Magyarország    Hungary
2017. III. 30. March 30, 2017 The Central European University (CEU) operates in the English language; its 1,440 students come from 108 nations; more than half the faculty and the large majority of the administrative staff are Hungarian; and the rector is a former Liberal Party politician Ignatieff, who is Canadian and married to a Hungarian. The university is under direct attack by Hungary’s right-wing prime minister, Viktor Orbán, whose government has added an amendment to anti-immigration legislation that would regulate the movement of international staff and students for unspecified “national security reasons.” The effect of the proposed law would be to “make it impossible for the university to continue its operations,” according to the CEU. But the real reason that the CEU has been targeted is the identity of its founder — the financier and Open Society Foundations activist Soros. The CEU matters; it is part of the larger test of Western liberal values. Viktor Orbán has spoken of his determination to pursue an “illiberal democracy” in Hungary. In other times, we could protest the kind of bullying intolerance shown by Orbán through the U.S. ambassador, but the Trump administration has yet to appoint one in Hungary. / by Priddle (Source: ForeignPolicy)

2017. III. 28. A migrációs terveket leggyakrabban a nyelvtudás hiánya húzza keresztül. (Forrás: HírTv)

2017. III. 26. A strasbourgi Európai Emberi Jogi Bíróság messze túlterjeszkedett minden határon, amikor Magyarországgal szemben a bangladesi migránsok ügyében ítéletet hozott – jelentette ki Kósa, a Fidesz frakcióvezetője. A bangladesieket menekülteknek titulálták, noha semmi közük a menekült-státuszhoz; migránsok.

2017. III. 23.

March 22, 2017  A multi-isotope study of five fifth-century AD cemeteries in modern-day Hungary to determine relationships between nomadic-pastoralist incomers - the historically documented Huns and other nomadic groups - and the sedentary agricultural population of the late Roman province of Pannonia. Contemporary historical sources describe this relationship as adversarial and destructive for the late Roman population, but archaeological evidence indicates high levels of hybridity between different groups. We undertook carbon, nitrogen, strontium and oxygen isotope analyses of bone collagen, dentine and tooth enamel at Keszthely-Fenékpuszta, Hács-Béndekpuszta, Győr-Széchenyi Square, Mözs and Szolnok-Szanda to examine these relationships through past subsistence practices. The patterns at all sites indicate medium to high animal protein consumption with little evidence for a significant contribution of aquatic resources. All populations relied to a great extent on C4 plants, most likely millet. Within each population, diet was heterogeneous, with significant variations in terms of animal protein and C3 and C4 plant consumption. High levels of intra-population and individual variability suggest that populations made use of a range of subsistence strategies, with many individuals exhibiting significant changes over their lifetimes. Rather than being characterised only by violence, the historically-documented influx of nomadic populations appears to have led to widespread changes in subsistence strategies of populations in the Carpathian basin. Nomadic-pastoralist groups may have switched to smaller herds and more farming, and, conversely, local populations may have integrated with a new economic system based on animal herding. 2017. III. 21. A szovjetek polgári titkosszolgálatának, a KGB-nek több utódszervezete is létezik a mai Oroszországban, ezek olykor versengenek is egymással. A legfontosabbak: a klasszikus külföldi hírszerzéssel foglalkozó SZVR, illetve az eredetileg hazai elhárításra szakosodott, de azóta jócskán túlterjeszkedő, a „közel-külföldön″ és másutt is igen aktív és agresszív FSZB. A Szovjetunió másik szolgálata a Vörös Hadsereg katonai titkosszolgálata, a GRU volt, ami szervezetileg is túlélte a rendszerváltást, és jelenleg ez számít a putyini Oroszország legnagyobb külföldi szolgálatának.    Tízes skálán mennyire súlyos az orosz veszély jelenleg Európában?    Kilences-tízes, a legmagasabb fokozatú.
2017. III. 22. Programjának központi eleme a NATO-ból való kilépés. Mar 23, 2013 "The world's largest artificial sun", a giant honeycomb-like setup of 149 spotlights — officially known as "Synlight" — is in Juelich, about 30 kilometers west of Cologne. It uses xenon short-arc lamps normally found in cinemas to simulate natural sunlight. By focusing the entire array on a single 20-by-20 centimeter (8x8 inch) spot, scientists from the German Aerospace Center, or DLR, will be able to produce the equivalent of 10,000 times the amount of solar radiation that would normally shine on the same surface. Creating such furnace-like conditions — - with temperatures of up to 3,000 degrees Celsius - is key to testing novel ways of making hydrogen, according to Hoffschmidt, the director of DLR's Institute for Solar Research. Many consider hydrogen to be the fuel of the future which has to be made by splitting water into its two components  -  the other being oxygen  -  in a process that currently requires large amounts of electricity. Once researchers have mastered hydrogen-making techniques with Synlight's 350-kilowatt array, the process can be scaled up ten-fold on the way to reaching a level fit for industry. The goal is to eventually use actual sunlight rather than the artificial light produced at the Juelich experiment, which requires as much electricity in four hours as a four-person household would use in a year. By combining hidrogen with carbon monoxide produced from renewable sources, scientists would be able to make eco-friendly kerosene for the aviation industry. (Source: ABCNews)

