2017. VIII. 20.

Nagy-Britannia
2017. VIII. 12. Ha Nolan történetileg hiteles filmet akart volna készíteni, akkor a charleville-i német főhadiszálláson történteket is be kellett volna mutatnia, amennyire lehetséges. A német páncélosok megállíthatatlanok voltak, a város körüli védelmi zóna egyre kisebb lett. 1940. május 24-én azonban, még a Charleville-ben tartott helyzetértékelés idején Hitler kiadta a 13-as számú utasítását, amelyben elrendelte a német páncélosok megállítását. Nolan valószínűleg nem olvasta Hart könyvét, a The Other Side of the Hillt, amely 1948-ban jelent meg. (Forrás: MagyarNemzet)

Romania
(August 2017) After the First World War Transylvania became part of Romania. Soon the state authorities begun a forced Romanization, and as part of that process a substantial part of the properties of the traditional Hungarian Churches was confiscated. The process was as unclear as possible, beginning with laws listing properties that were taken in the property of the state and ending with forced “donations”. After 1989, Romania committed herself to restitute all the properties taken away abusively, but that process in the case of the Hungarian Churches is slow and ambiguous. Even more, if we take a closer look we can observe that while most of those properties are still not restituted, the state makes substantial donations to the Orthodox Church, which is a clear act of discrimination. Russia
14 August 2017 Russia has unveiled its new fleet of 'invisible' supersonic fighter jets during an air display event as part of an aviation festival marking the 105th anniversary of the establishment of the Russian Air Force. The £120million Sukhoi-57, which will have a top speed of 1,615 mph, is said to rival America's F-22 and China's Chengdu J-20. The plane was called 'PAK FA' and 'T-50' during its developmental stage. It enters military service in 2019. The jet will carry K-77M missiles with a reported range of 125 miles. The U.S. AIM-120D Scorpion has a shorter range of about 100 miles. In 2015, it was reported that it will be able to fly at a maximum altitude of 20 kilometers with top speeds of 2,600 kilometers per hour. Russia's state military aviation manufacturer has previously claimed the jet will be cheaper to produce than its US equivalent with units costing less than £120million. The country's armed forces will receive an initial batch of 12 of the aircraft, Tass reports. /photos/ (Source: DailyMail)

Spain
17 Aug 2017 Terrorist attack with the intention of killing as many people as possible. isis Fiat van attack in Las Ramblas in the heart of Barcelona killed thirteen and injured more than 100 before suspect fled on foot. The incident has taken place at the height of the tourist season in Barcelona, which is one of Europe's top travel destinations with at least 11 million visitors a year. Police are still hunting two armed men who have escaped. In the early hours of this morning five terrorists were shot dead in Cambrils, a coastal resort 70 miles from Barcelona, and another was injured by police. A house explosion which killed one person has been linked to the attacks. Documents found at the scene of the explosion contain details of terror attack. Police said two people arrested in connection with the terror attack in Barcelona were linked with an address in Alcanar, 125 miles south of the city where a home exploded caused by canisters filled with butane. One is from Melilla (a Spanish enclave in north Africa) and the other is Moroccan. One person was arrested in Alcanar and the other, a Moroccan, in Ripoll. One person was shot dead as a car attempted to break through a police cordon. The CIA had warned local police two months ago that La Rambla could be the scene of a terrorist attack. President Trump posted on Twitter that his administration condemns the day's terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain – then tweeted a false story about beating Islamic terrorism by shooting Muslims with bullets dipped in pigs' blood. Trump's anecdote is a fictional story that he told in South Carolina ahead of the state's Republican presidential primary in February 2016. The story centers on Pershing's supposed killing of prisoners during the early 1900s when his army was targeted by an insurgent guerrilla campaign of Muslim 'Juramentados' who targeted Christians with gruesome sword attacks. Pershing was governor of the Philippines' Moro Province at the time. 'They were having terrorism problems, just like we do,' Trump said. 'He caught 50 terrorists that did tremendous damage and killed many people and he took the 50 terrorists and he took 50 men and he dipped 50 bullets in pig's blood.' 'And he had his men load his rifles, and he lined up the 50 people, and they shot 49 of those people, and the 50th person, he said; 'You go back to your people and you tell them what happened'. ''And for 25 years,' Trump ended, 'there wasn't a problem. For 25 years there wasn't a problem. Okay? Twenty-five years, there wasn't a problem. So we better start getting tough!' Now Trump upped Pershing's effectiveness by 10 years, to 35. Problematically for him, the bullets-in-pigs-blood episode never happened. (Source: DailyMail): http://tinyurl.com/y73v5w2v

