Kárpát-medence
2017. IV. 10. A Kárpát-medence déli térségének gazdag, de még kihasználatlan, mély geotermikus forrásainak fenntartható és energia-hatékony felhasználását szolgáló projekt indult, a Duna Transznacionális Program által finanszírozott DARLINGe (Danube Region Leading Geothermal Energy) projekt. Nyitórendezvényét a Magyar Földtani és Geofizikai Intézet (MFGI) székházában tartották meg hat ország mintegy 100 képviselőjének részvételével. A 2017 januárjától 2019 júniusáig zajló program megvalósulását az Európai Regionális Fejlesztési Alap és az Előcsatlakozási Támogatási Eszköz összesen 2 millió 147 ezer euro-val támogatja. A közel 95 000 négyzetkilométer nagyságú projektterület Magyarország déli részeit, Északkelet-Szlovéniát, Horvátország, Bosznia-Hercegovina és Szerbia északi részeit, valamint Románia nyugati tartományait foglalja magában. Ezen a területen – ahogy a Duna Régió más térségeiben is – a primer energiafelhasználás megközelítőleg 40 százalékát teszi ki a főként oroszországi import gáz, amelyet fűtésre használnak.A DARLINGe projekttel a termálvíz kedvezőbb és gazdaságosabb felhasználását szeretnék elősegíteni a geotermikus táv- és városfűtési rendszerek, egyedi épületfűtések, mezőgazdasági alkalmazások és a kaszkád-rendszerek (csökkenő hőigényű felhasználások sorba kötése) számára, illetve, hogy a balneológiai hasznosítások során az elfolyó víz maradék hőenergiáját hatékonyabban használják fel. 2017. (IV. 10.)

Tuesday, April 4, 2017  Hungarian lawmakers approved legislation that could force the closure of a Budapest university founded by US billionaire investor Soros. The English-language Central European University (CEU), set up in 1991 after the fall of communism, has long been seen as a hostile bastion of liberalism by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's government. MPs in the 199-seat parliament, dominated by Orbán's Fidesz party, voted 123 in favour and 38 against the legislation affecting foreign universities operating in Hungary. The new rules ban institutions outside the European Union from awarding Hungarian diplomas without an agreement between national governments. They will also be required to have a campus and faculties in their home country - conditions not met by the CEU. Failure to comply would mean the CEU could not accept new student intakes from 2018, and possibly close by 2021. The CEU said it would contest the constitutionality of the bill. Soros, 86, is often accused by Orbán of seeking to undermine Europe by backing open borders and pro-refugee policies. Orbán said yesterday the future of the CEU depends on the conclusion of a treaty between the governments of Hungary and the United States within the next six months. The right-wing strongman has accused the university of "cheating" and of having an "unfair advantage" over local institutions. Registered in New York state, the CEU teaches over 1,400 students from more than 100 predominantly central and eastern European, as well as post-Soviet Union nations. It ranks among the top 200 universities in the world in eight disciplines, including top 50 rankings in political science and international studies. More than 5,000 people staged a protest around its downtown Budapest campus. Sunday's march drew an estimated 10,000 demonstrators. Within five days, President Áder must either sign the legislation into force or order a review by the constitutional court. A law clamping down on foreign-funded non-governmental organisations, including many by Soros, is expected to go before Parliament later this month. (Source: Yahoo)

April 2, 2017  Hungarians take to the streets to support Soros’s University. The demonstration was part of burgeoning opposition against a bill proposed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government last week, which would tighten regulations on foreign universities. CEU has said the bill was “targeted, discriminatory and punitive” and aimed at driving it out of the country, a charge the government has denied. Orbán, a frequent critic of Soros and his focus on funding organizations promoting human rights and government transparency, has pledged to eradicate liberal democracy in the European Union member state. The U.S. urges Hungary to “avoid taking any legislative action that would compromise CEU’s operations or independence,” State Department acting spokesperson Toner said in a March 31 statement. CEU, in an email Sunday, said 17 Nobel laureates were among thousands that have signed petitions pledging their support for the institution, which Soros established in 1991 to train a new generation of leaders committed to democracy following the fall of the Iron Curtain. Hungary’s Parliament, where Orban’s lawmakers have a commanding majority, is scheduled to start debating the education bill on Wednesday, according to an agenda posted on the legislature’s website. / by Simon  (Source: Bloomberg)

2017. IV. 1. Határozat amelyet az Ausztriai Szudétanémet Szövetség  (SLÖ) szövetségi közgyűlése hozott. A Beneš-dekrétumok jogtalansága. 1940. augusztus 21.

