October 14, 2019 Russia’s military will this week undertake a drill of its strategic nuclear forces. The three-day exercise will begin tomorrow and involve 12,000 troops, 213 missile launchers, 105 aircraft, 15 surface warships and five submarines. The war games will feature practice launches of missiles; two intercontinental ballistic missiles will be launched at practice targets on the Kura testing range on the Kamchatka Peninsula. 10. 15. 19. A few hours before Secretary of State Pompeo met with his Vatican counterpart Parolin in Rome in early October, the Swiss Guard gendarmes raided a key office in Parolin’s department. They were acting on orders from “up high,” and cleaned out the offices of the Holy See’s Financial Information Authority (AIF), which is essentially meant to be the watchdog agency set up to keep an eye out for any illicit activities at the Vatican Bank, which has been embroiled in dozens of scandals over the years. The gendarmes carted away computers, documents, and as many secret hard drives as they could find. The latest scandal within the Vatican’s beleaguered financial system touched Pope Francis personally with allegations that money meant for his beloved charities for the poor was actually going into pricey London property and seedy apartments alleged to be used for sinful activities. This latest scandal leads to the U.K., but so far at least no one has been killed. In London the Vatican controls a former warehouse for Harrods on Sloane Ave. through British Grolux Investments Ltd. - which is run by the Vatican's Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See (APSA). Apparently, around $400 million that was earmarked for the pope’s charity fundraiser Peter’s Pence went to pay off the mortgage of private apartments in the warehouse. The property now houses about 100 apartments, some of which are frequented by priests and other clergy as a sort of lurid London getaway. There have been reports in the Italian press of gay brothels where priests meet up with young men, and on rarer occasions, young women. Just days after his gendarmes raided the AIF offices, Francis assigned anti-Mafia prosecutor Pignatone to head the Vatican court assigned to get to the bottom of the Vatican Bank’s alleged charity theft. Tapping an outsider like Pignatone marks a change in strategy and sends a clear message that the pontiff doesn’t exactly trust the usual gatekeepers. The first case Pignatone will preside over is the trial of Caloia, the former Vatican Bank president who is accused of embezzling millions off Vatican property deals. In 2014, Francis created the first ever Secretariat for the Economy to try to unravel the mess. But the first head of that department was Cardinal Pell, now appealing a child sex abuse conviction in Australia. Oct 16, 2019 The United States carried out a secret cyber operation against Iran in the wake of the Sept. 14 attacks on Saudi Arabia's oil facilities, which Washington and Riyadh blame on Tehran. The operation took place in late September and took aim at Tehran's ability to spread "propaganda." The strike affected physical hardware. Iran has used such tactics against the United States. This month, a hacking group that appears linked to the Iranian government tried to infiltrate email accounts related Trump's re-election campaign. Over 30 days in August and September, the group, which Microsoft dubbed "Phosphorous," made more than 2,700 attempts to identify consumer accounts, then attacked 241 of them. (Source: Reuters)

Heavy downpours and strong winds pounded the capital as the typhoon hit the south coast today. Around 7.3 million people have been told to evacuate as two were killed and more than 30 were injured. 20 inches of rain is forecast for Tokyo area in next 24 hours. October 15, 2019 Syrian government forces entered the center of Manbij, a flashpoint where U.S. troops had previously conducted joint patrols with Turkey. Syrian forces had taken control of an area of more than 1,000 square km around Manbij, including Tabqa military airfield. The Syrian army deployments into Kurdish-held territory amount to a victory for Assad and Russia, giving them a foothold in the biggest remaining swathe of Syria that had been beyond their grasp through much of its eight-year-old war. After Trump announced a set of sanctions on yesterday to punish Ankara, U.S. prosecutors hit Turkey with charges on the majority state-owned Halkbank for taking part in a multibillion-dollar scheme to evade U.S. sanctions against Iran. Turkish and American officials had been in talks on the Halkbank case for at least a year. The measures announced yesterday - mainly a hike in steel tariffs and a pause in trade talks - were less robust than financial markets had anticipated, and Trump’s critics derided them as too feeble to have an impact. The Turkish lira, which had fallen on the expectation of tougher U.S. measures, recovered after the sanctions were announced, as did its bond and stock markets, with traders noting that Trump had spared Turkish banks. German carmaker Volkswagen said it was postponing a final decision on whether to build a 1 billion euro plant in Turkey, citing concern over “current developments”. The U.N. Human Rights office said today that Turkey could be held responsible for war crimes by fighters under its direction, potentially including the assassination of Khalaf, a leading Kurdish politician killed on the side of a highway day before yesterday by gunmen who posted the attack on the internet. October 14, 2019 A turning point in Syria’s eight-year civil war. Syrian government troops moved into towns and villages in northern Syria today, setting up a potential clash with Turkish-led forces advancing in the area. In the past five days, Turkish troops and their allies have pushed into northern towns and villages, clashing with the Kurdish fighters over a stretch of 200 kilometers. The offensive has displaced at least 130,000 people. Troops moved into the towns of Tal Tamr, about 20 kilometers from the Turkish border, Ein Issa and Tabqa, known for its dam on the Euphrates River and a nearby air base of the same name. The government deployment sets up a potential clash between Turkey and Syria. Erdogan signaled his military was ready to launch an assault on the