August 12, 2017 Hundreds of Basques turned out on the streets in support of Catalonia and its planned referendum on independence from Madrid, an ambition long fought for by Basque separatists. The demonstration was symbolic, in a region still marked by decades of violence waged by armed separatist group ETA, and where the desire for independence remains strong despite the current peaceful times. Marokkó
2017. VIII. 12. (20 August, 2017)  Trump and the CEOs: behind the collapse of an uneasy alliance. America’s top companies were cautiously optimistic the president’s policy goals were their own - then came the travel ban, Paris and Charlottesville. Few chief executives openly supported candidate Trump in the 2016 election. By the end of August 2016, not one CEO at the nation’s 100 largest companies had donated to his campaign, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis. Comforting some executives, Mr. Trump appointed several CEOs to his cabinet, such as Exxon Mobil Corp.’s Tillerson and billionaire investor Ross. Last week saw a parade of top executives distancing themselves from the president, in some cases sharply, in response to his comments about racial violence in Charlottesville, Va. Charlottesville was the tipping point, not the cause. Behind the scenes, some executives say, ties had been growing strained for months. Then-Uber Technologies Inc. CEO Kalanick, initially a supporter of Silicon Valley engaging the president, was the first to quit a White House council in early February, following employee pressure and a social-media backlash relating to Uber’s response to the president’s proposed travel ban. Crane, former CEO of power company NRG Energy Inc., and now senior operating executive at Pegasus Capital Advisors, said the president’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accords, despite intensive industry lobbying, “was seen as a slap in the face by many executives.” Apple Inc. executives chose to bite their tongues when in July the president incorrectly portrayed the company’s plans to build plants in the U.S. “We have always believed that dialogue is critical to progress; that is why I joined the President’s Forum,” International Business Machines Corp. CEO Rometty wrote to employees last week, noting that IBM had worked with every U.S. president since Wilson. “But this group can no longer serve the purpose for which it was formed.” She added that IBM would continue to work with “all parts of the government” on policies it supports. As early as February, the heads of two dozen manufacturers got a taste of the president’s style. At a White House meeting to discuss job creation, Mr. Trump urged General Electric Co.’s GE Immelt to share how the president hit a hole-in-one during a golf game they played together. The question now is whether Mr. Trump can win them back. “We have an incredible amount of CEOs that want to give us their advice and guidance,” one official said. Some business leaders broke with Mr. Trump after the June decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord. Dozens had publicly urged the president to stick with the climate deal, and several, including Dow Chemical Co. head Liveris and Apple’s Mr. Cook made the case directly to the president that the treaty benefited job growth. The discussion picked up steam in July, when Mr. Trump moved to ban transgender people from serving in the military, they said. In recent weeks, IBM’s Ms. Rometty and Boston Consulting Group head Mr. Lesser asked Mr. Schwarzman, the head of the strategy advisory council, about the future of the group and its effectiveness, given the pressure they were under from employees and the public. Mr. Trump’s initial immigration ban, imposed days after his inauguration, posed the first major test. Some tech companies had immigrant employees stranded outside the U.S. Employees at technology firms in particular were restive. Microsoft Corp. initially issued a neutral-sounding statement stressing the importance of immigration. A day later, it sharpened the tone, calling the policy a “fundamental step backwards.” By early February, more than 130 mostly tech companies had joined legal action against the ban. The unrest in Charlottesville, and the president’s response, pushed even supporters to make a break. After Mr. Trump’s news conference, in which he apportioned blame equally between hate groups and people protesting them in Charlottesville, other executives said they had no choice but to go. Aug 19, 2017 Google revealed in a blog post of Rogers, data editor of Google News Labs, that it is now using machine - called The Documenting Hate News Index learning - to document "hate crimes and events" in America  from the past six months. They've partnered with liberal groups like ProPublica, BuzzFeed News, and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to make information about 'hate events' easily accessible to journalists. And now, there are troubling signs that this tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy. A quick glance at the list of partners for this project should raise some red flags: The ProPublica-led coalition includes The Google News Lab, Univision News, the New York Times, WNYC, BuzzFeed News, First Draft, Meedan, New America Media, The Root, Latino USA, The Advocate, 100 Days in Appalachia and Ushahidi. The coalition is also working with civil-rights groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, and schools such as the University of Miami School of Communications. ProPublica poses as a middle-of-the-road non-profit journalistic operation, but in reality, it's funded by a stable of uber-liberal donors, including Soros's Open Society Foundations and Sandler's, billionaire former mortgage bankers. The Southern Poverty Law Center, of course, is infamous for targeting legitimate conservatives groups, branding them as "hate groups". (Source: PJMedia): http://tinyurl.com/ybcvhqsz

