2018. V. 26. Szász filmrendező régóta küzd a náci Fidesz ellen. 2015-ben a migránsok befogadását követeli temérdek interjúban. 2017 tavaszán a migránsok védőszentjének, Soros érdekeltségeinek a védelmére kelt. Szász a zsenijét most új területen tudja megmutatni, éppen darabot rendez a náci Magyarország Nemzeti Színházában. Vajon kaphat-e ilyen filmre a rasszista magyaroktól támogatást Bogdán? Könyvet is írt, amit most vittek színpadra. „Közvetlen a lincselés után elhangzik a Kossuth-nóta, az a dal, amit például a választás éjszakáján együtt énekelt sokakkal együtt a miniszterelnök és a szövetségese. Helyén van ön szerint ez a darabban?” – kérdezi a lap újságírója. May 29, 2018 A surging dollar and a capital flight from emerging markets may lead to another 'major' financial crisis, investor Soros said, warning the European Union that it’s facing an imminent existential threat. The 'termination' of the nuclear deal with Iran and the 'destruction' of the transatlantic alliance between the EU and the U.S. are 'bound to have a negative effect on the European economy and cause other dislocations,' including a devaluing of emerging-market currencies, Soros said in a speech in Paris. The stark warning from the billionaire money manager comes as Italian bond yields have jumped to multi-year highs and major emerging economies including Turkey and Argentina are struggling to contain the fallout from runaway inflation. Soros, who has been the object of ire by the government of his native Hungary, saved his gloomiest outlook for the EU. Soros’s proposed remedy for some of the ills facing Europe is an EU-funded Marshall Plan for Africa, worth about 30 billion euros a year, which would ease migratory pressures to the continent. He also proposed a radical transformation of the EU, including the abandonment of the clause forcing its member states to join the single currency. (Source: Bloomberg)

May 31, 2018 Debt crises and trade wars are a toxic combination. The Italian populists - much like America's - are promising a budget-busting economic fantasy if elected, including a universal minimum income guaranteed to all citizens and a flat income tax. Such a large dose of debt-financed fiscal stimulus, Goldman Sachs warns, threatens the nation's debt rating, the nation's banking system, support from the European Central Bank, and "could eventually call into question Italy's participation in the euro area [with] possible spillovers to other countries." May 29, 2018 Faith in the single currency trumps democracy? The message to voters would be poisonous: Your votes are appreciated, but your political class answers to a higher electorate of investors and bondholders. There is no guarantee that voters won’t return the same coalition to power in a do-over. As the Italian example makes clear, it is more often liberals who short-circuit the democratic process when it doesn’t go their way. Italian President Mattarella barred a coalition of euroskeptic parties from forming a government despite a clear mandate handed down by voters earlier this spring. The move amounted to nothing less than a bloodless coup d’état and laid bare the naked contempt for the vox populi among the Italian and European liberal establishment. Talk about liberalism without democracy. The populist Five Star Movement (M5S) won the largest single share of ballots in March’s general election, followed by the hard-right League led by Salvini. Founded by a comedian, the M5S blends whimsical environmentalism–zero fossil fuels by 2050!–with hard-line anti-immigration and euroskeptic policies. The League, meanwhile, is a more conventional right-wing nationalist party in the mold of the National Front in France. Yet Mattarella blocked M5S and the League from carrying out voters’ will, ostensibly over the coalition’s choice of economy minister, Savona, a former Bank of Italy official who has called for a “plan B to get out of the euro if necessary.” Savona has also compared German domination of the European Union with the Nazi occupation - an ahistorical and, indeed, vile remark, to be sure, but reason enough to undo the results of a general election? Mattarella thought so. “'the uncertainty about our position in the euro has alarmed Italian and foreign investors,' the president told reporters in justifying his move. (Source: Commentary)

2018. V. 29. (hvg)

5/29/18 Political shifts will send shockwaves of a magnitude that’s impossible to predict, but not hard to imagine. Italy, the third-largest EU power once Britain leaves, may sooner or later be run by two parties who agree on little other than their apparent eagerness to break stuff. It could be Italy’s debt - a default in the trillions of euros. It could be the euro, if they follow through on past promises to hold a referendum on membership in the single currency. And what’s ultimately broken could be the EU as we know it, if any such referendum goes against Brussels, as most that have been held have done. Transatlantic troubles have added another heavy stone to a growing sense of Brussels dread. Dismissed with some glee on much of the Continent as an Ugly American vulgarian and ineffectual to boot, Trump is turning out to be a more serious foe than the European establishment expected. He tore up Europe’s beloved Paris climate agreement and the Iran nuclear deal, the prides of EU diplomacy, and is flexing America’s trade muscles too. Not only can the EU do little about any of it, the contretemps has brought home the painful reality of Europe’s weakness: its dependence on the U.S. for security and for commerce. The G7 and NATO summits, coming in quick succession this summer, are unlikely to improve Euro-spirits about transatlantic relations. But amid Trump’s threats to slap tariffs on steel and cars, a long-shot win for Europe is a potential alliance with the U.S. to press China on trade. Brussels not-so-secretly desires one, but finds itself dealing with an American president who doesn’t wish to do it any favors. (Source: Politico)