Friday 24 March 2017  In the hours after the London attack, the Daily Mail found islamic state terror manuals online through simple searches on Google and Twitter. One included a section on using vehicles as weapons. It told jihadists in the West to learn from Palestinian terrorists who ‘have resorted to using cars as tools of war, also knives as weapons which are easily available from DIY stores’. The manual was published a year ago, before the vehicle attacks in Nice, Berlin and London, which have killed 102 people and injured more than 500. Johnson accused social media sites of inciting terrorism. Jihadi terror manuals on how to use a car as a 'tool of war' for mass murder can be found in just two minutes on Google and Twitter. And Google’s YouTube video platform was found to be raking in money from conspiracy theories saying the London outrage was a hoax. Masood, 52, a bodybuilder and violent criminal who claimed to have been a teacher, raced across Westminster Bridge in a hire car, smashing into pedestrians at up to 70mph, killing three and injuring 28. Born Elms in Kent, Masood had converted to Islam and was ‘on the radar’ of MI5. Last night, Google removed links to the manuals that were found by the Mail. Among those injured in Wednesday’s attack were nationals from France, Romania, South Korea, Germany, Poland, Ireland, China, Italy, the US and Greece. Twelve of the victims had to be treated in hospital for serious injuries. Within hours of the attack, YouTube was hosting hundreds of videos claiming the atrocity was faked and that the emergency services were in on an elaborate plot to terrify ordinary citizens. Others claim that the atrocity was orchestrated by Jews trying to frame Islamists, Freemasons, or the ‘New World Order’... Netflix, Guess, Trivago, Opodo, Asus and SunLife insurance have adverts alongside videos published by conspiracy theorists on Google’s YouTube platform. Google profits from the ads itself, but also hands a cut directly to those who post shocking videos. (Source: DailyMail)

23 March, 2017  As we age, our cells accumulate DNA damage, which beyond a certain threshold cannot be repaired. At this point, cells can either turn cancerous, self-destruct, or enter a semi-dormant state, called senescence. Initially senescent cells were thought to be neutral bystanders that no longer make a useful biological contribution but that are harmless. There is now growing evidence for the role of senescent cells in age-related diseases, with higher concentrations of the cells being seen in arthritic joints, cataracts and the plaque-lined arteries. Possibility that a future therapy that rids the body of senescent cells might protect against the ravages of old age. (Source: TheQuardian): http://tinyurl.com/k5xkany

21 March 2017  Britain banned laptops from cabins of flights from six countries in middles east amid fears terrorists have developed bombs that can be hidden inside. Items such as laptops, iPads, Kindles, Nintendo 3DS game consoles, DVD players will be banned. The ban applies to any electric devices larger than 16cm by 9.3cm by 1.5cm. The move was imposed just hours after a similar ban was unveiled by the United States. The US ban – which comes into force from Saturday afternoon  -  applies to ten airports in eight countries, also including Qatar and Kuwait. The ban will affect travellers on direct flights to the UK from Turkey, Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. A former GCHQ officer said: ‘Jihadists can get hold of Semtex and C4 and store this in the laptop and get through the X-ray system. 2017. III. 21. Ebben a kormányban töltött be miniszterelnök-helyettesi tisztséget tíz évig McGuinness.

