25 August 2013     Moscow warns against Iraq-style 'adventure' in Syria
'We strongly urge those who, by attempting to impose their own results on the United Nation (UN) experts, are raising the possibility of a military operation in Syria to use their common sense and refrain from committing a tragic mistake' - foreign ministry spokesman Lukashevich said in a statement. 'All this is reminiscent of events from a decade ago, when the United States bypassed the UN and used fallacious information on the presence in Iraq of weapons of mass destruction to launch an adventure, the consequences of which are known to all' - he said. The United States and Britain in 2003 led a military invasion of Iraq that toppled long-time dictator Hussein. A UN mission had failed to find any of the weapons of mass destructions Saddam was suspected of possessing but the Iraq-i strongman was known to have repeatedly used chemical weapons. The UN said its inspectors in Syria could begin work as early as August 26, after Damascus agreed to the probe today during a visit by top UN official Kane. Washington, which has said that evidence President Assad's regime used chemical weapons would cross a red line and warrant tougher action, said the Syrian offer was 'too late to be credible'. Russia - which together with Iran and China has supported Assad throughout the twenty-nine-month-old Syrian crisis - urged the rebel camp to guarantee the safety of the UN team lead by professor Sellstroem. 18 August, 2013     Egypt plays a vital role in international energy markets through the operation of the Suez Canal and the Suez-Mediterranean (Sumed) pipeline. These are vital pieces of infrastructure in the global oil market. Last year, about 7pc of all seaborne traded oil and 13pc of liquefied natural gas ('LNG') travelled through the Suez Canal, according to data collected by the US Energy Information Administration ('EIA'). The Suez Canal, an on e hundred-one-mile link between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean, and the two hundred-mile Sumed pipeline are strategic routes for Persian Gulf oil and gas shipments to Europe and North America. Closure of these two routes would add an estimated two thousand seven hundred miles of transit from Saudi Arabia to the United States around the Cape of Good Hope, increasing costs and shipping time. Hopes are high, however, that both the canal and pipeline will continue to operate as normal. Maritime insurers appear to be relaxed about the situation at the moment, but one, 'Skuld', has warned ships’ crews not to go ashore. The Egyptian uncertainty will continue to boost the oil price, but the situation in neighbouring Libya is also a concern. Workers at ports in Libya have been on strike for a number of weeks, with the protests resulting in a drop in Libya’s oil exports. (Source: 'The Telegraph': http://tinyurl.com/ldschyc.     26 August 2013     Britain is planning to join forces with America and launch military action against Syria within days in response to the gas attack believed to have been carried out by President Assad’s forces against his own people. Any military action that was agreed could begin within the next week. The Foreign Secretary said all the evidence 'points in one direction', to the use of illegal chemical agents by Assad regime forces. Officials said the Assad regime has continued bombarding the area in the days since the attack, making it likely that any evidence which could establish who was responsible will have been destroyed. Labour said Parliament must be recalled if Mr Cameron was considering a military response, but Downing Street sources said this may not be necessary as the Prime Minister retained the right to act urgently if required.  Any retaliatory attack would be likely to be launched from the sea as the Syrian air force is judged to be strong enough to shoot down enemy jets. A Royal Navy nuclear-powered submarine is said to be in the region while a number of warships recently left Britain for exercises in the Mediterranean. Commanders may also need to make use of the 'RAF' base at Akrotiri, Cyprus for air support. The Royal Navy declined to comment on the current positions of its submarines, but they regularly pass through the area on their way to the Suez Canal. The Royal Navy also has its rapid response task force in the Mediterranean. The group includes two frigates and the helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious. The Libya campaign began with a blitz of Tomahawk cruise missiles from US warships and from a British 'Trafalgar Class' submarine. (Source: "The Telegrpah"): http://tinyurl.com/n4z2e92.     