2017. IV. 7.  Alapfokon 10 hónap és 8 nap, illetve 11 hónap és 6 nap letöltendő börtönbüntetésre ítélte a Bukaresti Ítélőtábla Szőcsöt és Bekét. A vádak egy része alól felmentették őket. A Hatvannégy Vármegye Ifjúsági Mozgalom erdélyi, illetve kézdivásárhelyi szervezetének vezetőjét azzal vádolták, hogy házi készítésű bombát akartak robbantani Kézdivásárhely főterén 2015-ben, a román nemzeti ünnepre szervezett december elsejei katonai parádé közben. Hiszen Romániában is kötelező a védőoltás, ennek ellenére a négy éven aluli gyermekek mintegy fele nincs beoltva kanyaró ellen.  (HetiVálasz)

Russia    Oroszország
April 09, 2017  The world of New York real estate isn’t that huge either. Two decades ago, as the Russian president set about consolidating power on one side of the world, he embarked on a project to supplant his country’s existing Jewish civil society and replace it with a parallel structure loyal to him. The purpose was to undermine the existing umbrella for Russia’s Jewish civil society, the Russian Jewish Congress, led by oligarch Gusinsky. A year later, Gusinsky was arrested and forced into exile. At the time, Russia had a chief rabbi as recognized by the Russian Jewish Congress, Shayevich. Starting in 1999, Putin enlisted two of his closest confidants, the oligarchs Leviev and Abramovich, who would go on to become Chabad’s biggest patrons worldwide, to create the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia under the leadership of Chabad rabbi Lazar, who would come to be known as “Putin’s rabbi.” The Kremlin removed Shayevich from its religious affairs council, and ever since it has instead recognized Lazar as Russia’s chief rabbi, leaving the country with two rival claimants to the title. The Putin-Chabad alliance has reaped benefits for both sides. Under Putin, anti-Semitism has been officially discouraged, a break from centuries of discrimination and pogroms, and the government has come to embrace a state-sanctioned version of Jewish identity as a welcome part of the nation. Lazar has escorted the Russian leader to Jerusalem’s Western Wall and attended the opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics, Putin’s project, on the Jewish Sabbath. In 2013, a $50 million Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center opened in Moscow under the auspices of Chabad and with funding from Abramovich. Putin donated a month of his salary to the project, while the Federal Security Service, the successor to the KGB, pitched in by offering relevant documents from its archives. In 2014, Lazar was the only Jewish leader present at Putin’s triumphal announcement of the annexation of Crimea. Since then, his continued support has caused a rift with Chabad leaders in Ukraine. And for years, the Russian government has defied an American court order to turn over a trove of Chabad texts called the “Schneerson Library” to the Chabad Lubavitch headquarters in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Lazar is the custodian of the prized collection that his Brooklyn comrades believe is rightfully theirs. The Chabad attitude is less strict than the Orthodox one; offers possibility for people who don’t want to go the full Orthodox route but do want to stay on the traditional spectrum. Founded in Lithuania in 1775, the Chabad-Lubavitch movement has adherents numbering in the five, or perhaps six, figures. Despite its small size, Chabad has grown to become the most sprawling Jewish institution in the world, with a presence in over 1,000 far-flung cities, including locales like Kathmandu and Hanoi with few full-time Jewish residents. The movement is known for these outposts, called Chabad houses, which function as community centers and are open to all Jews. In the former Soviet Union during the first years of this century Trump would seek out Russian projects and capital by joining forces with a partnership called Bayrock-Sapir, led by Soviet emigres Arif, Sater and Sapir — who maintain close ties to Chabad. The company’s ventures would lead to multiple lawsuits alleging fraud and a criminal investigation of a condo project in Manhattan. Arif, a former Soviet bureaucrat turned wealthy real estate developer, owns a mansion in Port Washington, an upscale suburb, but he makes a curious patron for the town’s Chabad. A Kazakh-born citizen of Turkey with a Muslim name, Arif is not Jewish. In 2010, he was arrested in a raid on a yacht in Turkey and charged with running an international underage prostitution ring. Arif was later cleared of the charges. Before the scandal, Arif partnered closely with Trump, Ivanka and Sater in the development of Trump SoHo along with the Sapir family, a New York real estate dynasty and the other half of Bayrock-Sapir. Its patriarch, the late billionaire Sapir, was born in the Soviet state of Georgia and arrived in 1976 in New York, where he opened an electronics store which according to the New York Times, catered largely to KGB agents. The links between Trump and Chabad kept piling up. In 2006, Sater escorted Trump’s children Ivanka and Don Jr. around Moscow to scour the city for potential projects, and he worked especially closely with Ivanka on the development of Trump SoHo, a hotel and condominium building in Manhattan whose construction was announced in 2006. In 2007, Trump hosted the wedding of