Poland
((Suwalki gap A new concept recently appeared in the language of the US military: "Suwalki Gap" (przesmyk Suwalki in Polish) - the land corridor between Poland and Lithuania, or rather between Balarus and Kaliningrad. This sliver of the Polish border with Lithuania is wedged between Russian ally Belarus and the Russian Kaliningrad oblast. NATO's biggest post-Cold War exercise in Eastern Europe -- the June 2016 Anaconda manuvers in Poland -- focused partly on defending the Gap, amid what one analyst dubbed "sophisticated" and "intimidating" exercises in Kaliningrad and Belarus. "Russia could take over the Baltic states faster than we would be able to defend them," the commander of US ground forces in Europe, General Hodges, admitted to Germany's Die Zeit weekly. There are similarities between the "Suwalki Gap" and its prototype, the Fulda Gap". The expression "Fulda Gap" (the Germans say «Fulda-Lücke») was until 1989 one of the key concepts NATO defense strategy in Europe. The area around the West German city of Fulda, close to the border with the communist East Germany, behind which were concentrated Soviet troops ready to attack the West. The Suwalki Gap is relevant to the scenario in which Russia would attack the Baltics, either by conventional means or by "fifth column" methods similar to those used in the Crimea and Donbas. NATO forces would need to move rapidly to the territory of the Baltics. The narrow land corridor between Poland and Lithuania, the section of Suwalki-Kaunas, would be the key for the transfer of NATO forces to come to the aid of the Baltics. To counter NATO forces traveling to the Baltic countries, the Russians could deploy forces in the Kaliningrad region, or the grouping of troops in Belarus. The Suwalki Gap is considered to be the Achilles heel of Polish defence. It would not be neccessary for Russian forces to compreshensively occupy the Sulwaki Gap area. Rather, even a thin and discontinuous line of Russian forces strung out along the Gap would present a barrier the land reinforcement of the Baltics, unless NATO forces were prepared to force a passage and escalate the crisis. Convoys of semi-military trucks carrying "humanitarian assistance supplies" from Belarus to Kaliningrad should to the trick nicely. The region of Suwalki is a country of forested, marshy fenland and lakes, perhaps even more difficult to cross than the region farther west. (( Source: GlobalSecurity): http://tinyurl.com/ja9xg7u ))

28th March 2017  Russia warns of 'nuclear war' if US missiles carry on being shipped into Europe. Pentagon missiles in Europe and warships patrolling Russia's borders could lead to nuclear war, warned Putin's military bosses. The anti-ballistic missile system (ABM) is provoking a "new arms race". The ABM shield is a symbol of the build-up of rocket forces in the world and a trigger for a new arms race. “The presence of American ABM sites in Europe and ABM-capable ships in the seas and oceans close to Russia’s territory creates a powerful clandestine potential for delivering a surprise nuclear missile strike against Russia" - Poznikhir, top brass for the Russian general staff said. The stark warning came at a nuclear disarmament conference in Geneva. He said the Pentagon is developing the missile system to face Iran and North Korea, but ignoring objections raised by Russia. Russia warns the US will have 1,000 missiles at its fingertips which could pose a threat to them by 2020. (Source: DailyStar)

March 29, 2017  Western military commanders are concerned that large-scale Russian military exercises near the Baltic states in September pose heightened risks for a miscalculation that could lead to a crisis. The U.S. Senate approved Montenegro’s bid to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, an initiative Moscow has bitterly opposed. Officials of the Balkan nation have said Moscow backed a coup attempt there last year to derail the effort. Russia has denied involvement. The exercises, which Western officials estimate will involve nearly 100,000 troops, will be the first to roll out after a new NATO force in the region reaches full strength. They will also take place at the same time as military drills by Western forces in Sweden, across the Baltic Sea. For the Russians, the Zapad exercises conducted jointly by Russia and Belarus will be a chance to practice detecting, jamming and targeting allied forces with drones and advanced artillery, while spreading disinformation about its forces - techniques they employed in Ukraine. But they will also offer the U.S. and its allies a window on how Russia undertakes such efforts. The Swedish exercise will involve the U.S. and more than a half-dozen NATO allies. Some 19,000 troops will be involved in practicing for the territorial defense of Sweden, including Gotland Island, which U.S. officials consider critical for ensuring allied access to the Baltic States. Russia has said the Zapad exercise will involve 3,000 troops, below the number requiring notification. Retired Gen Breedlove, the former top NATO commander, has estimated 100,000 troops, however, and alliance officials have said it would be the largest exercise ever on the border of the Baltic states. March 27, 2016  Russian news site TASS revealed a reconnaissance drone that a soldier would shoot from “a hand-held grenade launcher.” The drone is prepared for launch within a period of 5 seconds to 3 minutes. An armed ground tank robot called “Whirlwind,” has been recently updated with a 30 mm gun and optional rockets. It works with a small quadcopter and a couple of toaster-sized bots that perform resupply and maintenance. A crew can control it remotely from a kilometer away or it can run semi-autonomously. Russian-backed forces in Ukraine have made liberal use of reconnaissance drones to target enemy positions, allowing artillery fire to arrive within minutes. (Source: DefenseOne)