Aug 18, 2017  Confederate monuments are being removed around the country under pressure from those who say they honor a regime that enslaved African-Americans. Annapolis, Maryland: a statue of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Taney, who wrote the 1857 Scott decision that upheld slavery and denied citizenship to African-Americans, was removed from the grounds of the Maryland State House and trucked away to storage. Three of four voting members of the State House Trust voted to move the bronze statue, which was erected in 1872. Helena, Montana: the city removed a granite fountain that stood in a park as a monument to Confederate soldiers since 1916. One of a few people on hand to oppose the removal was detained. Aug 18, 2017   Bannon is out at White House. “Chief of Staff Kelly and Bannon have mutually agreed today would be Steve’s last day. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best,” press secretary Huckabee Sanders said in a statement. The danger for Trump is that Bannon will unleash Breitbart and other conservative media against the White House. Bannon had a rocky relationship with some of Trump’s top aides, especially Kushner and National Economic Council director Cohn, and has shown he’s not averse to a scorched-earth policy. Bannon’s departure could empower more moderate voices in the administration, including Cohn and Secretary of State Tillerson. (Source: TheNewYorkPost)

18 August, 2017  Like isis, which smashed the storied ruins of Palmyra, and the al-Qaida rebels who ravaged the fabled Saharan city of Timbuktu, the new barbarism has come to America. First in his class at West Point, hero of the Mexican War, Lee was the man to whom President Lincoln turned to lead his army. But when Virginia seceded, Lee would not lift up his sword against his own people and chose to defend his home state rather than wage war upon her. On the militant left today, the name Lee evokes raw hatred and howls of “racist and traitor.” A clamor has arisen to have all statues of him and all Confederate soldiers and statesmen pulled down from their pedestals and put in museums or tossed onto trash piles. There have been no great new discoveries about Lee. What has changed is America herself. She is not the same country. Two years ago, Virginia Gov. McAuliffe called the giant statues of Lee and “Stonewall” Jackson on Richmond’s Monument Avenue “parts of our heritage.” After Charlottesville, New York-born-and-bred McAuliffe, entertaining higher ambitions, went full scalawag, demanding the statues be pulled down as “flashpoints for hatred, division and violence.” McAuliffe is echoed by Lt. Gov. Northam, the Democratic candidate in November to succeed McAuliffe. In Durham, North Carolina, our Taliban smashed the statue of a Confederate soldier. Near the entrance of Duke University Chapel, a statue of Lee has been defaced, the nose broken off. Baltimore carried out a cultural cleansing by taking down statues of Lee and Maryland Chief Justice Taney. For there are 10 Confederates in Statuary Hall in the Capitol, among them Lee, Georgia’s Stephens, vice president to Davis, and Davis himself. The Black Caucus wants them gone. Mount Rushmore-sized carvings of Lee, Jackson and Davis are on Stone Mountain, Georgia. Are they to be blasted off? There are countless universities, colleges and high schools like Washington & Lee named for Confederate statesmen and soldiers. Across the Potomac from D.C. are Jefferson Davis Highway and Leesburg Pike to Leesburg itself, 25 miles north. Are all highways, streets, towns and counties named for Confederates to be renamed? What about Fort Bragg? On every Civil War battlefield, there are monuments to the Southern fallen. Gettysburg has hundreds of memorials, statues and markers. But if, as the left insists we accept, the Confederates were traitors trying to tear America apart to preserve an evil system. What do we do with those battlefields where Confederates were victorious: Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville? “Where does this all end?” President Trump asked. It doesn’t. Not until America’s histories and biographies are burned and new texts written to Nazify Lee, Jackson, Davis and all the rest, will a newly indoctrinated generation of Americans accede to this demand to tear down and destroy what their fathers cherished. And once all the Confederates are gone, one must begin with the explorers, and then the slave owners like Presidents Washington, Jefferson and Madison, who seceded from slave-free Britain. White supremacists all. Then there are all those segregationists. From 1865 to 1965. While easy for Republicans to wash their hands of such odious elements as Nazis in Charlottesville, will they take up the defense of the monuments and statues that have defined our history, or capitulate to the icon-smashers? In this Second American Civil War, whose side are you on? (Source: WND)