Vatican
5/28/18 Celebrated by progressives around the world for his push to update and liberalize aspects of church doctrine, Francis is facing fierce blowback from traditionalists who take issue with his openness to Muslim migrants, his concern for the environment and his softer tone on divorce, cohabitation and homosexuality. Opposition has become so heated that some advisers are warning him to tread carefully to avoid a “schism” in the church. Last fall, more than 200 scholars and priests signed a letter accusing Francis of spreading heresy. Francis is also under fire from the Vatican’s civil service, known as the Roman Curia. On becoming Pope, Francis set a new tone by setting up his headquarters in a humble guesthouse for priests rather than the grand apostolic palace - a gesture of humility that carried with it an implied criticism of past excesses. He also did away with the system of automatically giving a cardinal’s hat to bishops in certain posts. In 2015, Francis ordered every parish to host two refugee families. And last week, in his most explicit acceptance of homosexuality yet, he told a gay Catholic that God had made him that way and that his sexuality “does not matter.” The focus of most traditionalist dissent has been Francis’ Amoris Laetitia, an “apostolic exhortation” - a type of papal communication - in which he called for a “merciful” approach to divorcees and opened the door for those living with new partners to take communion with their priest’s permission. Francis is effectively undermining the church’s authority and reducing the role of priests to that of companion and advisers to their parishioners - a thorny issue that dates back to the Vatican II reforms of the 1960s. At a conference on “the limits of papal authority” in Rome last month, Cardinal Burke, one of the key figures leading the charge against Francis, reminded the audience the pope’s power is not “magical.” If a pope has “deviated from the faith” he “must as a duty, be disobeyed.” Francis appears to be under siege. Figures close to the pope have been linked to a series of scandals, which, some claim, are intended to discredit Francis and make his regime look as chaotic and dysfunctional as his predecessor’s. The most frequent targets are those charged with tackling the Vatican’s murky finances. But many describe him as a canny political operator “by stealth and cunning.” A pope’s real power lies in his mandate to appoint the cardinals who will vote in his successor. In June, he will hand out 14 new red hats, including three to key collaborators. At that point he will have selected 47 percent of the 125 voter-cardinals eligible to choose his successor, just shy of a majority. (Source: Politico): https://tinyurl.com/y97q6czl

24th May 2018 Ebola patients who fled from quarantine went to a prayer meeting with 50 other people before they died. Ebola patients are reportedly relying on spiritual cures rather than trusting advice of doctors. The Ebola virus spreads through direct contact with either bodily fluids or objects contaminated by someone ill with the disease. Some people are refusing medical care and turning to preachers and prayers to chase away the threat. Pastors at churches have been encouraging people "pray away" the Ebola instead of receiving vaccines. Ebola is also believed to be a "curse on those who ate stolen meat". Radio broadcasts have also been telling Congo residents that the disease is "incurable" due to "witchcraft". The spread in the city could mean a repeat of the 2014 outbreak – which killed over 11,000. Controlling a virus once it has reached a large urban area is particularly challenging. (Source: DailyStar)

Today Abramovich flew into Tel Aviv and received an Israeli identity card under the Law of Return, which allows Jews to become citizens of Israel. The Law of Return, which dates back to 1950, is a law giving Jews the right to go and live in Israel, and to gain Israeli citizenship – in 1970, this rule was extended to include people with one Jewish grandparent, and a person who is married to a Jew. 'He was issued a certificate of a new repatriate (Teudat Oleh) and an identity card (Teudat Zehut),' reported Vesty. He then went 'to open a bank account and arrange medical insurance'. 'In total, Abramovich spent about three hours in Israel,' stated the report. 'He then flew away on his plane, the direction unspecified.' Israel grants citizenship to any Jew wishing to move there, and a passport can be issued immediately. Israeli passport holders can enter Britain without a visa for short stays, although they require visas to work there. (Source: DailyMail)

05/31/18 American health-care workers are committing suicide in unprecedented numbers. Why physicians and health-care workers are more likely to complete suicide is unknown. It perhaps has to do with a work-related mental health syndrome called disengagement and burnout, which has reached epidemic proportions in health-care providers and nurses. Excessive pressures and expectations at work, paired with seemingly unattainable goals for quality and productivity as well as societal loss of trust in physicians, has led to a loss of meaning of work and of self for physicians. This is not the norm that physicians or nurses expected when we answered the call to be care-providers. (Source: TheHill): https://tinyurl.com/y8wor35w
May 28, 2018 Lava engulfed the heads of two wells that tap into steam and gas deep in the Earth’s core at the 38-megawatt Puna Geothermal Venture. Its operator, Israeli-controlled Ormat Technologies Inc, said it had not been able to assess the damage. Hawaii’s erupting Kilauea volcano's fresh blast of lava from the crater sent an ash plume almost 4,600 m into the sky and threatened to cover more wells. Residents fear the wells may be explosive and fear an explosive emission of deadly hydrogen sulfide and other gases should wells be ruptured. Authorities have shut down the plant, removed 230,000 liters of flammable liquid, and deactivated the wells. Magma has drained from Kilauea’s summit lava lake and flowed around 25 miles (40 km) east underground, bursting out of about two dozen giant cracks or fissures. (Source: Reuters)

May 30th 2018 Sex on Mars is going to be risky, but it could create a new human subspecies. The first and most obvious hurdle is the low gravity environment - just one-third the gravity of Earth -, which could pose a serious threat to the conception and pregnancy processes that seem so simple here on Earth. We don’t even know if a human mother could carry a child to full term without something going wrong. Lower gravity causes muscles to deteriorate rapidly and can even weaken bone structure. On top of that, astronauts sometimes experience vision problems and even changes to the shape of their brains. Editing the genes of future Mars babies might be an easy way to increase the prospects of survival but as generations pass it would also result in a new kind of human - one who is fine on Mars but could never live a normal life here on Earth.
