Iraq
03 16 16  There are roughly 5 million children living under the so-called islamic state in Iraq and Syria. In Iisis-land, mothers are given books telling them how to raise their offspring for ‘jihad.’ This includes telling bedtime stories about ‘martyrdom.’ isis has created a youth wing called Fityan al-Islam, meaning boys of Islam. The precedent seems to have been set by the former Baathist regime of Hussain in Iraq. isis is now busy training and indoctrinating children en masse. isis has abducted between 800 and 900 children ranging between the ages of 9 and 15 from various regions of Mosul city and province. From last August to February, 254 instances of children being used in isis propaganda were found. Many are being trained as spies, preachers, soldiers, executioners, and suicide bombers. Were issued statements warning that children who refuse to conform with isis orders will be flogged, tortured, or raped. There are as many as 50 British children subjected to direct isis command and control. Some of these have been forced to carry out beheadings or hold up decapitated heads to show they are ready to embrace the “jihad.” The girls fair no better. In captivity young women and girls have been taken and raped on a daily basis by isis fighters. Most girls are being processed to be molded as wives and mothers of future soldiers. As if shaping an unborn army, estimated 31,000 women living under isis rule are pregnant. Parents have no choice but to comply with isis instructions to play a part in brutalizing their children. Mothers are given books by isis instructing them on how to raise their offspring for “jihad.” Using parents in this way is guaranteed to weaken any emotional resistance a child may naturally have to committing atrocities. What world leader could possibly authorize an airstrike on a training camp full of children?  (Source: TheDailyBeast): http://tinyurl.com/jmy93tq

Syria
Mar 16, 2016  Kurdish-controlled areas of northern Syria are expected to declare a federal system. The step that will combine three Kurdish-led autonomous areas of northern Syria into a federal system will be sure to alarm neighbouring Turkey. The areas would be named the Federation of northern Syria, and represent all ethnic groups living there. The Syrian Kurdish PYD party has been left out of peace talks underway in Geneva, in line with the  wishes of Turkey, which sees it as an extension of the PKK group that is waging an insurgency in southeastern Turkey. The powerful Syrian Kurdish YPG militia has captured large areas of northeastern Syria from islamic state, and has been the most effective partner on the ground for a U.S.-led air campaign against the jihadists. Syrian Kurds effectively control an uninterrupted stretch of 400 km along the Syrian-Turkish border from the frontier with Iraq to the Euphrates river. They also control a separate section of the northwestern border in the Afrin area. Syria's government in Damascus ruled out the idea of a federal model for the country. Damascus ally Russia has said federalism could be a possible model for Syria. (Source: Reuters)

March 15, 2016  How a monstrous Putin beat the U.S. in Syria. The president, like most European heads of state, lives in a 21st century, post-power world where international law is more meaningful than brute force. Putin, by contrast, inhabits a 19th century, Realpolitik world where strongmen act to advance their own interests with scant regard for the feelings of other states, much less of multilateral institutions such as the G20 or the United Nations. In the clash between these two incompatible visions of the world, there is no doubt which one is winning: from Crimea to Syria, Putin is rewriting the rules of the international game in his favor. In the case of Syria, Putin's objectives are two-fold. First, he wants to ensure that Assad, a longtime Russian ally (and buyer of Russian weapons), is not toppled. Last fall, rebel forces were advancing and threatening Assad's grip on power. No longer. The Russian intervention was ostensibly supposed to attack islamic state. In fact, some 90% of Russian sorties have been directed not at its strongholds but at more moderate rebel groups backed by the United States. This has enabled Assad to regain part of Aleppo province and to consolidate his hold on an eastern corridor running from Damascus to the Mediterranean Sea. Putin's second objective is to reassert Russian power in the world — to make clear that Russia is not isolated after the unlawful invasion of Ukraine and that, in fact, it is ready to challenge American primacy in the Middle East, a region where the U.S. has been the dominant power for decades. If Assad gets into trouble again, it's easy enough for Putin to send back more Russian forces. He is not, after all, giving up the newly established Russian airbase in Latakia province. It will now be Russia's second military installation abroad, alongside the long-standing Russian port facility nearby at Tartus on the Syrian coast.(Source: LosAngelesTimes): http://tinyurl.com/hzq5e3q