27 August 2013     Does Obama know he’s fighting on al-Qa’ida’s side? If Obama decides to attack the Syrian regime, he has ensured – for the very first time in history – that the United States will be on the same side as 'al-Qa’ida'. Quite an alliance! Was it not the Three Musketeers who shouted “All for one and one for all” each time they sought combat? This really should be the new battle cry if – or when – the statesmen of the Western world go to war against Assad. The men who destroyed so many thousands on 9/11 will then be fighting alongside the very nation whose innocents they so cruelly murdered almost exactly twelve years ago. Quite an achievement for Obama, Cameron, Hollande and the rest of the miniature warlords. This, of course, will not be trumpeted by the Pentagon or the White House – nor, I suppose, by 'al-Qa’ida' – though they are both trying to destroy Bashar. So are the 'Nusra front', one of 'al-Qa’ida’s affiliates. But it does raise some interesting possibilities. Maybe the Americans should ask 'al-Qa’ida' for intelligence help – after all, this is the group with 'boots on the ground', something the Americans have no interest in doing. And maybe 'al-Qa’ida' could offer some target information facilities to the country which usually claims that the supporters of 'al-Qa’ida, rather than the Syrians, are the most wanted men in the world. There will be some ironies, of course. While the Americans drone 'al-Qa’ida' to death in Yemen and Pakistan – along, of course, with the usual flock of civilians – they will be giving them, with the help of Messrs Cameron, Hollande and the other Little General-politicians, material assistance in Syria by hitting 'al-Qa’ida’s enemies. Indeed, you can bet your bottom dollar that the one target the Americans will not strike in Syria will be 'al-Qa’ida or the 'Nusra front'. And our own Prime Minister will applaud whatever the Americans do, thus allying himself with 'al-Qa’ida', whose London bombings may have slipped his mind. Now it’s war by YouTube. This doesn’t mean that the terrible images of the gassed and dying Syrian civilians are false. It does mean that any evidence to the contrary is going to have to be suppressed. For example, no-one is going to be interested in persistent reports in Beirut that three Hezbollah members – fighting alongside government troops in Damascus – were apparently struck down by the same gas on the same day, supposedly in tunnels. It happened in Lebanon when the US Air Force decided to bomb Syrian missiles in the Bekaa Valley on 4 December 1983. An American 'A-6' fighter bomber was hit by a Syrian 'Strela' missile – Russian made, naturally – and crash-landed in the Bekaa; its pilot, Lange, was killed, its co-pilot, Goodman, taken prisoner and freighted off to jail in Damascus. Jackson had to travel to Syria to get him back after almost a month amid many clichés about 'ending the cycle of violence'. Another American plane – this time an 'A-7' – was also hit by Syrian fire but the pilot managed to eject over the Mediterranean where he was plucked from the water by a Lebanese fishing boat. Sure, we are told that it will be a short strike on Syria, in and out, a couple of days. That’s what Obama likes to think. But think Iran. Think Hezbollah. This one will run and run. (Source: 'The Independent'): http://tinyurl.com/looys6w    29 August 2013     Cameron backed down and agreed to delay a military attack on Syria following a growing revolt over the UK's rushed response to the crisis  (Source: 'The Telegraph'): http://tinyurl.com/nn6swpv.     30 August 2013      Obama's Syria plans in disarray after the British Parliament unexpectedly rejected a motion designed to pave the way to authorising the UK's participation in military action. Although Britain's support was not a prerequisite for US action, the Obama administration was left exposed without the backing of its most loyal ally, which has taken part in every major US military offensive in recent years. In recent days, Obama has spoken personally with leaders of France, Australia, Canada and Germany. But none were as important as Britain, a traditional ally during US military actions which has been lobbying behind the scenes for months for a tougher action on Syria. (Source: 'The Guardian'): http://tinyurl.com/njetkjc.     August 29, 2013     U.K. Parliament Rejects Syria Action. Members of all major parties—including Mr. Cameron's Tories—opposed the measure. Mr. Cameron failed to present incontrovertible evidence linking the Assad regime to the attacks in Syria last week. Mr. Cameron didn't provide details of intelligence to support his conclusions, but highlighted 'open source' evidence such as extensive video footage and the fact that the Assad regime was capable of such an attack and the opposition wasn't. U.S. officials said Mr. Obama is prepared to act in coming days without Britain. They added that unlike U.S. involvement in the 2011 military operations in Libya, the options being considered in Syria are on a smaller scale and wouldn't require a coalition to be effective. 2013. VIII. 25.     A német védelmi miniszter ellenzi a külföldi beavatkozást Szíriában