FRONTEX
2017. III. 30. (EU) 2016/1624 rendelet). Europe
March 23, 2017 Across former Communist states of east and central Europe, leaders with a hardline bent have turned their wrath in recent months against Soros. Russian President Putin's crackdown on foreign-funded charities drove Soros's foundation out of Russia two years ago. In Macedonia, which has been embroiled in a political crisis that began two years ago with street demonstrations and forced prime minister Gruevski to resign last year after a decade in power, Gruevski is expected to return to power. He blames Soros for his downfall: "Soros turns Macedonian NGOs into a modern army," he told local magazine Republika in January. "They crush you. They make you a criminal, a thief, traitor, idiot, a monster, whatever they want. Then you have to go to elections." "He doesn't only do that in Macedonia but in a great number of countries." In Romania, ruling Social Democrat party leader Dragnea told a TV interviewer in January that Soros and "the foundations and structures that he has funded since 1990 have financed evil in Romania". Soros has also been attacked by members of Poland's ruling Law and Justice party and politicians elsewhere in the region. In countries like Hungary, so many human rights groups have sought OSF grants at some point that politicians can use the association with Soros to attack whole swathes of civil society. "Fake NGOs of the Soros empire are sustained to suppress national governments in favor of global capital and the world of political correctness," Németh, a deputy leader of Orbán's ruling Fidesz party, said in January.  A new law proposed by Orbán would require groups that receive foreign funding to register. Hungary's Helsinki Committee, a rights group founded in 1989 that has accepted Soros funding, helped defeat the government in court in Strasbourg. It argued that two Bangladeshi migrants had been unlawfully detained at a makeshift transit zone on the Hungarian-Serbian border and expelled with no regard to their future safety, in violation of their rights. Orbán has proposed new rules governing asylum due to take effect in coming days that his opponents say ignore the principles of the Strasbourg ruling. Helsinki co-Chair Pardavi says she expects to file many more cases on behalf of migrants who are in similar positions, which could generate a systemic intervention by Strasbourg and a tooth-and-nail fight with the government. Iraq
March 28, 2017  A sharp rise in the number of civilians reported killed in U.S.-led airstrikes in Iraq and Syria is spreading panic, deepening mistrust and triggering accusations that the United States and its partners may be acting without sufficient regard for lives of noncombatants. The increase comes as local ground forces backed by air support from a U.S.-led coalition close in on the islamic state’s two main urban bastions  -  Raqqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq. Israel
Mar. 21, 2017  Israel plans mass evacuation if war erupts again. If Islamic militants in Gaza or Lebanon go to war with Israel, they could find their usual targets empty. Israel is drawing up contingency plans to evacuate up to a quarter-million civilians from border communities to protect them from attacks from Hamas, Hezbollah or other Islamic militant groups. It also comes amid an uptick in tensions between Israel, Syria and Hezbollah. Each side has warned that a new conflict would be worse than previous ones. "In 2017, all of Israel is under threat," said Col. Bar of the military's Homefront Command. Evacuees would be housed in existing infrastructure, including hotels, schools and Kibbutz guest houses, he said. The plans cover up to 250,000 people who would be moved to safety if there is a conflict on multiple fronts, he said. Israel has a population of about 8.5 million. Israel, meanwhile, has been building up its missile defenses. A system called "David's Sling" to intercept medium-range missiles from Hezbollah is due to become operational in early April. That would mark the completion of a multilayer missile defense system that includes Iron Dome and Arrow, designed to intercept long-range ballistic missiles  -  of the type possessed by Iran — - high in the stratosphere. 31  March 2017  Latest WikiLeaks release shows how the CIA uses computer code to hide the origins of its hacking attacks and 'disguise them as Russian, Chinese, Iranian or North Korean activity'. It published 676 source code files today which it claimed are from CIA. (Source: Mail)

