December 3, 2018 The Central European University, founded by billionaire Soros, said it had been forced out of Hungary in “an arbitrary eviction” that violated academic freedom, and it confirmed plans to open a new campus in Austria. For nearly three decades CEU has been a gateway to the West for thousands of students from ex-communist eastern Europe, offering U.S.-accredited degree programs in an academic climate that celebrates free thought. Earlier this year, Open Society Foundations, Soros’ main funding network, was also forced to leave Hungary. CEU said it would start enrolling students for U.S. degrees at its new campus in Vienna for the next academic year. Students already enrolled will complete their studies in Budapest. The university retains accreditation as a Hungarian university and will seek to continue teaching and research activity in Budapest as long as possible. (Source: Reuters)

2018. XII. 7. A történelmi Erdély, a Partium és a Bánság legfőbb városai összefognak, és megalakítják a Nyugat Szövetségét. A hírt néhány héttel ezelőtt jelentette be Kolozsvár, Arad, Nagyvárad és Temesvár elöljárósága. Holnap Temesváron aláírják az együttműködési szerződést, és hivatalossá teszik a szövetség működését. A négy város mindegyike élén a Nemzeti Liberális Párt (PNL) polgármestere áll: Robu, Boc, Bolojan és Falcă. A szövetség bármelyik önkormányzat számára nyitott. A kezdeményezés arra irányul, hogy a városok megosszák egymással értékes gazdasági, műszaki, szervezési ismereteiket és tapasztalataikat (a know howt), kapcsolják össze az egyes városokat gyorsforgalmi utakkal, ugyanakkor a kultúra, az oktatás, az egészségügy, a sport vagy a turizmus révén is - írja közlemény. 2018. XII. 6. Kárpát-medencei Magyar Autonómiatanács, az Erdélyi Magyar Nemzeti Tanács és a Buza László Egyesület a Nemzetközi és Regionális Kapcsolatokért a kolozsvári Vallásszabadság Házában szervezte meg az 1918. Impériumváltás, önrendelkezés, nemzetépítés elnevezésű konferenciát. Az esemény nyitómozzanataként levetítésre került az a háromperces kisfilm, melyet Janovics kolozsvári filmstúdiója készített az 1918. december 22-én tartott kolozsvári nemzetgyűlésről, amelyen - válaszként a gyulafehérvári román nemzetgyűlésre - az erdélyi magyarok több tízezres tömege kinyilvánította, hogy „Magyarországgal egyazon népköztársasági állami közösségben kívánnak élni, és az egységes és csonkítatlan Magyarország keretein belül követelik minden itt lakó nemzet számára a teljes egyenlőséget, szabadságot és önkormányzatot”. December 8, 2017. Belgian police fired tear gas and water cannons at yellow-vested protesters calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Charles Michel after they tried to breach a riot barricade, as the movement that started in France made its mark Saturday in Belgium and the Netherlands. Protesters in Brussels threw paving stones, road signs, fireworks, flares and other objects at police blocking their entry to an area where Michel’s offices, other government buildings and the parliament are located. About 100 were detained. The reasons for the protests are not entirely clear. (Source: AP)

2 December 2018 They will not be imprisoned. Foreign criminals sentenced to deportation are to be banished to a remote island off the coast of Denmark. The Lindholm facility will house rejected asylum seekers who have been convicted of crimes, as well as foreign citizens who do not have permission to stay but cannot be deported for legal reasons. For example, some of those due to be detained at the facility are stateless, while others come from countries which do not have a readmission agreement with Denmark. There are already two detention centres in Denmark for criminals and failed asylum seekers: Kærshovedgård and Sjælsmark. Though nearly 87 per cent of the country's population is of Danish descent. December 8, 2018 An estimated 138,000 people took part in the protest across France of which 10,000 were in Paris. More than 89,000 officers were deployed to maintain order, including 8,000 in Paris. Police arrested 1,700 people nationwide and held 1,200 in custody after containing several late night skirmishes today. About 179 people were hurt as extreme-right, extreme-left and anarchist elements defied riot forces in Paris where at least 920 were arrested with as many as 620 in custody. Many arrests were carried out early Saturday as police conducted searches ahead of the protests, seeking to prevent rioting. There were also clashes with police in Bordeaux, which continued into the evening, and in Toulouse along with roadblocks on highways including those near Lyon, Clermont-Ferrand and Albertville. Prime Minister Philippe called for dialog with the so-called Yellow Vests and said Macron would propose new measures this coming week “to restore national unity.” (Source: Bloomberg)