Sapir’s daughter and Leviev’s right-hand man at Mar-a-Lago, his Palm Beach resort. The groom, Rosen, was the CEO of the American branch of Africa Israel, the Putin oligarch Leviev’s holding company. A few months after Leviev met Trump to discuss potential deals in Moscow and then hosted a bris for the new couple’s first son at the holiest site in Chabad Judaism in early June 2008. Invitations to the bris held by Zina and Rosen described Rosen as Leviev’s “right-hand man.” By then, Leviev had become the single largest funder of Chabad worldwide. Trump, who a month earlier, in May 2008 had met Leviev, attended the bris along with Kushner, who would go on to buy a $295 million majority stake in the old New York Times building on West 43rd Street from Leviev and marry Ivanka, who would form a close relationship with Abramovich’s wife, Zhukova. Kushner’s family, which is Modern Orthodox, has long been highly engaged in philanthropy across the Jewish world, including to Chabad entities. Abramovich, an industrialist worth more than $7 billion, the owner of the British soccer club Chelsea FC, the former governor of the Russian province of Chukotka, there is still revered as a hero. In 2006, Abramovich purchased a large stake in the Russian oil giant Rosneft. He owes his fortune to his triumphant emergence from Russia’s post-Soviet “aluminum wars,” in which more than 100 people are estimated to have died in fighting over control of aluminum refineries. In 2011, his former business partner, the late Berezovsky — an oligarch who had fallen out with Putin and gone on to live in exile at the Trump International on Central Park West — accused him of threats, blackmail and intimidation in a lawsuit in the United Kingdom, which Abramovich won. According to a 2012 report, Evraz, a firm partly owned by Abramovich, has contracts to provide 40 percent of the steel for the Keystone XL pipeline, a project whose completion was approved by Trump in March after years of delay. Abramovich's wife, Zhukova, friend and business partner of Murdoch’s ex-wife Wendi Deng would host the power couple Ivanka-Kushner in Russia in 2014 and reportedly attended Trump’s inauguration as their guest. 6 April 2017 In an unexpected, unprecedented and curious move, Moscow said it considers West Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital, making Russia the first country in the world to extend such a recognition to any part of the city. “We reaffirm our commitment to the UN-approved principles for a Palestinian-Israeli settlement, which include the status of East Jerusalem as the capital of the future Palestinian state. At the same time, we must state that in this context we view West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” the Foreign Ministry in Moscow said in a statement. April 4, 2017  Towards St. Petersburg” for a parade on July 30. TK-208 (Dmitry Donskoy) is the only remaining Typhoon-class submarine in operation. The 172 meter long giant was originally built to assure the Soviet Union’s ability to respond to a nuclear attack with a powerful retaliation. Carrying 20 missiles and up to 200 nuclear warheads, the sub could stay hidden under the Arctic ice cap and assure a second-strike against the attacker…The heavy missile submarine will sail out of the White Sea, across the Barents Sea on a voyage that continues along the coast of Norway, into the North Sea and Skagerak outside Denmark, and further across the Baltic Sea between Poland, Sweden and the Baltic States, before heading in to the Gulf of Finland towards St. Petersburg”. 3 April 2017  Nail bomb kills at least ten and injures 50 on St Petersburg metro after 'terrorist' throws backpack onto train moments before shrapnel rips through carriages on the day Putin visits the city and is expected to hold talks with the Belarusian president later in the day..Two nail bombs exploded. Metro officials reported blast was from an improvised explosive device on board which included shrapnel. At least 12 people are reported to have been killed by the blast and 50 including children have been injured. The country's security services have previously said they had foiled 'terrorist attacks' on Moscow's public transport system by militants. In the past, deadly raids have been carried out by Chechen militants with rebel leaders threatening further attacks. Chechnya was the scene of two separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, but violence in the region has largely been suppressed under the iron-fisted rule of strongman leader Kadyrov. Putin, as prime minister, launched a 1999 campaign to crush a separatist government in the Muslim southern region of Chechnya, and as president continued a hard line in suppressing rebellion. Over the weekend, Russia said it had detained one of the attackers who carried out a deadly strike on a military base in Chechnya. A 21-year-old local man has been held over last week's attack, in which six soldiers and six rebels died. isis claimed responsibility for the March 24 attack, which targeted a base of Russia's National Guard, a new branch of troops which answers directly to President Putin and is tasked with defending borders  and counter extremism. islamic state supporters have celebrated the explosions in St Petersburg saying it was revenge for Syrian air strikes. 2017. IV. 3.

