Germany
August 28, 2016  German Chancellor Merkel's domestic popularity has declined, the Emnid poll for the Bild am Sonntag newspaper showed, with 50 percent of Germans against her serving a fourth term in office after a federal election next year. Support for Merkel has weakened after a string of violent attacks on civilians in July, three of which were carried out by asylum seekers. Of those, two were claimed by islamic state. This has raised opposition to Merkel's open-door migrant policy, which allowed hundreds of thousands from the Middle East, Africa and elsewhere into Germany last year. (Source: Yahoo)

28 Aug. 2016  German Military Intelligence (MAD) is looking into 268 right-wing, 64 Islamist and six left-wing potential extremists, including Islamist infiltrators in its ranks, Die Welt reports. A respective bill for changing the “Soldiers Law” should be adopted by the German government next week. The new measures are in line with a recently revealed state defense plan that encourages citizens to provide more support to the German military and to stockpile food in case of a major disaster or an armed attack. The chance of militants infiltrating army ranks is tightly connected with ongoing migrant crisis. (Source: RT): http://tinyurl.com/j24ysd8

Moldova
2016. VIII. 30. Mindeközben a Moldovai Köztársaságban petíciót indítottak Pettit kiutasítása érdekében. (Forrás: Székelyföld)

European Union
22 August 2016  'Borders are the worst invention ever!' EU chief Juncker widens rift with European leaders
as he calls for open borders speaking at the Alpbach Media Academy. He says borders should be scrapped despite migrant rush and terror attacks and Insists a stronger EU is best way to combating rising trend in nationalism. He has faced repeated calls to quit after his failure to keep Britain in the EU and the refugee and Greek debt crises. The contentious remarks from the Brussels chief are the polar opposite of moves by elected leaders of EU member states who have tighten their borders over recent months after more than a million entered the bloc from Syria in less than a year. In another remark, he appeared to warn of war on the continent if the EU disintegrates. Downing Street said Mr Juncker's views on borders were 'not something that the Prime Minister would agree with'. Mr Juncker was speaking as the leaders of Germany, France and Italy met for crisis talks as they plot to save the EU in the wake of Brexit. (Source: Mail)