8 December 2018 Anti-government protesters faced off with French riot police in Paris today, hurling projectiles, torching cars and vandalising shops and restaurants in a fourth weekend of unrest that has shaken President Macron's authority. Police used tear gas, water cannon and horses to charge protesters on roads fanning out from the Champs Elysees boulevard. Interior Minister Castaner said there had been about 10,000 protesters in Paris by early evening and some 125,000 across the country. Bordeaux, Lyon, Toulouse and other cities also saw major clashes between protesters and police. Groups of youths, many of them masked, continued skirmishing with police in the Place de la Republique area as some stores were looted. Retailers have lost an estimated one billion euros in revenue since the protests erupted and shares in tourism-related shares saw their worst week in months. Protesters want Macron to go further to help hard-pressed households, including an increase to the minimum wage, lower taxes, higher salaries, cheaper energy, better retirement benefits and even Macron's resignation. Friday, December 7, 2018 You can’t make speeches about defending the international order when your popularity is at 20 percent and there are protesters in the street. France's image has taken a terrible blow. Less than a month ago, French President Macron staked his claim as the flag-bearer for globalism. In a speech to 60 world leaders at the Arc de Triomphe, he eulogized the United Nations and declared nationalism the “betrayal” of patriotism. Then came the “Yellow Vests.” The grassroots protest movement was sparked by opposition to his environmental policy of hiking taxes on diesel and gasoline to fund incentives to buy cleaner cars and home housing systems. But it’s evolved into widespread anger about the rising cost of living and declining services in rural and small-town France. Last Saturday, tear gas and cobblestones flew in the same part of Paris as protesters trashed the iconic monument and demanded Macron’s embattled government withdraw a proposed fuel-tax increase. For the first time in his presidency, he backed down. The retreat by the 40-year-old French leader was mocked by Trump. The protesters’ demands have expanded. Some want to restore the wealth tax, increasing pensions, raising the minimum wage, cutting the salaries of politicians, and even to Macron resigning and replacing the National Assembly with a “people’s council.” Polls show three-quarters of the French support their demands. Europe has seen many a critical juncture in recent years, from the Greek debt crisis to the anti-immigrant backlash against refugees and Britain’s Brexit vote. Poland is flirting with the far right and nationalist parties cajoled by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán are plotting a rebellion at European Parliamentary elections in May. Meanwhile, Italy has collided with the European Union by taking a defiant stand on its budget spending. Merkel, wounded in German elections in September 2017 was formally replaced on Friday as the head of her party by Kramp-Karrenbauer, albeit an ally whose presence boosts the likelihood Merkel will see out her final term. With the EU’s erstwhile firefighter, Angela Merkel, planning to step down as German chancellor, the baton was supposed to pass to Macron to uphold liberal democracy. But the French leader looks anything but solid. It’s very difficult to get his credibility back. The images televised around the world last weekend were of burning cars in the French capital. Macron admitted, via his prime minister, that he’s not been able to connect with the French people. His policies are seen to favor the wealthy, and poll after poll have shown the French electorate thinks the former banker is aloof and arrogant. His approval rating is at 28 percent, according to an average of seven polling institutes. French opposition parties will file a joint no-confidence motion against the government on Monday. Macron emerges extremely weakened and isolated, both at home and in Europe. The European Parliament elections will likely be interpreted as a ‘midterm vote’ on the presidency. (Source: Bloomberg)
December 7, 2018 “Forgotten France” After the Dec. 1 riots in central Paris and sometimes violent demonstrations in dozens of other cities and towns across France, the government offered a rush of sweeteners to soothe public anger. It started by scrapping next year’s planned hikes to fuel taxes, the first major U-turn of Macron’s presidency and costing the Treasury 4 billion euros. But protesters want Macron to go further to help hard-pressed households, including an increase to the minimum wage, lower taxes, higher salaries, cheaper energy, better retirement provisions and even Macron’s resignation. But, mindful of France’s deficit and not wanting to flout EU rules, Macron will have scant wriggle room for more concessions. The “gilets jaunes” (yellow vest) movement remains amorphous and hard to define, with a rapidly shifting agenda and internal divisions. The Eiffel Tower, opera house, and Louvre are among dozens of museums and tourist sites in Paris that will close on Saturday to pre-empt feared attacks by yellow vest militants. Luxury boutiques and restaurants in fancy neighborhoods and near the presidential palace erected barricades and boarded up windows. Department stores Galerie Lafayette and Printemps said they would not open in the capital on Saturday. The trouble is jeopardizing a timid economic recovery in France just as the Christmas holiday season kicks off. Retailers have lost about 1 billion euros in revenue since the protests erupted. 