March 14, 2016  Putin orders ‘main part’ of Russian army to start Syria pullout, a surprise partial withdrawal. Russian leader says objectives met of boosting peace efforts. Russia has urged the Syrian leader to be “constructive” during the latest round of peace talks. Russia’s intervention in Syria swung the war in favor of Assad’s forces, which have made major advances against rebel groups in strategically important regions since the bombing raids started in September. The Syrian presidency said on Twitter that Russia had promised to continue supporting Syria’s fight against terrorism. Syria’s regime is so far indicating that it will only accept a limited role for the opposition in government, and that discussing Assad’s position is a “red line.” Peskov declined to comment on how many troops will remain, whether S-400 anti-aircraft defense missiles will be withdrawn and whether Russian air strikes will end. March 12, 2016  islamic state leaders have made sexual slavery as they believe it was practiced during the Prophet Muhammad’s time integral to the group’s operations, preying on the women and girls the group captured from the Yazidi religious minority almost two years ago. Thousands of women and girls from the Yazidi minority remain captives of the islamic state, after the jihadists overran their ancestral homeland on Mount Sinjar on Aug. 3, 2014. In the months since then, hundreds have managed to escape, returning to a community now living in tents in the plains of the yellow massif, hours from their former homes. In its official publications, the islamic state has stated that it is legal for a man to rape the women he enslaves under just about any circumstance. Even sex with a child is permissible, according to a pamphlet published by the group. The islamic state cites centuries-old rulings stating that the owner of a female slave can have sex with her only after she has undergone 'istibra’ — the process of ensuring that the womb is empty. In other conflicts where rape has been used as a weapon of war, it has led to waves of unwanted pregnancies — either because the attackers did not use birth control or, as was the case in the former Yugoslavia, because they purposefully tried to impregnate their victims. One medical study of 68 Croatian and Bosnian rape victims found that 29 had become pregnant. With more than 700 cases of rape recorded so far, Dr. Taib’s center has treated only 35 pregnancies. He expected to see at least 140. “Even higher than that, if you consider that these women had multiple partners and were raped every day over many months". The rapists used contraception. Turkey
March 18, 2016  Erdogan’s war. Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has many scapegoats in mind for the rise in violence. But it should also accept a share of the responsibility. The party’s unwillingness to complete the peace and disarmament process with the militant Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), its suppression of individual liberties, press freedom, and freedom of speech, its contempt for parliamentary democracy and its embrace of authoritarian rule, its determination to polarize society, its disregard for the law, its dismissal of every criticism as treason, its reckless support of extremists in Syria — all of this has contributed to the dismal state of the country today. Rather than taking a look in the mirror, however, the government is determined to stifle its critics with a new wave of repression. More divided than ever, Turkey is one step away from collective suicide. The economy, which used to be the strongest argument for the AKP, is in dire straits. The tourism industry has ground to a virtual halt as Europeans and Russians cancel their reservations. Relations with the country’s neighbors and traditional allies have fallen to new lows. The regime considers Russia, Syria, Iran, Israel, and Armenia enemies, and views both the United States and the EU with deep suspicion. Turkey has returned to civil war. In July, as part of its effort to gain nationalist votes, the government broke off its peace negotiations with the PKK (they were likely torpedoed outright by the president). Using the end of the peace process as an excuse, the PKK resumed its terror attacks, destroying any remaining hopes for a peaceful resolution to the country’s conflict with the Kurds. Long-term military curfews to turn several Kurdish cities into virtual prisons. According to an International Crisis Group report, the government imposed curfews in 59 cities experiencing Kurdish separatist activity since last summer. Life in many communities in the country’s southeast has virtually ground to a halt. More than a quarter of the population in these cities has been internally displaced. Turkish Health Minister Muezzinoglu put the number of displaced people at 355,000. The gruesome images from these cities resemble Dresden after the Second World War. The United States is also walking a thin line to keep the Turkish government on its side in the war against the islamic state. Given the AKP government’s annoyance at American support for the PKK’s Syrian affiliate, which it considers a terrorist group, Washington does not want to antagonize its NATO ally further. This helps to explain why a significant and growing number of Kurds believe that Kurdish lives don’t matter. The AKP government’s neo-Ottoman fantasies, combined with its nationalistic and sectarian Sunni Islam ideology, have torn the country apart. Today Turkey has become an exporter of instability and civil war. (Source: ForeignPolicy): http://tinyurl.com/jstlwln