China
August 22, 2016  Last week, China launched the world’s first quantum satellite from the Gobi desert. It is designed to establish ultra-secure quantum communications by transmitting uncrackable keys from space to the ground to literally teleport information, to distances 1,200 kilometers away. Experiments with light suggested that something about classical physics didn’t quite add up. Mathematical proofs were developed to explain that the tiny particles that make up matter — protons, neutrons, and electrons — don’t necessarily behave like you would expect particles to behave. They can act as if they are in two places at once, for instance. This is quantum theory. The first and most famous application of these ideas came in nuclear weaponry and energy. Physicists are still trying to agree on how classical and quantum physics come together coherently. But quantum theory already underlies a lot of modern technology; the transistors on a silicon chip, in fact, wouldn’t work without it. Quantum computers are using single atoms trapped in a magnetic field to represent either a “0” or a “1”. Let’s say you entangle two particles. Then you move one of them far, far away — to the other side of the planet, or to the Moon. No matter the distance, quantum mechanics says, they remain entangled. If you look at the first one, and in doing so change it — collapsing the superposition — you will also change the other one. And this will happen instantaneously, however far apart they are. Let that sink in, because this technique, called “quantum teleportation,” is crazy to think about. Light has a speed limit, and normally information cannot travel faster than light. Quantum teleportation is, in a sense, information traveling outside of space and time. Einstein called it “spooky action at a distance.” Testing quantum teleportation at extremely long distances requires going to space. It’s the easiest way to set up laser communication between two distant points on the earth’s surface. That’s what the Chinese satellite, developed in cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Science, intends to do. The satellite contains a machine that generates entangled pairs of photons by shooting a laser beam through a specially designed crystal. Each entangled pair will be split up and beamed down to stations on Earth approximately 1,200 km apart. If all goes as planned, researchers at those stations will share access to an entangled system. Any measurement on one of those photons will be instantaneously reflected in its opposite number at the other station. Being able to share basic information about the state of atomic particles across distance could create a powerful encryption tool. This is where the unbreakable code comes in. Quantum entanglement could help. If people on two ground stations share access to a large enough set of entangled photons, beamed to them from a satellite in space, they can generate a sufficiently long, random key by teleporting quantum information between the entangled particles. Nobody would be able to detect the transmission of the key. Thanks to the laws of quantum mechanics, any attempt by a third party to measure the particles in the entangled system would be immediately detected by the other two, making them aware that their code could be broken. 21 August 2016  China has commissioned a group of scientists to study the feasibility of building a manned radar station on the moon, but many experts on the mainland have questioned the potentially massive cost of the project and the usefulness of building such a base. The government project was launched earlier this year and received kick-start funding of 16 million yuan from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, according to its website. The proposed facility, which may include quarters for astronauts and a powerful radar antenna array at least 50 metres high, could monitor wider areas of our planet than existing satellites, according to scientists involved in the study. The base, which would be used for scientific research and defence monitoring, could also produce more powerful and clearer images of Earth as the high-frequency microwaves emitted by the radar station. It could not only penetrate cloud, but also the Earth’s surface, allowing it to monitor areas on land, under the sea and underground. The team leader is Professor Guo, a top radar technology expert at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Guo initially proposed the moon-based radar station in a research paper in the journal Science China Earth Sciences three years ago. To generate high intensity radio beams that could reach Earth, the radar station would need an enormous amount of power so a solar or nuclear power plant would have to be built, Guo said in the paper. The radar would generate at least 1.4 gigabytes of data each second. The design of a giant rocket the same size as the Saturn V in the US Apollo missions will be completed by 2020 to pave way for large scale activities in space including a “manned Moon landing”, according to a scientific and technological innovation plan announced by the central government earlier this month.  (Source: SouthChinaMorningPost)

Syria
Aug 24, 2016  Syria condemned Turkish incursion into an islamic state group-held border area - the crossing of the Turkey-Syria border by Turkish tanks and armoured vehicles towards the Jarabulus area with air cover from the US-led coalition - as a "flagrant violation" of its sovereignty. As semi-autonomous Kurdish authorities said the action amounted to a "declaration of war". "Chasing out is and replacing them with terrorist groups backed by Turkey is not fighting terrorism." Turkey's incursion is its first into Syria since February 2015, when hundreds of Turkish troops crossed the border to move the relics of the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey fears that Syrian Kurds may have designs on Jarabulus after seizing the strategic Manbij area in northern Syria from is. In Ankara visiting US Vice President Biden said Washington had made it clear that Kurdish-led forces in Syria must not deploy west of the Euphrates River. (Source: Yahoo)