April 2, 2017 For signs of Russia’s geopolitical resurgence, look no further than Hungary. Russian President Putin’s 2015 visit there was a quiet affair. At the time, Putin was coming under intense international pressure for his annexation of Crimea. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was the first European leader to host Putin after the invasion. In an effort to deepen energy cooperation, Moscow extended a ten billion euro loan to Budapest to finance the Russian state firm Rosatom’s expansion of the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in central Hungary, which supplies 40 percent of Hungary’s electricity. When Putin travelled to Hungary again this February, it was under more triumphal circumstances. Standing next to the Russian president, Orbán spoke about a world “in the process of substantial realignment.” Before he left, Putin had agreed to finance the entire Paks project. Moscow’s offer to Budapest was not a one-off deal; it was a material display of Russia’s emerging nuclear diplomacy. Russia stands to benefit most from the developing world’s increasing appetite for nuclear power. Rosatom currently has export orders valued at more than $300 billion - 60 percent of the overall market - for 34 plants in 13 countries. In the near future, Russia could find itself with more allies and the United States with fewer. (Source: ForeignAffairs): http://tinyurl.com/ya3xa5lu

Egypt
9 April 2017  Worshippers celebrating Palm Sunday were targeted by isis terrorists with suicide bombs. At least 27 people were killed in Tanta while a further dozen died in Alexandria earlier today. Three officers died at St Mark's Cathedral while preventing bomber from entering church. Egyptian President Sissi has decided to declare a state of emergency for three months. Approximately ten per cent of the Egyptian population are Christian and have been targeted several times by isis terrorists. In the first attack, a bomb went off inside St. George's Church in the Nile Delta city of Tanta, killing at least 27 people and wounding 78, officials said. The attack on St. Mark's Cathedral, in the coastal city of Alexandria, the historic seat of Christendom in Egypt, happened a few hours later and killed at least 16 people and wounding 41, the Interior Ministry said. The service was being broadcast live on Egyptian television when the blast happened. Isis claimed the attacks. Egypt's Copts are one of the oldest Christian communities in the Middle East. They have long complained of discrimination and that the government does not do enough to protect them. (Source: DailyMail)

India
1 April 2017  The villagers of North Sentinel Island, located between India and Burma, fired arrows at a passing camera crew who tried to document their way of living from the sea and air. Little else is known about them because of their hostility to outsiders. The island separates the Bay of Bengal from the Andaman Sea and has been left to function as an independent community by neighbouring countries in south-east Asia. (Source: TheSun)