17 March 2016 A radical Kurdish group with ties to Turkey's outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) claimed the deadly suicide car bomb attack that killed 35 people in Ankara on March 13. The group, known as the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), said the attack was a response to security operations by Turkish forces in the Kurdish-dominated southeast of the country. The TAK also claimed a similar car bombing that killed 29 people in Ankara in mid-February. (Source: Stratfor)

March 16, 2016  China and Russia are preparing to attack and disrupt critical U.S. military and intelligence satellites in a future conflict with crippling space missile, maneuvering satellite, and laser attacks -  Air Force Gen. Hyten, commander of the Air Force Space Command said in the budget hearing for military space efforts. Disrupting the satellites time capabilities would degrade the military’s ability to conduct precision strike operations used in most weapons systems today. Hyten said a new joint military-intelligence command center is helping to monitor space threats, such as anti-satellite missile launches, covert killer robot satellites, and ground-fired lasers that can blind or disrupt satellites. The unit is called the Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center, located at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado. The Space Command also is creating 39 cyber mission teams that will be used for defensive and offensive cyber operations involving space systems. China in December created its first dedicated space warfare and cyber warfare unit, called the Strategic Support Forces, for concentrating their “space, electronic, and network warfare capabilities. China is developing, and has demonstrated, a wide range of counter-space technologies to include direct-ascent, kinetic-kill vehicles, co-orbital technologies that can disable or destroy a satellite, terrestrially-based communications jammers, and lasers that can blind or disable satellites.
The subcommittee held a closed-door session after the public hearing. The growing commercial space sector is expected to deploy hundreds of new satellites in the coming years that could be used as back up systems for the Pentagon in a conflict. An advanced U.S. satellite might cost upwards of $1 billion; missiles that could destroy such a satellite cost a few percent of that sum; co-orbital microsatellites cost even less; and lasers that might blind or damage satellites have an unlimited magazine with almost zero cost per shot. Calvelli, deputy director of the National Reconnaissance Office, the spy agency that builds and operates strategic intelligence and reconnaissance satellites, said a resurgent Russia and aggressive China are among several current national security threats. He revealed that the agency in October launched a new satellite that carried 13 smaller “CubeSats.” Among the missions of the CubeSats are software-defined radios “to provide beyond-line-of-sight communication for disadvantaged users in remote locations, and technology pathfinders to demonstrate tracking technologies, optical communications, and laser communication. Weatherington, director of unmanned warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance at the Pentagon, said eight national security satellites were launched in 2015, including tactical and strategic communications, navigation, position, and timing satellites. The Pentagon currently has 19 military-capable GPS satellites on orbit and a new generation of GPS satellites is being developed that will produce signals three times stronger than current system to be able to overcome electronic jamming. The officials at the hearing also discussed plans to transition from the sole reliance on the use of Russian-made RD-180 rocket engines to launch national security satellites. A new U.S. made engine, however, will not be fully developed until 2022 or 2023. (Source: TheWashingtonFreeBeacon)

March 15, 2016  Lockheed hails progress on hypersonic military aircraft that could lead to the US developing military aircraft that can fly six times the speed of sound. We estimate the hypersonic aircraft will cost less than $1bn to develop, build, and fly a demonstrator aircraft the size of an F-22 - Hewson, Lockheed’s chief executive, outlined. (Source: FT)