August 30, 2016  Pentagon eyes missile-defense sensors in Space. Just west of the New Jersey Turnpike in Philadelphia’s suburbs, a latticework of steel is stretching skyward, preparing to support a prototype missile-defense radar so tall it required a local zoning variance. The building will house the prototype Long-Range Discrimination Radar, which Lockheed Martin executives say will track enemy missiles more precisely than today’s sensors. Tests in New Jersey will help shape an even larger missile tracking radar being built in Alaska at Clear Air Force Station, a military outpost near the Arctic Circle. The radar in Alaska will face southwest, directly at North Korea, which has been test-firing rockets at an unprecedented pace this year. The June test was of a Musudan, an intermediate-range missile that might be able to reach Guam, more than 2,100 miles away. Only six countries have submarines that can launch ballistic missiles operationally; North Korea would be No. 7. A missile sub would allow North Korea to maneuver beyond the field of view of fixed radars like the new one being built in Alaska. The efforts by several militaries to develop superfast hypersonic missiles, have U.S. planners envisioning missile detectors in orbit. The Missile Defense Agency is eyeing $400 million “to develop and test” a space-based sensor. It has already started work on something called “space-based kill assessment”: satellites that will determine if a missile is successfully intercepted in space. The Missile Defense Agency wants to use these satellites shoot down test over the Pacific Ocean. The project involves putting small payloads on commercial satellites. The radar in Alaska will have two 3,000 square-foot gallium nitride arrays that will watch North Korea. The radar will be able to see thousands of kilometers, “several times” farther than mobile radars that the Pentagon has sent to Japan to watch for North Korean missiles. 08/30/16  Soros' quiet overhaul of the U.S. justice system. Progressives have zeroed in on electing prosecutors as an avenue for criminal justice reform, and the billionaire financier is providing the cash to make it happen. While America’s political kingmakers inject their millions into high-profile presidential and congressional contests, Democratic mega-donor Soros has directed his wealth into an under-the-radar 2016 campaign to advance one of the progressive movement’s core goals — reshaping the American justice system. The billionaire financier has channeled more than $3 million into seven local district-attorney campaigns in six states over the past year — a sum that exceeds the total spent on the 2016 presidential campaign by all but a handful of rival super-donors. His money has supported African-American and Hispanic candidates for these powerful local roles, all of whom ran on platforms sharing major goals of Soros’, like reducing racial disparities in sentencing and directing some drug offenders to diversion programs instead of to trial. It is by far the most tangible action in a progressive push to find, prepare and finance criminal justice reform-oriented candidates for jobs that have been held by longtime incumbents and serve as pipelines to the federal courts — and it has inspired fury among opponents angry about the outside influence in local elections. August 29, 2016  The vast majority of the Syrian refugees permitted to resettle in the United States are Sunni Muslims –
9,726 of the 9,902, or 98.2 percent. Another 20 are Shi’a Muslims, and a further 85 are identified in the data simply as Muslims. The 47 Christians comprise seven Catholics, four Protestants, six Orthodox, one Greek Orthodox and 29 refugees self-reported simply as “Christian.” Apart from the Muslims and Christians, others admitted during FY 2016 are 14 Yazidis, four Jehovah’s Witnesses, five refugees identified as “other religion,” and one as having “no religion.” “When individuals say we should have a religious test and that only Christians, proven Christians, should be admitted, that’s offensive and contrary to American values,” Obama said last fall. About 10 percent of Syria’s population is Christian, but fewer than 0.5 percent of Syrian refugees admitted to the U.S. in FY 2016 are Christians. Over the entire civil war, the proportion of Christians admitted to the U.S. is just 0.8 percent (95 out of a total of 11,775). (Source: CNSNews): http://tinyurl.com/hwynux4