Annak idején Németország szociáldemokrata kormánya váltig ellenezte a Nyugat beavatkozását Huszein irak-i rezsimjének megdöntésére. Németország - a Franciaországgal együtt - nem is vett részt a 2003 márciusában indított intervencióban. (Forrás: MTI)

Russia    Oroszország

26 August, 2013    Russia has long opposed military intervention in Syria on the grounds that it would violate Syria's sovereignty.      It would take a “complete humanitarian catastrophe” for the Kremlin to support intervention, Markov, a pro-Kremlin analyst and deputy head of the 'Plekhanov Economic University' said, but for now there is still hope that Assad can win and bring order to the country. 'Russia is not interested in Assad himself, it's interested in the norms of international war' - Markov said. 'We don't think it's right to enter a civil war against a sitting president. We don't like that logic.'     Quotes from Russian foreign minister Lavrov's press conference, courtesy of AP and Reuters: 'They cannot produce evidence, but keep on saying that the 'red line' has been crossed and they cannot wait any longer... The use of force without the approval of the United Nations ('UN') Security Council is a very grave violation of international law... If anybody thinks that bombing and destroying the Syrian military infrastructure, and leaving the battlefield for the opponents of the regime to win, would end everything - that is an illusion. Összesen negyvennégy darab 'Sz-200'-as rakétaindító állás és száznegyvennyolc darab 'SZ-125'-ös légvédelmi komplexum található Szíriá-ban. Putyin, orosz elnök 2013. június 3-án kijelentette, hogy Moszkva még nem teljesítette a damaszkusz-i vezetéssel kötött szerződést, amelyik alapján 'Sz-300'-as légvédelmi rendszereket szállítanának Szíriáb-a. 'A large anti-submarine ship of the 'Northern Fleet' will join the existing naval forces over the next few days. Later it will be joined by the 'Moskva', a rocket cruiser of the 'Black Sea Fleet' which is now wrapping up its tasks in the northern Atlantic and will soon begin a Transatlantic voyage towards the Strait of Gibraltar. After U.S. ambassador McFaul had finished a meeting with deputy foreign minister Ryabkov, the ministry declared: 'Russia has expressed its conviction that any forceful action against Syria that the U.S. could carry out in circumvention of the United Nations Security Council would be an act of aggression and a gross violation of international law.' Közös nyilatkozatban támogatásukról biztosították az egyiptom-i iszlamistákat - közölte egy mauritánia-i online híroldal. At least sixty people, including police officers, were reportedly killed after parts of the country descended into violence. In a counter move, the 'National Salvation Front' - a loose liberal and leftist coalition - called on Egyptians to take to the streets against what it said was 'obvious terrorism actions' conducted by the 'Brotherhood'. Tear gas could be seen during flashpoints in parts of the city, with protesters apparently hurling bottles and rocks at security forces. Signalling his displeasure at the worst bloodshed in Egypt for generations, US President Obama said normal co-operation between Washington and Cairo could not continue and announced the cancellation of military exercises with Egypt next month. 'We deplore violence against civilians. We support universal rights essential to human dignity, including the right to peaceful protest' - he said. His remarks sparked a defiant response from the Egyptian presidency which said that 'statements not based on facts may encourage violent armed groups'. VIII. 17.     Az Egyiptom különböző városaiban lezajlott augusztus 16-i, pénteki összecsapásoknak összesen százhetvenhárom halálos áldozatuk van - jelentette be a kormány szóvivője. A Murszi hívei és a rendfenntartó erők összetűzései során ezerháromszázharminc ember szenvedett sérülést.     A 'Muzulmán Testvériség' betiltását javasolja az egyiptom-i miniszterelnök.

August 29, 2013     Iran: 'Thousands of missiles' to rain on Israel
Iran is threatening to launch a massive missile strike against Israel if the United States attacks Syria for using chemical weapons against its own people, which could touch off a full-blown war in the region. Izrael