March 31st 2017  WikiLeaks releases Vault 7 "Marble" - 676 source code files for the CIA's secret anti-forensic Marble Framework. Marble is used to hamper forensic investigators and anti-virus companies from attributing viruses, trojans and hacking attacks to the CIA. Marble forms part of the CIA's anti-forensics approach and the CIA's Core Library of malware code. It is "[D]esigned to allow for flexible and easy-to-use obfuscation" as "string obfuscation algorithms (especially those that are unique) are often used to link malware to a specific developer or development shop." Marble was in use at the CIA during 2016. It reached 1.0 in 2015.  Marble has test examples not just in English but also in Chinese, Russian, Korean, Arabic and Farsi. The Marble Framework is used for obfuscation only and does not contain any vulnerabilties or exploits by itself. (Source: WikiLeaks): http://tinyurl.com/ksob8os

March 30, 2017 The Trump administration has stopped disclosing significant information about the size and nature of the U.S. commitment, including the number of U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Syria. “In order to maintain tactical surprise, ensure operational security and force protection, the coalition will not routinely announce or confirm information about the capabilities, force numbers, locations, or movement of forces in or out of Iraq and Syria,” said Pahon, a Pentagon spokesman. “The coalition commander’s intent is that isis be first to know about any additional capabilities the coalition or our partner forces may present them on the battlefield,” Pahon said. Even when news of a deployment leaks, officials will confirm only the broad description of the unit size being deployed  -  such as a brigade, which can be between 3,200 and 4,000 troops. The military does reveal what’s been dubbed a “force management level”  -  the number of full-time troops deployed, which is currently about 5,200 in Iraq and 500 in Syria. Pentagon officials acknowledge, however, that the number significantly understates the size of the U.S. troop presence because it does not include troops that are deployed on what the military considers a “temporary basis.” More than 1,000 troops are currently in the two countries in that status, which applies to troops deployed for less than about six months and security personnel. The count also excludes civilian contractors, several thousand of whom are in Iraq and Syria. In the absence of a specific authorization for use of troops in those two countries, the Pentagon for years has been relying on legal authority granted by Congress in 2001 to combat Al Qaeda and its affiliates. That authorization predated the existence of the islamic state by more than a decade. (Source: LosAngelesTimes)

March 28, 2017 The first day of the next major conflict shouldn’t look like war at all according to Roper, who runs the Pentagon’s Strategic Capabilities Office, Roper envisions, American forces will train to go to war with highly networked (and largely disposable) drones and missiles, which would be in constant communication with one another, learning collectively, constantly, and in real time to take out targets and adapt new defensive strategies. Those connections  -  between every machine on the battlefield, with humans, with deep learning programs that crunch every available piece of information about enemy defenses  -  will result in a crushing Day Three for the enemy. At least that’s the hope. (Source: DefenseOne): https://tinyurl.com/mqwfd3g

March 25, 2017 President Trump suffered a stunning political setback in a Congress controlled by his own party when Republican leaders pulled legislation to overhaul the U.S. healthcare system, a major 2016 election campaign promise of the president and his allies. House of Representatives leaders yanked the bill after a rebellion by Republican moderates and the party's most conservative lawmakers left them short of votes, ensuring that Trump's first major legislative initiative since taking office on Jan. 20 ended in failure. Democrats were unified against it. House Republicans had planned a vote on the measure after Trump cut off negotiations with Republicans who had balked at the plan and issued an ultimatum to vote, win or lose. But desperate lobbying by the White House and Republican House Speaker Ryan was unable to round up the 216 votes needed for passage. (Source. Yahoo)