2016. VIII. 25. A többség, amelynek istenhívő szelleme ettől kezdve iránytű nélkül marad kiábrándul a kereszténységből.

August 25, 2016  Memo undercuts Hillary story on controversial Russian uranium deal, Clinton foundation. When Mrs. Clinton was questioned about a deal that gave Russia increased sway over uranium markets, the former secretary of state and now Democratic presidential nominee said she had no reason to intervene in the decision and didn't even know her husband's foundation was being enriched by its beneficiaries. 'I was not personally involved because that wasn't something the secretary of state did" - Clinton told WMUR a New Hampshire TV station in June 2015, the lone time she has addressed the controversy that first surfaced a year ago. State Department officials in fall 2009 - a year before the U.S. approved the deal -  obtained an internal strategy document from Russia's nuclear energy firm, Rosatom, that provided a warning about Moscow's intentions as it "flexes muscles" in uranium markets. In one cable sent to Clinton, U.S. officials in Brussels warned Russia was about to strong arm U.S. ally Ukraine into a deal for "long-term supply of nuclear fuel" that could "shut" the U.S. company Westinghouse out of the market and extend Moscow's influence over Europe.  Control over nuclear power plants in European markets could make them more reliant on natural gas exports at the heart of Russia's economy, the career diplomats worried. At issue is the 2010 sale of Uranium One to Rosatom. Due to Uranium One controlling a fifth of the U.S.'s uranium, the deal had to be approved by the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States, CFIUS, which is made up of nine voting members, including the Secretary of State. The deal would give the Russian government control over a sizable portion of America's uranium production capacity. Five Republican members of Congress led by Rep. King, R-N.Y., wrote that the deal "would pose great potential harm to the national security of the United States." It lays out a clear precept from career U.S. officials why expanding Russia's control of uranium markets was bad for the United States and for its allies in Europe. Despite the warning from her own diplomats and the lawmakers, Clinton did not use her position on the CFISUS to stop the deal. She had a statutory obligation to act, and she acts through inaction and Russia wins - Gray, a former U.S. ambassador to the European Union said in an interview. "What they've given Russia is a foothold, a big entrée into cornering the uranium markets and tipping the entire balance of the energy world." Gray said right now with low gas prices, control of uranium isn't important to everyday Americans but over time the energy landscape will likely change and Russia's increased leverage over the gas and nuclear markets will hurt American interests. While the CFIUS deliberations were taking place, people who stood to profit from Uranium One sale donated more than $2.6 million to the Clinton Foundation and an investment bank with connections to the Russian government paid former president Clinton $500,000 to deliver a speech more than his usual fee. Even before the sale was under consideration the Clinton Foundation received $31.3 million in donations from one person, Giustra, who stood to benefit from the sale. Some of the donations  were not properly disclosed at the time. Clinton also helped Guistra, who was once owned a company that merged with Uranium One, secure valuable uranium mining rights in Kazakhstan. Uranium One is one of the five largest uranium producers in the world. Mrs. Clinton should either have fulfilled her statutory duty or recused herself from a decision because her husband's financial interests created a personal conflict of interest. Gray said, "I think it is a smoking gun. By not acting, she helped. And the only way she could have avoided criminal liability was to recuse herself, which she did not. I think it is a clear violation of ethics statutes." (Source: Circa): http://tinyurl.com/j3k7ae2

August 23, 2016  A top priority of liberal billionaire Soros is to enlarge the U.S. electorate by 10 million voters by 2018, according to leaked documents. The plan to grow the electorate by millions of voters was discussed during a May 2014 board meeting of the Open Society Foundations, a liberal grant-making group founded by Soros. A 220-page guide detailing the plan was among more than 2,500 hacked Soros documents released by DC Leaks. The guide covers strategies and tactics the group will employ in the United States from 2015 to 2018. The top goals listed by the guide are to “advance electoral reform” and “combat suppression.” The third strategic goal expands upon this, calling for “Full political, economic, and civic participation of immigrants and communities of color by dismantling the barriers and strengthening the conduits to opportunity.” This would be accomplished “by lowering barriers to voter registration through the various forms of modernization and increased ballot access while sustaining and expanding the franchise by establishing strong protections against vote suppression, denial and dilution.” Soros began supporting challenges to voter ID laws in 2014. The campaign’s leader is Elias, a partner at the D.C-based law firm Perkins Coie and Mrs. Clinton’s top campaign lawyer. Clinton supports the effort. Soros dollars are doing all they can to fundamentally transform American elections. (Source: TheWashingtonFreeBeacon)

August 22, 2016  Biden said that despite the in-the-gutter relationship between Israel and the U.S. today, Netanyahu had enough trust in the vice president to ask him to help normalize his country’s relations with Turkey, which had ruptured in 2010. Biden took the mission, mediating between Netanyahu and Erdogan- himself not an uncomplicated leader. And it worked. The two countries signed a deal to normalize relations this summer. Netanyahu called the vice president thanking him for his role in making their rapprochement - and a potential natural-gas deal between the two countries - work. (Source: TheAtlantic)