Kurdish-held region of Manbij, on the western flank of the Euphrates adding that Turkey aimed to return the city to Arab populations that he said were its rightful owners. Syrian troops already have a presence south of Manbij. Heavy fighting there yesterday reached a Kurdish-run camp for displaced persons in Ein Issa. The camp is home to about 12,000 people, including around 950 wives and children of is fighters, and hundreds are believed to have escaped amid the chaos. Several vehicles and a small number of troops are in Tal Tamr, a predominantly Assyrian Christian town was once held by is before it was retaken by Kurdish-led forces. October 13, 2019 U.S. Defense Secretary Esper said the U.S. has come to believe that the Kurds are attempting to “cut a deal” with the Syrian army and Russia to counter the invading Turks. Shortly afterward, Kurdish officials announced they will work with the Syrian government to fend off the Turkish invasion, deploying side by side along the border. October 18, 2019 Some American arms control experts say the U.S. bombs at Incirlik would be safer in another NATO member country. Turkey, a NATO ally, has reportedly hosted American nuclear weapons for 60 years. There are up to 50 B-61 bombs designed to be dropped by U.S. fighter aircraft. The bombs in Turkey are part of a network of roughly 150 U.S. air-delivered nuclear weapons based in Europe. October 14, 2019 Trump followed his gut on Syria. Calamity came fast. Over the weekend, State and Energy Department officials were quietly reviewing plans for evacuating roughly 50 tactical nuclear weapons that the United States had long stored, under American control, at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, about 250 miles from the Syrian border. Those weapons were now essentially Erdogan’s hostages. To fly them out of Incirlik would be to mark the de facto end of the Turkish-American alliance. October 18, 2019 “We’ve taken control of the oil in the Middle East,” President Trump claimed today afternoon, in response to criticism over his handling of US troop movements out of Syria. The President did not elaborate on what he meant by “securing the oil,” but speculations about the President’s statement assume he is referring to US special forces that have been - and will continue to be - in control of oil and gas fields in Deir Ezzor. The Syrian state has long argued that the oil and gas assets should be returned to it. Pre-war, Syria was producing 387,000 barrels of oil per day, 140,000 barrels per day which were exported. October 15, 2019 Former Trump Russia adviser Hill testifies for 10 hours in impeachment probe. Former national security adviser Bolton wanted no part of what he derided as the White House's "drug deal" to pressure Ukraine into investigating Democratic presidential candidate Biden, the former White House official told congressional investigators yesterday. Bolton told for Hill, he wasn't part of "whatever drug deal Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union and acting White House chief of staff Mulvaney are cooking up." Hill told lawmakers that Giuliani's role circumvented the normal national security processes and procedures for forming foreign policy. She confronted Sondland about what she considered the rogue foreign policy he was instituting in Ukraine, which is not part of the EU and therefore not normally under the ambassador to the EU's purview. Bolton’s name surfaced yesterday before House impeachment inquiry committees, when Hill reportedly testified that he told her to alert the chief lawyer for the National Security Council that Giuliani was working with Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, on an operation with legal implications. “I am not part of whatever drug deal Rudy and Mulvaney are cooking up,” Bolton told Hill to tell White House lawyers. October 13th, 2019 One country after another has been taking steps to divest themselves of their U.S. dollar. A global gold rush is imminent. China launched its yuan-denominated oil futures contracts last year, and now they’re sweetening the pot by offering swap facilities to local countries to promote the use of the yuan. Last year the European Union had plans to switch payments from the U.S. dollar to the euro for its oil purchases from Iran. India recently made its own move towards independence from dollar dominance when it was announced that a contract between Moscow and New Delhi for supplies of Russian S-400 air defense systems would be settled in rubles. Russia has taken a number of measures to reduce its dependence on the U.S. dollar, including cutting its U.S. bond holdings down to $14.4 billion from $96.1 billion in September. (Source: SHTFplan)

October 10, 2019 On July 30, 1976, the Labeled Release (LR) life detection experiment on NASA’s spectacular Viking mission to Mars returned its initial results from Mars. Amazingly, they were positive. As the experiment progressed, a total of four positive results, supported by five varied controls, streamed down from the twin Viking spacecraft landed some 4,000 miles apart. The data curves signaled the detection of microbial respiration on the Red Planet. The curves from Mars were similar to those produced by LR tests of soils on Earth. It seemed we had answered that ultimate question. When the Viking Molecular Analysis Experiment failed to detect organic matter, the essence of life, however, NASA concluded that the LR had found a substance mimicking life, but not life. Our nation has now committed to sending astronauts to Mars. Any life there might threaten them, and us upon their return. Surface water sufficient to sustain microorganisms was found on Mars by Viking, Pathfinder, Phoenix and Curiosity. Complex organics, have been reported on Mars by Curiosity’s scientists, possibly including kerogen, which could be of biological origin. The excess of carbon-13 over carbon-12 in the Martian atmosphere is indicative of biological activity. Ghost-like moving lights, resembling will-O’-the-wisps on Earth that are formed by spontaneous ignition of methane, have been video-recorded on the Martian surface. Six-channel spectral analyses by Viking’s imaging system found terrestrial lichen and green patches on Mars rocks to have the identical color, saturation, hue and intensity.