Aug. 16, 2017    U.S. begins Nafta negotiations. “We feel that Nafta has fundamentally failed many, many Americans and needs major improvement,” said Lighthizer, the United States trade representative, who is leading the United States team aiming to overhaul the 25-year-old agreement. The Canadian and Mexican representatives were publicly pleasant, emphasizing their commitment to regional trade and the benefits resulting from a regional alliance. But both nations also say the current agreement is not tilted against the United States. The overarching issue is the importance of trade deficits. Americans buy more goods and services from Mexico than Mexicans buy from the United States. Last year, the difference was $55.6 billion. Over time the United States has run a significant trade deficit with Canada, too. Such trade deficits, Mr. Lighthizer said, “can’t continue.” Canada and Mexico float their currencies. Another area of potential conflict concerns the automobile industry. The United States wants to discourage importation of auto parts from countries outside the Nafta region. Under the current agreement, a car assembled in Mexico can be imported into the United States without paying an import tax if at least 62.5 percent of the car, measured by value, was made in North America. The Trump administration wants to raise that bar. (Source: TheNewYorkTimes)

August 16, 2017 Forbidden fruits? Children of Catholic priests live with secrets and sorrow. In Ireland, Mexico, Poland, Paraguay, and other countries, in American cities big and small - indeed, virtually anywhere the church has a presence - the children of priests form an invisible legion of secrecy and neglect. With more than 400,000 priests worldwide, many of them inconstant in their promise of celibacy, the potential for unplanned children is vast. They are the unfortunate victims of a church that has, for nearly 900 years, forbidden priests to marry or have sex, but has never set rules for what priests or bishops must do when a clergyman fathers a child, relying on the priests’ generosity - or, simply, their conscience - to determine how much support to provide. The Irish have put a name to Priests fathering children. The Irish surname McEntaggart comes from the Gaelic for “son of a priest,” while the surname McAnespi is commonly thought to mean “son of a bishop.” In the 1990s, leaders of several women’s religious orders issued a series of confidential reports to the Vatican. One report described a 1988 incident in Malawi in which the local bishop dismissed leaders of a women’s congregation after they complained that local priests had impregnated 29 sisters. The Holy See treated the pregnancies as an isolated phenomenon, rather than a sign of a widespread but hidden problem. (Source: BostonGlobe)