August 22, 2016  Evidence points to another Snowden at the NSA. A group calling itself the Shadow Brokers put up for bid on the Internet what it called a “full state-sponsored toolset” of “cyberweapons.” “The draft of a top-secret NSA manual for implanting offensive malware, released by Snowden, contains code for a program codenamed SECONDDATE. That same 16-character string of numbers and characters is in the code released by the Shadow Brokers. The details from the manual were first released by The Intercept. The authenticity of the NSA hacking tools were confirmed by several ex-NSA officials. One former Tailored Access Operations (TAO) employee told the Washington Post. “The stuff you’re talking about would undermine the security of a lot of major government and corporate networks both here and abroad.” Cyber exploitation tools, with codenames like EPICBANANA and BUZZDIRECTION, are designed to break into computer systems and networks. The most valuable are “zero day” exploits, meaning there have been zero days since Windows has discovered the “crack” in their programs. It seems that an employee stole them. The files suspect that they date to October 2013, five months after Snowden left his contractor position with the NSA and fled to Hong Kong carrying flash drives containing hundreds of thousands of pages of NSA documents. In December 2013, another highly secret NSA document quietly became public. It was a top secret TAO catalog of NSA hacking tools. Known as the Advanced Network Technology (ANT) catalog, it consisted of 50 pages of extensive pictures, diagrams and descriptions of tools for every kind of hack, mostly targeted at devices manufactured by U.S. companies, including Apple, Cisco, Dell and many others. Among the tools targeting Apple was one codenamed DROPOUTJEEP, which gives NSA total control of iPhones. Another, codenamed IRATEMONK, is, “Technology that can infiltrate the firmware of hard drives manufactured by Maxtor, Samsung, Seagate and Western Digital.”  In fact, a number of the same hacking implants and tools released by the Shadow Brokers are also in the ANT catalog, including those with codenames BANANAGLEE and JETPLOW. These can be used to create “a persistent back-door capability” into widely used Cisco firewalls. Consisting of about 300 megabytes of code, the tools could easily and quickly be transferred to a flash drive. There also seems to be a link between Assange and the leaker who stole the ANT catalog, and the possible hacking tools. Among Assange’s close associates is Appelbaum, a celebrated hacktivist and the only publicly known WikiLeaks staffer in the United States - until he moved to Berlin in 2013. In December 2013, Appelbaum was the first person to reveal the existence of the ANT catalog, at a conference in Berlin, without identifying the source. He also co-wrote an article about the catalog in Der Spiegel. For years Appelbaum worked for Tor, an organization focused on providing its customers anonymity on the Internet. But last May, he stepped down as a result of “serious, public allegations of sexual mistreatment” made by unnamed victims, according to a statement put out by Tor. Shortly thereafter, he turned his attention to Mrs. Clinton. It was only a few months later that Assange released the 20,000 DNC emails. Intelligence agencies have again pointed the finger at Russia for hacking into these emails. Now Assange has promised to release many more emails before the election, while apparently ignoring email involving Trump. (Trump opposition research was also stolen) This new release of cyberweapons also seems to be targeting Clinton. “We want make sure Wealthy Elite recognizes the danger [of] cyberweapons. Let us spell out for Elites. Your wealth and control depends on electronic data.” Now, they warned, they have control of the NSA’s cyber hacking tools that can take that wealth away. Snowden’s leaks served a public good. He alerted Americans to illegal eavesdropping on their telephone records and other privacy violations, and Congress changed the law as a result. The DNC leaks exposed corrupt policies within the Democratic Party. But we now have entered a period many have warned about, when NSA’s cyber weapons could be stolen like loose nukes and used against us. It opens the door to criminal hackers, cyber anarchists and hostile foreign governments.  (Source: Reuters)

08/22/2016 If you only read the New York Times and Washington Post, you have no idea the Soros leak happened. Investor’s Business Daily wrote an editorial slamming the Times, CNN, CBS News and the Washington Post for remaining silent on the subject entirely. (Source: TheDailyCaller)

