reconnaissance and electronic warfare.