August 15, 2017  In the latest issue of al Qaeda's chief propaganda organ Inspire Magazine, highlighted by the August 15, 2017 Middle East Media Research Institute, Asiri, the al Qaeda terror group's chief bomb maker has published a blueprint for new attacks on U.S. transportation systems, including planes, trains, and boats, which the terror group views as "prime targets" weak links ripe for attack. The shift to lone-wolf attacks highlights al Qaeda's continued influence and brand strength among jihadists following the rise of splinter groups such as isis. Trains are of particular significance to this plan, especially freight trains that carry a range of key consumer products. "Some transport companies may get into bankruptcy if targeted regularly and are unable to secure themselves, this will make people seize using such a company for their transportation needs," according to the article. Aug 14, 2017 Health officials are urging people to take precautions after a second Arizona county in two weeks confirmed that fleas in the area have tested positive for plague. The announcement by Navajo County Public Health officials comes one week after Coconino County officials found prairie dogs in the area to be carrying fleas with the plague -- the infectious disease infamous for killing millions of Europeans in the Middle Ages. People are advised to take certain measures to reduce the risk of exposure to this serious disease, which can be present in fleas, rodents, rabbits and predators that feed on these animals. The disease can be transmitted to humans and other animals by the bite of an infected flea or by direct contact with an infected animal. Symptoms of plague in humans generally appear within two to six days following exposure and include the following: fever, chills, headache, weakness, muscle pain, and swollen lymph glands (called “buboes”) in the groin, armpits or limbs. The disease can become septicemic (spreading throughout the bloodstream) and/or pneumonic (affecting the lungs), but is curable with proper antibiotic therapy if diagnosed and treated early. Aug 13th 2017 Witnesses said moments before the car plowed into the crowd, a counter-protester had allegedly thrown a rock at the car, causing the driver to swivel around and ram into people and two cars in its way. Right-wing blogger Kessler planned what he called a 'pro-white' rally to protest Charlottesville's decision to remove a statue of Confederate General Lee. The statue has been the focal point for a number of white supremacist protests since the council voted to remove the structure in April and rename the park. /photos/ (Source. Aug 12, 2017 One person was killed and nineteen others were injured in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a car plowed through a group of counter-protesters who were demonstrating against an alt-right and white nationalist rally. There was violence between protesters and counter protesters. A 32-year-old woman was killed and the suspect vehicle which fled was found moments later and a male driver, Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio was arrested. Yesterday and today alt-right rallies were held to protest the removal of a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Lee. Supporters gathered in Emancipation Park today morning in anticipation of a noon rally held by "Unite the Right." State police and members of the Virginia National Guard surrounded the park after Virginia Gov. McAuliffe declared a state of emergency and the city of Charlottesville declared the alt-right protest an unlawful assembly - effectively canceling the demonstration before its planned start time. The car later struck a group of people downtown. (Source: USAToday)

170817 For the first time, scientists have directly detected gravitational waves - ripples in space-time - in addition to light from the spectacular collision of two neutron stars. This marks the first time that a cosmic event has been viewed in both gravitational waves and light. The discovery was made using the U.S.-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO); the Europe-based Virgo detector; and some 70 ground- and space-based observatories. Neutron stars are the smallest, densest stars known to exist and are formed when massive stars explode in supernovas. As these neutron stars spiraled together, they emitted gravitational waves that were detectable for about 100 seconds; when they collided, a flash of light in the form of gamma rays was emitted and seen on Earth about two seconds after the gravitational waves. In the days and weeks following the smashup, other forms of light, or electromagnetic radiation - including X-ray, ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and radio waves - were detected. The observations have given astronomers an unprecedented opportunity to probe a collision of two neutron stars. For example, observations made by the U.S. Gemini Observatory, the European Very Large Telescope, and the Hubble Space Telescope reveal signatures of recently synthesized material, including gold and platinum, solving a decades-long mystery of where about half of all elements heavier than iron are produced. The LIGO-Virgo results are published today in the journal Physical Review Letters. (Source: LIGO): https://tinyurl.com/y8gun8lt

12 August 2017 New Horizons, which captured incredible images of Pluto in July 2015, was powered down in April to conserve energy as it travelled through the Kuiper Belt, a vast region of icy debris which encircles the Sun and planets, also known as The Third Zone. On September 11, the spacecraft will awaken for its 16 month journey to MU69, an ancient object which is thought to be one of the early building blocks of the Solar System. The flyby will be the most distant in the history of space exploration, a billion miles beyond Pluto, and four billion miles from Earth. New Horizons was the fastest spacecraft to ever launch and is partly powered by nuclear energy. When it launched in January 2006 Pluto was still a planet, but just a few months later it was downgraded to a dwarf-planet or ‘plutoid’ and is now known officially as ‘asteroid number 134340’. The spacecraft is carrying the ashes of the scientist who discovered Pluto, Tombaugh who died on January 17 1997, nine years and two days before New Horizon’s launch. One of his final requests was for his ashes to be sent into space. (Source: TheTelegraph)