March 24, 2017 A report commissioned by the U.S. Department of Defense was circulated among senior Trump administration officials this week, stating that Beijing has been encouraging Chinese companies to invest in American startups. According to the report, Chinese firms with strong ties to China's government have increasingly been investing in companies with cutting-edge technologies, many of which have potential military applications. These critical technologies include companies that make rocket engines for spacecraft, sensors for autonomous Navy ships and printers that make flexible screens for possible use in fighter plane cockpits, in addition to companies researching artificial intelligence. The investors could strike deals that give them access to intellectual property and the company's technology development process, while also having access to the startups' data on facilities and personnel. In 2015, Chinese firms invested $9.9 billion in startups, four times what had been invested the previous year. In 2014. China’s new J-31 stealth fighter closely resembled Lockheed Martin’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. The consensus in the defense industry has remained that Chinese hackers breached Lockheed’s programs to gain information on the plane, as well as long-range air surveillance radar systems. Other notable startups receiving Chinese investments include Quanergy, a company making light-detecting sensors for driverless cars; Kateeva, a Silicon Valley-based company making flexible screens that could be used in fighter jets; and XCOR Aerospace, an aerospace and commercial space travel company that works with NASA. March 23, 2017  Suburban immigration lawyer gets 15 months for asylum scam. Dekelaita 54, of Glenview cheated the immigration system like “a well-oiled machine,” the feds say. When he found a client seeking asylum in the United States, typically from Iraq, the suburban attorney would quickly forge that person’s name on an application and pepper the person’s life story with horrific hardships, including kidnappings, bombings and religious persecution  - all false. He drew inspiration from news articles he collected. Then he would employ a team of co-conspirators to help him forge documents, even allegedly bribing an immigration prosecutor, to usher the applicant through the asylum process. He fancied himself “a Robin Hood of refugees”. But he was an outlaw. And nearly a year after Dekelaita’s own criminal conviction, U.S. District Judge Kennelly sentenced him to 15 months in prison yesterday. The judge noted that, even if Dekelaita chose to break the law out of noble intentions, “you have to be willing to pay the price for it.” Dekelaita is an Assyrian Christian who came to the United States from Iraq when he was 10 years old as his family fled persecution from the Baath regime, according to his lawyers. They argued during his trial that illegal immigrants fearing deportation told their own lies to help the U.S. government build its case against Dekelaita. Many of Dekelaita’s clients now face deportation because of the fraud, prosecutors said. Prosecutors also charged two interpreters for helping Dekelaita pull off his scam. One, Benjamin, was sentenced in July 2015 to six months in prison for his role in the conspiracy. (Source: CBSChicago)

March 22, 2017  Defeating the islamic state is the top U.S. priority in the Middle East, but other countries will be expected to contribute more to stabilize Iraq and Syria once the militants are expelled, Secretary of State Tillerson said speaking at the State Department at the start of a two-day strategy session of more than 60 countries and international organizations in the U.S.-led coalition to defeat the islamic state. At the conference, Tillerson said the coalition will seek to establish “interim zones of stability” in Iraq and Syria and allow refugees to return home safely. Rather than the “safe zones” protected by U.S. air cover that the Syrian opposition and some allies have long demanded for civilians besieged  by Syrian and Russian bombing in the separate civil war against Assad, Tillerson’s “interim zones of stability” refer to areas cleared of islamic state fighters by the coalition and Turkey. The Turkish military, with some assistance from rebels, the United States and Russia, has pushed the islamic state from a zone of several thousand square miles inside Syria along the Turkish border. Turkey has declared this a “safe zone,” and indicated that it may begin sending Syrian refugees back inside. Other areas in Syria, participating in a partly successful cease-fire between Assad and the rebels, orchestrated by Russia, Turkey and Iran, are now also considered “safe.”In areas being cleared of the islamic state by the coalition in both Syria and Iraq, the United States plans to install interim local governance during an upcoming “stability phase.”  (Source: TheWashingtonPost)

Mar 21, 2017  A new law authorizes $19.5 billion in spending for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for the budget year that began Oct. 1. The measure amends current law to add human exploration of the red planet as a goal for the agency. It supports use of the International Space Station through at least 2024, along with private sector companies partnering with NASA to deliver cargo and experiments, among other steps. Pence announced that Trump plans to re-launch the National Space Council, with Pence as chairman, to coordinate U.S. space policy. The council was authorized by law in 1988, near the end of the Reagan administration, but ceased to operate soon after Clinton took office in January 1993. (Source: AP)