March 14, 2016   U.S. intelligence community that once forced out gays and lesbians for security reasons now sees inclusivity as the best way to protect the country, and seeks to recruit spies from a wider talent pool that includes the LGBT community at a session titled America’s LGBT Spies (Secret Agents of Change) held at the South by Southwest tech summit in Austin, Texas. The U.S. intelligence community - with a $60 billion-plus budget and more than 100,000 employees - to attract the best talent, it must embrace diversity. (Source: Yahoo)

March 14, 2016  Supercomputers might take over for entrepreneurs, using their digital brains to create things faster than humans. Kittlaus later this year will unveil Viv, an open source and cloud-based personal assistant that will allow humans “to talk to the Internet” and have the Internet talk back. Viv will be a giant brain in the sky. Sabatini said that as we understand more about our genetic makeup – of which “only about 1% is clear to us” – there will be the opportunity not only to check for potential diseases before they ravage the body, but also to genetically modify a future human to have more appealing traits. Call it man-made Darwinism. Specifically, Sabatini said that it is possible based on current genetic sequencing to see what lines of our human code correspond to not just physical features, but also to so-called superpowers that include the ability to sleep just three hours the night and see well in the dark. And a rogue scientist or state manipulating the genes in fertilized eggs to create a race of superbabies -  these are the worst ideas we can have. The decisions must be made collectively as humans.  (Source: USAToday): http://tinyurl.com/zv7g3dl

March 12, 2016  Soros funded MoveOn.org takes credit for violence in Chicago. Sheyman, a failed Illinois contender for Congress and the executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, has taken credit for the violence at a cancelled Trump event last night in Chicago. He promised similar violence and disruption will occur at future Trump political events leading up to the election. MoveOn has consistently functioned as a lobby group for the policies of the Obama administration, including the disaster of Obamacare and the continuation of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the escalation of the war on terror that has turned America into a police and surveillance state. The group acts as a front for wealthy Democrats. It was founded with the help of the financier Soros who donated $1.46 million to get the organization rolling. The violent demonstration in Chicago on March 11 may represent a precursor to the sort of activity the organization will engage in as it tries to “shut down” its political enemies and elect either Clinton or Sanders. March 14, 2016  'Unprecedented UN global data gathering to add huge amounts of information for governments to collect. Among the relatively novel measurements the draft framework proposes to develop: The “proportion of government recurrent and capital spending going to sectors that disproportionately benefit women, poor and vulnerable groups”;  The “extent to which global citizenship education and education for sustainable development . . . are mainstreamed at all levels in national education politics, curricula, teacher education and student assessment”;  The “number of countries that have implemented well-managed migration policies”;  The “average income of small-scale food producers, by sex and indigenous status”; The “proportion of persons victim of physical or sexual harassment, by sex, age, disability status and place of occurrence, in the previous 12 months”; The “mortality rate attributed to unintentional poisoning”; The “proportion of national Exclusive Economic Zones [200-mile ocean limits] managed using ecosystem-based approaches”; The “number of plant and animal genetic resources for food and agriculture secured in either medium or long-term conservation facilities”; “Progress by countries in the degree of implementation of international instruments aiming to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing”. Globalization
March 14, 2016  How gut bacteria are shaking up cancer research? Nestle SA last January invested $65 million in Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Seres Therapeutics Inc., which is developing a treatment for Clostridium difficile, which affects the digestive system. That follows early efforts to harness the microbiome’s benefits, which spawned probiotic foods and supplements as well as transplants of healthy bacteria. Vedanta Biosciences, a Boston-based startup last year announced a license agreement with Johnson & Johnson on its experimental microbiome drug for inflammatory bowel disease. Another startup, 4D Pharma Plc, in November said it had discovered a bacterium that produces a response comparable to that of an immunotherapy in animal tests for breast and lung cancers. The London-listed company plans to start trials in patients by the end of this year. To support research in autoimmune and neurological diseases, in addition to cancer, the company has raised over 100 million pounds ($140 million) from investors over the last two years. French biotech Enterome is taking a different approach: developing treatments based on bacterial secretions. (Source: Bloomberg): http://tinyurl.com/jma3vny