Iran
9th April 2017  Russia and Iran have said they will respond to further American military actions following the air strike in Syria last week. In a joint statement, the command centre for the two countries and allied groups said “we will respond to any aggression”. The statement read: “What America waged in an aggression on Syria is a crossing of red lines. From now on we will respond with force to any aggressor or any breach of red lines from whoever it is and America knows our ability to respond well.” The Iranian leader, a key ally of Syria’s dictator Assad, called yesterday for an impartial investigation into the chemical attack that killed at least 70 people. Philippines
April 6, 2017  Philippines President Duterte said he has ordered military personnel to occupy all Philippines-claimed islands in the disputed South China Sea. "We tried to be friends with everybody but we have to maintain our jurisdiction now, at least the areas under our control. And I have ordered the armed forces to occupy all these," he said during a visit to a military camp on the Philippines island of Palawan. In a visit to the Chinese capital in October, Duterte said to Chinese President Xi that "America has lost now. I've realigned myself in your ideological flow." Following his visit, Beijing agreed to allow Philippines fishing ships access to China-controlled territory.  Duterte's latest comments suggests a desire to pursue the type of militarization Beijing has been accused of bringing to the region. China has continued militarizing and building up the territories it controls, reclaiming land to turn sandbars into islands, and equipping them with airfields, ports and weapons systems. April 5, 2017   Alleged chemical weapons attack in northwestern Idlib province killed dozens and wounded many more. Last week, the Trump administration signaled that it had no intention of forcing Assad’s removal. But State Secretary Tillerson, along with most of the world, blamed Assad, coming to Assad’s support Moscow’s position that the chemical weapons reported in the attack belonged to rebels and exploded only after the airstrike landed near a rebel weapons. United States
Apr 9, 2017  President Trump and Chinese President Xi have agreed to a new 100-day plan for trade talks. China will offer the Trump administration better market access for financial sector investments and U.S. beef exports to help avert a trade war. (Source: Reuters)

April 5, 2017  President Trump's decision to remove chief strategist Bannon from the National Security Council's principals committee suggests a potentially significant change in the power balance among the four top White House advisers. He was widely regarded in the early days of the administration as a first among equals in a group that included chief of staff Priebus, counselor Conway and son-in-law Kushner. That suggest that the president is moving away (at least for the moment) from the more hard-line ideological bent of Bannon. (Source: CNN)

April 5, 2017  Even as Mr. Bannon lost a national security credential, Kushner, the president’s son-in-law and senior adviser, seems to be acting as a shadow secretary of state, visiting Iraq and taking on China, Mexico and Middle East portfolios. Yet there is a risk for Mr. Trump in appearing to minimize Mr. Bannon, a hero to the nationalist, anti-immigration base that helped drive Mr. Trump to an Electoral College victory. Apr 5, 2017  For years, at leadership summits and global conferences, the United States pushed a reluctant China to open its markets and embrace free trade. When the United States abandoned an Asia-Pacific free-trade pact in January, China intensified efforts to persuade countries to join its version of a regional trade accord.

Apr 5, 2017  Now, as President Trump prepares to host his Chinese counterpart, Xi, at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, a reversal of sorts has emerged: It's the U.S. leader who is seen as an unpredictable wild card and a skeptic of free-trade deals - and it's China that is casting itself as a champion of rules-based global trade.Trump, by contrast, has rejected any notion that free trade can work and last week warned that America's vast trade deficit in goods with China - $347 billion last year, nearly half the total U.S. trade gap in goods - was unacceptable. On the campaign trail, Trump threatened to impose a 45 percent tariff on Chinese imports as punishment for what he called abusive trade practices. China hinted that it would retaliate by restricting sales of U.S. goods. A trade war between the world's two biggest economies - together they account for nearly 40 percent of the world's economic output - could damage commerce and slow growth. As a candidate, Trump pledged to brand China a currency manipulator on his first day in the White House. He didn't. Instead, the new president bowed to the prolonged process by which the Treasury Department decides whether any countries deserve to be publicly shamed for deliberately undervaluing their currencies to gain an unfair trade advantage. China protects key industries, especially involving such services as telecommunications and finance, where state-owned firms dominate. Trump has repeatedly suggested that there is a link between vaccines and autism  -  a widely discredited theory. (Source: AP)