August 21, 2016  Abedin, Clinton’s top campaign aide, the woman who might be the future White House chief of staff to the first female US president, for a decade edited a radical Muslim publication, a Saudi propaganda organ, that opposed women’s rights and blamed the US for 9/11. She is Clinton’s longest-serving and, by all accounts, most loyal aide. The devout, Saudi-raised Muslim started working for her in the White House, then followed her to the Senate and later the State Department. The same one that in 1999 published a book, edited by her mother, that justifies the barbaric practice of female genital mutilation under Islamic law, while claiming “man-made laws have in fact enslaved women.” She was assistant editor of the Journal of Muslim Minority Affairs working under her mother, who remains editor-in-chief. She was also working in the White House as an intern for then-First Lady Clinton. Abedin’s journal was founded and funded by the former head of the Muslim World League. Abedin’s mother  was the Muslim World League’s delegate to the UN conference. Abedin continued to work for her mother’s journal through 2008. She is listed as “assistant editor” on the masthead of the 2002 issue in which her mother suggested the US was doomed to be attacked on 9/11 because of “sanctions” it leveled against Iraq and other “injustices” allegedly heaped on the Muslim world. If fighting for women’s rights is one of Clinton’s greatest achievements, why has she retained as her closest adviser a woman who gave voice to harsh Islamist critiques of her Beijing platform? 21 Aug 2016  New York Times tech columnist Manjoo is calling on Google to 'fix' its search engine results to hide evidence of Mrs. Clinton’s failing health. Clinton’s health is becoming a major issue in the campaign. She is still taking strong medications, such as the blood thinner Coumadin after she suffered a blood clot and concussion. Globalization
August 30, 2016  WHO estimates that each year, 131 million people are infected with chlamydia around the globe, 78 million with gonorrhoea and 5.6 million with syphilis. WHO urges shift in STD treatment due to antibiotic resistance. More than one million people contract a sexually transmitted infection (STI) every single day. Until recently, the three diseases, which are all caused by bacteria, had been fairly easy to treat using antibiotics, but increasingly those drugs are failing, WHO said. Strains of multidrug resistant gonorrhoea that do not respond to any available antibiotics have already been detected, while antibiotic resistance also exists in chlamydia and syphilis, though it is less common. The three diseases can have serious consequences, causing pelvic infamatory disease and ectopic pregnancy in women, and increasing the chances of miscarriage, stillbirth and newborn death. They can also greatly increase the risk of being infected with HIV, and untreated gonorrhoea and chlamydia can leave both men and women infertile. Condom use was the most effective way to protect against STD infection. (Source: MedicalPress): http://tinyurl.com/hzv9sbp