Globalization
March 2017  Musk has launched a company that hopes to link your brain to a computer. The company, called Neuralink, was developing "neural lace" technology that would allow people to communicate directly with machines without going through a physical interface. Neuralink was registered as a medical-research company in California in July. Neural lace involves implanting electrodes in the brain so people could upload or download their thoughts to or from a computer, according to the report. The product could allow humans to achieve higher levels of cognitive function. Musk first described the potential product at Vox Media's Code Conference in 2016, saying it would allow humans to achieve symbiosis with machines. Facebook is also exploring similar technology through Building 8, its secretive hardware division. The group is developing noninvasive brain-computer interface technology that would allow people to communicate with external hardware devices. Musk is attempting to set up safety standards for artificial intelligence through his nonprofit, OpenAI, which he founded with Y Combinator's Altman in 2015. Researchers at universities like the University of California and Duke are also developing brain-computer interface technology that would allow people with paraplegia to walk again. Musk also plans to launch the Boring Company, a venture dedicated to building an underground network of tunnels to reduce traffic. (Source: Businessinsider): http://tinyurl.com/kpca4w8

03.26.17  In the movie Her, Twombly falls in love with Samantha, an artificially intelligent operating system. In Ex Machina, Caleb falls in love with the sentient robot Ada. Both Samantha and Ada are conscious - like humans, they experience the world objectively and subjectively, and both express emotions, genuine or not, toward the human characters. It’s easy to understand why these lonely men fall for them, especially given Ada’s sexualized appearance and Samantha’s husky ScarJo voice. But these are just movies. In the real world, robots aren’t conscious. They can’t feel anything. Robots are comprised of circuits, cameras, and algorithms. They’re machines, tools, not beings. But what explains our feelings for them? The more humanlike a robot seems in both appearance and ability, the easier it is for us to project human thoughts and feelings onto them (this effect is even more pronounced in Japan, where followers of Shinto or animism believe that objects can have souls). Anthropomorphizing is a natural human tendency. MIT researcher Darling conducts experiments in which people play with Pleos, small mechanized dinosaurs, and are then asked to “torture” them. Participants often can’t bear to do it and can’t watch when others do, even though they know Pleos can’t feel anything. Robots such as the TALON 3B find and defuse land mines in war zones. An Army colonel put an end to a military exercise in which a persistent TALON robot lost all but one leg because it was “inhumane'. Humans respond with more empathy to other humans, but they also respond with observable empathy toward robots. Human empathy toward robots is perhaps the most compelling argument for robot rights or protections. Researchers from Munich conducted a study demonstrating that when robots mirror human emotions by smiling back at them or matching their level of enthusiasm, humans are more disposed to help them complete a task. The ability to feel emotion is currently a crucial difference between humans and robots which have become objects of our affection. (Source: TheDailyBeast)

25 Mar 2017  isis fanatics used the secretive messaging site Telegram to call for a 'lone wolf' attack on Parliament just weeks before Masood struck. The social network site – formed by Durov, 32, in 2014 before he fled his native Russia over fears for his life – is a go-to tool for terrorists because it commands “end-to-end encryption”. It means security forces are unable to hack the service, which has more than 100 million active users, or intercept the information they share. Durov claims there is “little you can do” to stop terrorists using the service. Hundreds of videos, bomb-making guides and military manuals were also uploaded to the site. islamic state’s previous recruiting tool was Twitter  -  which this week claimed to have closed 376,890 terror-linked accounts. Telegram’s encryption means messages are visible only to the person who has sent them and the individuals meant to receive them. (Source: Mirror)

March 30, 2017  Spacewalking astronauts lost an important piece of cloth shielding needed for the International Space Station when it floated away. Astronaut Whitson immediately reported the mishap to Mission Control. NASA said it would be monitored to make sure it doesn't come back and hit the station. Each fabric shield weighs 18 pounds. When unfolded, it is about 2 inches thick and measures about 5 feet by 2 feet, according to NASA. The entire 250-mile-high space station is protected, in some fashion, against possible debris strikes. (Source: LosAngelesTimes)