April 4, 2017  The U.S. Air Force, under pressure from Congress to take more seriously a potential war in space, is creating a new job for a three-star general and making other organizational changes to meet what many see as a growing  threat. The new general will serve as a space advisor on staff with the Air Force secretary and chief of staff. Three-star generals already advise Air Force leaders about personnel, intelligence, operations, plans, requirements, logistics, communications, studies, and nuclear weapons. Staff three-stars also represent the four-star generals who run major commands around the world, like a liaison. The Air Force last added a general to the Air Staff in 2008 to oversee nuclear weapons after a series of embarrassing incidents. Along with the new general’s job, the Air Force announced a series of other changes it would make in space. The service is creating a “space warfighting construct.” The Air Force is working with National Reconnaissance Office, or NRO, to build CONOPS, a description of how a system would be used in battle, for space as a warfighting domain. Meanwhile, the Pentagon’s space war command center, the rather obscure Joint Interagency Combined Space Operations Center, is getting a new name: the National Space Defense Center. April 4, 2017  U.S. President Trump's first move to curtail funding for the United Nations: the State Department said it was ending U.S. funding for the United Nations Population Fund, the international body's agency focused on family planning as well as maternal and child health in more than 150 countries, because the U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) "supports, or participates in the management of, a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization."  U.N. agencies such as the UNFPA are funded by governments voluntarily. The United States was the fourth-largest voluntary donor to UNFPA in 2015, giving $75 million in core budget and earmarked contributions. U.N. officials have warned that abrupt funding cuts could trigger more global instability. (Source: Yahoo)

April 3, 2017   Trump hosts Egyptian President Sisi at the White House. Egypt and America are destined to disappoint each other. Sisi’s supporters in Washington are about to get mugged by reality: His regime is alarmingly weak. A collapsing economy could lead to state failure on a scale as yet unseen elsewhere in the region. President Sisi knows this and comes to Washington grasping for a lifeline from the Americans. (Source: DefenseOne): https://tinyurl.com/kyflcgq