08/22/2016  The DCLeaks document dump is a major story because it exposes the forest of Soros’s funding networks. The first thing that we see is the megalomaniacal nature of Soros’s philanthropic project. No corner of the globe is unaffected by his efforts. No policy area is left untouched. On the surface, the vast number of groups and people he supports seem unrelated. After all, what does climate change have to do with illegal African immigration to Israel? What does Occupy Wall Street have to do with Greek immigration policies? But the fact is that Soros-backed projects share basic common attributes. They all work to weaken the ability of national and local authorities in Western democracies to uphold the laws and values of their nations and communities. They all work to hinder free markets, whether those markets are financial, ideological, political or scientific. They do so in the name of democracy, human rights, economic, racial and sexual justice and other lofty terms. In other words, their goal is to subvert Western democracies and make it impossible for governments to maintain order or for societies to retain their unique identities and values. Black Lives Matter, which has received $650,000 from Soros-controlled groups over the past year, is a classic example of these efforts. The demoralization and intimidation of police is very likely to cause a steep increase in violent crimes. Then there are Soros’s actions on behalf of illegal immigration. From the US to Europe to Israel, Soros has implemented a worldwide push to use immigration to undermine the national identity and demographic composition of Western democracies. The leaked emails show that his groups have interfered in European elections to get politicians elected who support open border policies for immigrants from the Arab world and to financially and otherwise support journalists who report sympathetically on immigrants. Soros’s groups are on the ground enabling illegal immigrants to enter the US and Europe. They have sought to influence US Supreme Court rulings on illegal immigration from Mexico. They have worked with Muslim and other groups to demonize Americans and Europeans who oppose open borders. In Israel as well, Soros opposes government efforts to end the flow of illegal immigration from Africa through the border with Egypt. Parallel to these efforts are others geared toward rejecting the right of Western democracies to uphold long-held social norms. Soros-supported groups, for instance, stand behind the push not only for gay marriage but for unisex public bathrooms. They support not only the right of women to serve in combat units, but efforts to force soldiers to live in unisex barracks. As far as Israel is concerned, Soros-backed groups work to delegitimize every aspect of Israeli society as racist and illegitimate. The Palestinians are focal point of his attacks. He uses them to claim that Israel is a racist state. Soros funds moderate leftist groups, radical leftist groups, Israeli Arab groups and Palestinian groups. In various, complementary ways, these groups tell their target audiences that Israel has no right to defend itself or enforce its laws toward its non-Jewish citizens. The thrust of Soros’s efforts from Ferguson to Berlin to Jerusalem is to induce mayhem and chaos as local authorities, paralyzed by his supported groups, are unable to secure their societies or even argue coherently that they deserve security. In many ways, Trump’s campaign is a direct response not to Clinton, but to Soros himself. By calling for the erection of a border wall, supporting Britain’s exit from the EU, supporting Israel, supporting a temporary ban on Muslim immigration and supporting the police against BLM, Trump acts as a direct foil to Soros’s multi-billion dollar efforts. The “direct democracy” movements that Soros support are nothing less than calls for mob rule. (Source: TheJerusalemPost)

Space
24th August 2016 Astronomers have discovered a “second Earth” orbiting our closest star and it could have exactly the right conditions to sustain alien lifeforms. Stargazers from the European Southern Observatory spotted the mystery world circling Proxima Centauri, a red dwarf star that’s just four light years away. Using current rocket technology, it would take 76,000 years to get to our nearest star. However, there is hope that “light sail” technology currently under development could allow us to send a robotic probe to the planet in about 25 years. Proxima Centauri is part of a triple system of stars in the constellation of Centaurus. It is the faintest of the three, which also include a much brighter pair of stars known as Alpha Centauri A and B. From Earth, the system appears as a single bright star – the third brightest visible in the night sky. Astronomers made the discovery, reported in the journal Nature, after studying Proxima Centauri using a special instrument on the 3.6-metre telescope operated by the European Southern Observatory at La Silla in Chile’s Atacama desert. 22 August 2016  A fleet of tiny satellites could one day be used to detonate plasma bombs in Earth’s upper atmosphere to improve the range of radio communications. The US Air Force has granted contracts to three research teams to develop the technology needed to do this, with hopes that CubeSats could carry massive amounts of ionized gas to the ionosphere to create radio-reflecting plasma. The ionosphere begins roughly 40 miles above the surface and becomes denser with charged particles at night, allowing signals to travel much farther. Researchers must develop a plasma generator small enough to fit on a CubeSat, and they must find a way to control how the plasma disperse once it’s been released. Ground-based radio signals are limited by the curvature of Earth’s surface, and those travelling more than about 44 miles are typically stopped if they aren’t given a boost. In one of the USAF-backed projects, researchers with General Science and Drexel University in Pennsylvania are working to develop a way to vaporize metal by heating it beyond its boiling point. This would allow it to react with atmospheric oxygen to produce radio-reflecting plasma. Another project from a team at Enig Associates and the University of Maryland plans to heat metal by detonating a small bomb, and converting the blast into electrical energy. In the past, researchers with the High Frequency Active Research Program in Alaska have attempted to create plasma using radiation from ground-based antennas to stimulate the ionosphere.