2013. VIII. 25.
Helyi értékelések szerint a 'Hezbollah' csakis kifejezett irán-i utasításra lépne akcióba. A 'síita' milícia mintegy hetvenezer rakétával rendelkezik. A 'Jediót Ahronót' szerint Izrael válaszának nyitányát a 'Hezbollah' közép- és dél-libanon-i stratégiai készleteire mért csapás képezné. A légierő a szíria-i tömegpusztító fegyvereket tartalmazó raktárakat is megtámadná - a 'The Times' izraeli forrásokra hivatkozó két hónappal ezelőtti jelentése szerint tizennyolc ilyen célpontot tartanak nyilván a vezérkarban (ahol vita folyik arról, hogy adott esetben elsősorban a civilek lakta falvakat és városokat kell-e védeni, vagy pedig az ország katonai és stratégiai létesítményeit) – írta a 'Jediót Ahronót'. A tanácskozást már két hónappal ezelőtt elkezdték szervezni. Az Egyesült Államok 'F-16'-os repülőgépeket és 'Patriot' rakétákat állomásoztat a külföldre menekült szíriai-ak mintegy egynegyedét befogadó Jordániá-ban. United States    Egyesült Államok

August 14, 2013     The crackdown could usher in the most violent radicalization of the Arab world since the Palestinian uprisings. The loss of moderate Islamist alternatives, and the failure of democracy, could supply 'al-Qaida' with its biggest recruiting campaign since 9/11.Egypt may only be the current epicenter of the radicalization phenomenon. In Iraq and Syria, a newly renamed 'al-Qaida' umbrella group calling itself the 'Islamic State of Iraq' and the 'Levant' is dramatically expanding its presence in both countries, 'The Washington Post' reported on August 13. In Tunisia, where the 'Arab Spring' began, the secular opposition and the ruling Islamist 'Ennahda' party have grown more and more polarized, and two leading secular politicians have been assassinated. The secularists, apparently inspired by the ouster of Morsi in Egypt, have held daily mass protests in an effort to dissolve the national assembly. There is a reason the international community has set a clear standard and why many countries have taken major steps to eradicate these weapons. There is a reason why President Obama has made it such a priority to stop the proliferation of these weapons and lock them down where they do exist' - Kerry said. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dempsey and Gen. Austin III, the head of U.S. Central Command, are in Jordan with their counterparts from several allied nations, including Britain and France, for long-planned talks aimed at strengthening regional security. The talks, however, are now focusing on the worsening situation in Syria. (Source: 'Defence One')     August 26, 2013    After Syria chemical allegations, Obama considering limited military strike. The timing of such an attack, which would probably last no more than two days and involve sea-launched cruise missiles — or, possibly, long-range bombers — striking military targets not directly related to Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, would be dependent on three factors: completion of an intelligence report assessing Syria-n government culpability in last week’s alleged chemical attack; ongoing consultation with allies and Congress; and determination of a justification under international law. An attack occurred, Kerry said. The U.S. intelligence report is to be released this week. Among the factors, officials said, are that only the government is known to possess chemical weapons and the rockets to deliver them, and its continuing control of chemical stocks has been closely monitored by U.S. intelligence. The 'Reuters'/'Ipsos' poll was taken Aug.19-23, the very same week that horrific reports emerged strongly suggesting that Syrian leader Assad has used chemical weapons against his own people, potentially killing hundreds or even thousands of civilians. He also warned that intervening in Syria would entangle the United States in another war in the Middle East and encourage Islamists who are fighting the forces of Syrian president Assad. 'So what, we’re about to become 'al-Qaeda’s air force now?” - Kucinich sarcastically asked. (Source: 'National Rewiev'): http://tinyurl.com/q69f7va    The U.S. is moving toward possible military strikes against Syria without the public support of any major Arab ally, reflecting broad unease in the region about another Western military intervention. 'Arab League' delegates urged the United Nations ('UN') Security Council, rather than the West, to take 'deterrent' action against Syria to prevent a repeat of alleged chemical attacks on Aug. 21 in the suburbs of Damascus. In Cairo, Egypt foreign minister Fahmy appeared to side against intervention, saying: 'The solution for Syria must be diplomatic, not militaristic'. While senior Saudi officials have been urging the U.S. and others behind the scenes to support tougher action in Syria, Arab leaders for more than a year have publicly maintained that any international military action there should be sanctioned by the UN Security Council, where Russia and China have blocked action. Turkey, in a newspaper interview by foreign minister Davutoglu published on August 26, became the first major Muslim Middle East ally of the U.S. to announce it would join an international military coalition against Syria, even without advance UN approval. In Jordan, where a U.S.- and Saudi-backed effort is helping train Syrian rebels, Jordanian King Abdullah publicly called for peaceful settlement. Jordanian officials have repeated that line over the past week. Jordan already has taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria. Its fear is being 'dragged into retaliation and war', a senior Jordanian official said. Saudi Arabia—for more than a year the strongest advocate of international action on Syria—has limited its public response to last week's alleged chemical attack to statements by foreign minister Faisal calling for unspecified, decisive action under the UN. Many Arabs describe themselves as divided—wishing for action that would stop the killing in Syria, but not trusting the U.S. to do it right.