03 April 2017  Trump started choosing his team. Some appointees were less terrifying than others. Former ExxonMobil chief Tillerson at least pays lip service to climate change and probably has enough smarts to complete one side of a Rubik's Cube. Treasury pick Mnuchin would struggle to make a list of the 30 most loathsome Goldman Sachs veterans. These and a few others were merely worst-case-scenario corporate-influence types, industry foxes sent to man regulatory henhouses. But the rest were the most fantastic collection of creeps since the "Thriller" video. Many were blunderers and conspiracists whose sole qualification for office appeared to be their open hostility to the missions of the agencies they were tapped to run. Trump's choice for EPA director, Pruitt, was a climate-change denier who infamously zeroed out the environmental-enforcement division from the Oklahoma attorney general's office. For secretary of labor, Trump picked a fast-food titan who prefers robots to human workers (robots, he said, don't file discrimination suits!). Trump put a brain surgeon in charge of federal housing, picked a hockey-team owner to be secretary of the Army, and chose as budget director a congressman best known for inspiring a downgrade to America's credit rating by threatening to default on the national debt. Trump's pick for energy secretary, Perry, reportedly not only admitted that he didn't know what the Department of Energy actually does, but had called for that very agency's elimination as a presidential candidate (and forgot that fact during a debate). Moreover, Trump had brutalized Perry during the campaign as a dimwit among dimwits, whose "smart glasses" affectation didn't fool anyone. For Trump and his inner circle to name Perry to any Cabinet post at all felt like trolling, like a football team wrapping the mascot in packing tape and mailing him to Canada. But to send someone you're on record calling an idiot to run the nation's nuclear arsenal, that doesn't fit easily in any bucket: mischief, evil, incompetence – it's even a little extreme for nihilism. Trump's lead adviser, the fast-talking Breitbart Svengali Bannon, would ultimately explain the thinking behind Trump's appointments in front of the CPAC audience. "If you look at these Cabinet appointees, they were selected for a reason," he said. The mysterious figure described that reason as the "deconstruction of the administrative state." Another early nominee who skated through was CIA chief Pompeo, a Jesus-humping conspiracist who embraces torture and once called politics "a never-ending struggle...until the Rapture." A spy chief who believes in literal Armageddon apparently wasn't "scathing" enough to be "fevered" about, and 14 Democrats supported his nomination in a whopping 66-32 confirmation. Trump's choice was to run the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Carson. Even if Carson were not an addled mystic who thinks gay rights are a Marxist plot and "hummus" a Palestinian terrorist group, putting a doctor with no economics background in charge of an agency about to take part in one of the most complex financial projects in our history – the reorganization of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – seemed like madness. Carson, through an aide, said as late as November he didn't want to take a Cabinet post because he "has no government experience," saying he didn't want to do anything that could "cripple the presidency."  Mark it down as another first in the Trump era: Politician formally announces his own incompetence in an attempt to prevent his own nomination, gets nominated anyway, and is even supported by members of an opposition party. The Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committee's first visitor from Planet Trump is a mute, unassuming woman with straight blond hair, glasses and a quizzical expression, perched at attention like someone awaiting a sermon. The nomination of DeVos to be education secretary was surely meant on some level as an insult to the Senate. The daughter of an auto-parts billionaire, DeVos is also married to the heir of the Amway fortune, which makes her something like America's reigning Queen of Suckers. Her family has given as much as $200 million to conservative causes and politicians over the years. DeVos arrives dressed in a blazer of bright purple. (Historians will note this is the same color of the robes worn by Incitatus, the horse Caligula used to troll the Senate.) Over the next three and a half hours, she will prove to be the worst witness since Bryan sent himself to the stand in the Scopes Monkey Trial. As the hearing progresses, DeVos tires and her Sunday-school smile wilts around the edges. By the time Sen. Murphy of Connecticut asks if guns should be allowed in schools, she's fed up. "I think probably there, I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the school to protect from potential grizzlies," she says. The "grizzlies" line, to use an overwrought cliché, broke the Internet. A video from the hearing would garner 1.2 million hits on YouTube, beyond anything in the committee's history. The DeVos debacle impacted Trump's choice for labor secretary, Puzder. Puzder's ex-wife had appeared in disguise on The Winfrey Show back in the Nineties to talk about being abused. Moreover, Puzder greenlit a line of pseudo-pornographic commercials, including one that featured babes in postage-stamp bikinis opening wide to wolf down "three-way burgers." Even his name, Puzder, sounds like an unmentionable sex act. Mulvaney, the South Carolina congressman with the cropped hair and the bulldog face is one of the most disliked people on the Hill. He orates with the charm of a prison guard and behaves as if smiling on Capitol grounds would violate the Framers' vision of limited government. He fits the Bannonite vision of revolutionary destruction, having for years led a gang of fiscal conspiracy theorists who, based on nothing whatsoever, believe that nothing bad could come from the United States defaulting on its national debt. At the time, Trump's national security adviser and noted Pizzagate conspiracy theorist Gen. Flynn had just resigned, after revelations that he had unreported contact with the Russian ambassador prior to Trump's inauguration. Within a few weeks, Attorney General Sessions will be rolled up in a similar imbroglio. Bannon, who is fast achieving mythical status as the empire's supreme villain, on the surface, is just another vicious ex-hippie of the Horowitz/ Savage school, a former Grateful Dead fan who overswung the other way to embrace a Nazistic "culture first" alt-right movement. Everyone from Time magazine (which called him "the great manipulator") to The New York Times (which called him a "de facto president") is rushing to make him into a superempowered henchman of the extreme right, a new R Cohn – fitting, since Cohn himself was one of Trump's first mentors. But whether he's Cohn or just a fourth-rate imitator with a fat neck is still unclear. Trump in the White House may just be a monkey clutching history's biggest hand grenade. He is already making idiots and accomplices of us all, bringing out the worst in each of us, making us dumber just by watching. Even if Trump never learns to govern, after four years of this we will forget what civilization ever looked like – and it will be programming, not policy, that will have changed the world. 3rd April 2017  Pro-isis group United Cyber Caliphate (UCC) hacking group has released a video message and draws up ‘kill list’ of targets –  of 8,786 people, including well known politicians, celebrities, religious leaders and muslims who have spoken out against the terror group - names, addresses and emails of people in US and UK – and threatens Trump. Worryingly the message pledges to release the home addresses of those it wants wiped off the the face of the Earth. Former FBI agent-turned lawyer Kaplan warned earlier this year that ‘kill lists’ intend to inspire lone gunmen into carrying out attacks. The shocking new terror video was tracked down by the SITE Intelligence Group, a world leading non-governmental counter-terrorism organisation. The organisation has tracked and analysed global terrorism and jihadi networks for nearly two decades, and is well-recognised as one of the most knowledgeable and reliable experts in the field. Globalization
10 April 2017  China 'deploys 150,000 troops to deal with possible North Korean refugees over fears Trump may strike Kim following missile attack on Syria'. Trump's Syria strike was widely interpreted as a warning to North Korea. China was left shocked by the air strikes. It has deployed medical and backup units from the People's Liberation Army forces to the Yalu River. The troops have been dispatched to prepare for pre-emptive attacks by the US. The US Navy strike group Carl Vinson cancelled a planned trip to Australia this weekend, heading toward the Korean peninsula instead, in a move that will raise tensions in the region. The US Navy has moved the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group from Singapore to North Korea after the country conducted more missile testing. China's top nuclear envoy arrived in Seoul for talks on the North Korean threat, as the United States sent the naval strike group to the region and signalled it may act to shut down Pyongyang's weapons program. Seoul and Washington are also conducting joint military drills, an annual exercise which is seen by the North as a practice for war. US intelligence officials are warning that Pyongyang could be less than two years away from its goal of striking the continental United States. If it's a preventive strike or precision strike, there's danger that this could expand into a broader regional conflict involving China or Japan. (Source: DailyMail)