6 Dec 2018 Elysee Palace is worried about a possible coup attempt. Calls have been made to attack parliamentarians and police forces. Even though the French government abandoned the fuel tax hike after sweeping protests, the movement still calls upon its followers to gather on December 8. “The Act IV” will be held under the motto “we stay on our course.” The Facebook event has already counted 6,000 people who wish to participate and 22,000 others who are “interested.” Drouet one of the movement's most famous leaders announced the Yellow Vests plans to approach the residence of Macron. “Saturday will be the final outcome, Saturday is the Elysee, we all would like to go to the Elysee,” he said. The intelligence services have reported to the Elysee Palace, the official residence of the president, that there have been “calls to kill” and “carry arms to attack” parliamentarians, government officials and police officers. 1 December 2018 Paris rioters steal police assault rifle, torch dozens of cars and vow to 'stay in the streets until Christmas' as fuel protests continue into the night and spread across France. Yellow Vest' supporters staged fresh protests on the Champs-Elysees which leads to the Arc de Triomphe. Dozens of cars were torched, the Arc de Triomphe was graffitied and shops and houses were ransacked. 7th December 2018 Hundreds of demonstrators marched through Athens in tribute to 15-year-old Grigoropoulos, who was gunned down by officers in 2008. Rioters torched cars and hurled flares at cops. December 5, 2018 The New Cold War sure looks a lot like the Old Cold War. Latest Russian laser weapons system, the Peresvet entered in combat service in a testing regime with the Russian armed forces just a day after the U.S. said it would likely pull out of a key arms treaty between the two countries. The INF Treaty bans the deployment of new intermediate-range nuclear weapons with a range between 500km and 5,500km the kind of high-powered missiles that would pose a threat to Russia if placed in nearby European countries like Poland and Romania. In July the military first unveiled video of the device. "If the INF treaty is destroyed, we won’t leave it without a response,” General Staff chief Gerasimov said ."The target for Russian retaliation won’t be U.S. territory but the countries where the intermediate-range missiles are deployed." “Many other countries - about a dozen of them, probably - produce such weapons [in breach of the INF treaty], and Russia and the United States have limited themselves bilaterally,” President Putin said. 2018. XII. 10. Hétévnyi huzavona után az idén novemberre elkészült a valaha volt leglátványosabb szerb történelmi nagyjátékfilm, az I. Péter király című alkotás. A film producere szerint a 110 napig tartó szerbiai és görögországi forgatáson száz színész és több ezer statiszta vett részt. Ami viszont magyar szempontból érdekes: a valaha volt legdrágább szerb filmet Vucsics szerb elnök hathatós segítsége mellett közadakozásból dobták össze. Úgy, hogy a giga-produkcióban sehol sincsenek lelkes német, tót és „héber pattantyúsok”, hanem csak a szerb múlt, az ő dicsőségük. Ennyi a magyar tanulsága a szerbek filmjének. (Forrás: MagyarIdők)

December 10, 2018 Nine out of ten Jews living in nations which have been their home for centuries feel that anti-Semitism has worsened over the past five years. 79 percent of those who experienced harassment said they did not report the incidents to authorities. Feelings of insecurity were particularly acute among Jews in France, followed by Poland, Belgium and Germany. Dec 1, 2018 A leading MEP has warned EU citizens they could be “jailed” for criticising migration policies if a new United Nations agreement is acted upon. The United Nations Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration seeks to make immigration a universal human right. On the 10th and 11th of December there will be an international congress in Marrakesh Morocco. The participating countries are set to sign this agreement. One basic element of this new agreement is the extension of the definition of hate speech. “The agreement wants to criminalise migration speech. Criticism of migration will become a criminal offence. “Media outlets that give room to criticism of migration can be shut down. “The compact for migration is legalisation of mass migration - MEP de Graaff said. “It is declaring migration as a human right so it will, in effect, become impossible to criticise Mrs Merkel’s welcome migrants politics without being at risk of being jailed for hate speech.” Austria, Australia, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Israel, Poland, Slovakia and Switzerland have already stated they will not sign the agreement.