8 April 2017  The Kremlin has warned the US it is ‘one step from war' over Syria - but the Trump administration hit back by saying it would be prepared to carry out airstrikes again. Russian Prime Minister Medvedev denounced the US for attacking ‘the legitimate government of Syria’ and for allegedly breaking international law without the approval of the UN. The furious Russian president responded to the attack against his ally by diverting warship the Admiral Grigorovich to protect the Syrian coast and vowing to bolster Assad’s missile defences against further bombing raids. Putin ordered his Admiral Grigorovich frigate - armed with cruise missiles and a self-defense system - from the Black Sea to dock in-between the Syrian mainland and the US ships that launched the attack. The missiles were launched from US destroyers 150 miles away in the Mediterranean Sea. He also suspended a military hotline known as the ‘deconfliction line’ which is designed to avoid mid-air collisions and confrontations between Russian and US fighter jets over the war-torn country. The two old Cold War superpowers clashed at the UN Security Council where a Russian envoy claimed US ‘aggression’ had strengthened terrorism. But Mrs Haley said the Russian government held ‘considerable responsibility’ for Assad’s use of chemical weapons. The action marked a dramatic U-turn from the new US administration. In the final days of last year’s election campaign, Mr Trump warned a ‘shooting war in Syria’ could bring the US into a conflict with Russia that could ‘very well lead to World War III’. The editor of the website AltRight.com, Spencer, told of how he felt ‘shocked and angry’ at yesterday’s intervention.  All eyes will be on Tillerson next week when he becomes the first Trump Cabinet member to visit Russia. Tillerson may get an audience with Putin himself. EU President Tusk said in a tweet that 'US strikes show needed resolve against barbaric chemical attacks. EU will work with the US to end brutality in Syria.' /map; photos; timeline of the Syria civil war/ (Source: DailyMail): http://tinyurl.com/mhp2b2x
